See topic title.

https://theverge.com/2021/10/6/22712250/twitch-hack-leak-data-streamer-revenue-steam-competitor

The leaked data has been verified as legitimate by both VGC and Verge. Twitch was massively compromised: source code, streamer revenue, an apparent unreleased Steam competitor from Amazon, and more.

Probably a good idea for anyone here who has a Twitch account to change passwords and enable 2FA if you weren't already.

Yeah thanks for the heads up xp. Not like I have any important info on my Twitch account but no harm in being safe!

Man is there any big company that hasn't had something like this happen yet >_>

Well, I suspect the story will end up being the payouts to streamers/how much top streamers are getting but given the scale of the hack just thought I should give a heads-up to anyone who might be affected. Like presumably the passwords won't just be sitting there in plaintext and would still be encrypted but better safe than sorry.

Those revenue amounts are a little lower then I thought? I guess it's only what twitch paid out directly and not what they make from sponsorships and donations and stuff so maybe that makes more sense

Yeah, I looked up a few full time streamers I knew that are fairly popular, and considering they are independent contractors the wages are pretty meh

I would probably double those values to account for donations and sponsorships, and don't forget Youtube revenue as well. I know some of the big streamers who took the gambling sponsorships were making a million dollars a month on them. That's on the extreme end, but the money is there for sure.

So that's the amount they've made total, all-time? Or is that like yearly?

Either way, way to go H-Box. Over 700k for a Melee player is great!

Im guessing these are all time? The rankings to me are more interesting than the amounts though.

I think they are still pretty high though. Most big streamers make way way more in just donations

so if Juan has made 700k from Twitch, would it be fair to say he's easily over a mil with the addition of his YouTube channel?

I'm sure some streamers are going to break this down now that it's public. I'd be curious to know if this includes everything or excludes bits, subs, etc.

I was under the impression this was bits and sub money from Twitch over a 2 year period. Twitch wouldn't hold numbers from sponsors or donations as that's nothing to do with them.

Yeah if you're lucky enough to 'make it' on Twitch you can earn a fortune for what is effectively a zero qualification job.

I wouldn't call twitch streaming a zero qual job. To make a decent living you need to be a good entertainer and/or one of the best in the world at the game you play.

The issue one always faces is: you are not making money FROM Twitch, as in the company. You earn money being a viable entertainer so that viewers actually watch and support your content. But that is a month to month thing. Churn is a weird experience. Some people could be fans for life or flake out after one or two streams.

The unpredictability of it all makes it....unappealing to make a career out of it. Same deal with YouTube or Patreon. Twitch has lower entry barriers to monetization, but that doesn't guarantee anything

Yeah, the problem with twitch specifically is your popularity is almost assuredly tied to the popularity of the game you are playing and the vast majority of twitch streamers are game specific.

So if your game wanes you are in huge trouble

That or you play the stuff I do (rhythm games/RPGs for YouTube), you're practically invisible to anyone mainstream .

*Trying not to sound sour or pissy*. I gave up the "I'm gonna make money or even grow an audience" and took a pragmatic view for my own sanity.

I do think it's next to impossible to make any sort of career out of it now though. I mean it was hard enough a few years ago but now it just seems like the top earners are getting richer and those at the bottom are just left fighting for scraps or quitting altogether.

I think it's at least as doable as making a living playing professional sports. I don't think anyone should expect to make a living doing that either, but the best of the best are able to.

Stats wise, I find this always striking to me when I study it. In the past month, I am "technically" in the top 3rd or so of streamers' channels in terms of average and total views.

My average viewers: 1-2

I mean...that speaks volumes. I sure as fuck don't feel that high up...imagine how many stream to 0.

I think it's less rich get richer, and more you have to get into new games before they get hot, or get into only super hot games.

Nobody is going to watch a random streamer for an unpopular old game

he was banned in june of 2019, this list says the data tracks "from August 2019 until October 2021"

it's possible it's him, maybe? either twitch uses extremely lagging payment periods, or he was making twenty times as much as everybody else

maybe <unknown>/null is the value for any account that's currently closed or something. really not sure

+ backup, Miko uses Twitch a little more heavily and appears to have amassed 117k.
Both make significantly more off of Youtube superchats/memberships though.

No idea how much they even make from ad revenue and merch sale, but their merch always seems to sell out.
