I'd argue 4 is better than 6.

5 too. The job system makes it better than 6.

6 just seems "dark" for me in every way including the graphics. I like bright colorful graphics.

FF5 is the only one before 6 that I like at all

FFV is amazing, and everyone should play it. It's hugely influential for the series in the long run, because of the groundwork it laid for the job system.

FFIV is also excellent. The criticism of FFIV's story is completely overblown. From what I can tell, it's mostly people complaining about death fake outs. Death fake outs are cool and fit the game's melodramatic tone. It rules. Not a fan of the DS remake.

FFIII (DS) is garbage. Perhaps the most disappointing game I've ever played.

FFII is just okay. The Dawn of Souls port fixes the levelling system somewhat, which was completely busted in the original. The story is whatever.

FFI is also just okay. Everyone should play it to recognize its historical impact and that's all.

Interesting, so it seems the general consensus is that 4 and 5 are worth playing on their own merits, 1 is worth it for the legacy, and 2 and 3 are not very good. I've played a bit of 1 and 2 but none of the others.

5 used to be so forgotten before its gba port. Ya anthology was a meh port, but the game was still playable and great.

3 was ruined by the DS remake. The pixel remaster will be significantly better and worth playing if you are interested in 8 bit rpgs, but its still a clear step below 4 and 5.

Hot take, I know. But I've never really liked 4. I've given it so many chances, tried out a bunch of different versions of it (I think I've played it like five or six times) hoping that eventually it would hook me and I'd see what everyone else likes about it, but I just never cared for it. It straddles that border between the old school Final Fantasy games where the plot still wasn't good, but it was modern enough to put the plot over the gameplay, which makes for an awful mix. I really dislike how often the characters switch in and out of your party so often, and the limited customization. So there's nothing there that compels me.

I enjoy 1 as a simple dungeon crawling RPG experience. It's not fancy, but it keeps my interest with its simple, solid gameplay.

I like 2 more than most people. It has a ton of flaws, but at least the Dawn of Souls version makes it so the stat leveling up system can actually somewhat work, and once that works I can actually have fun customizing my characters.

I haven't played 3 too often, but it just feels like a worse version of 5 in every possible way. Even the remake didn't fix this problem, and in some ways was worse than the original.

FF1 does not actually have much historical impact imo. It was important for Square at the time as a revenue source when finances were shaky but not important at all for consumers or the industry. The most influential, best-selling, and highest quality games in its series owe very little to it. Most of what it's got going for it there is just being the first game to have "Final Fantasy" in its title. It's closer to being a Street Fighter 1 than a Mario 1 or Zelda 1.

The problem, imo, is that you ought to be comparing it to 1 rather than 5.

5 and 4 are both great! Though I only played 4 DS, don't know how the pixel one is. 5's lack of widespread popularity is likely just because not very many people have played it, not because of its quality. It's a really good game and the job system is surprisingly well designed for how old it is. The plot isn't the focus in the same way it is for 4 or 6, but the game benefits from not taking itself too seriously. And the gameplay has barely dated at all!

I feel like 4 should go higher in being a more "brilliant" game but the lack of meaningful customization makes it tougher to revisit. It's more fun than the NES games but too shallow.

Final Fantasy 5 is my favorite FF, one of my favorite games of all time, and the only one out of this group that I even like at all!

Was never really able to get into FF4. FF3 is sort of cute but it's just inferior to FF5 in every way. FF2 is uh... not good, except for the novelty of it being one of the earliest jrpgs with a very jrpg-like story. FF1 is only good if you already like it, I think.
