I talked to some people about this. My first thoughts were Mario coins and Zelda rupees, but after that I'm not sure. Thought this would be the place to ask!

Are Sonic rings actually currency though

He doesn't typically buy things with them. Granted neither does Mario with coins, but coins as an object are broadly recognizable as currency, whether you use them as such or not. Rings though? I don't know.

Zenny, gil, and GP or G are some of the most recognizable named currencies.

EDIT: This could also include actual in-game currencies like the sort of gems, gold, or whatnot that you buy in predatory F2P games to unlock stuff. Not sure what's the most recognizable there, I try to stay away from such games as much as possible.

Gold and gil were my first reaction. Gems are often a secondary currency, too. Plus real world money like dollars or the all-generic "credits."

I had to look up what zenny was. Only game I've ever played that used it was MH:W, and I didn't play that for long.

Other currencies I thought of: Meseta, munny, caps, rupees, meat, platinum, and oddly, kim. Who the hell is going to name the currency to Sword of Vermilion?

That was actually the 3rd thing that came to my mind behind Mario coins and Zelda rupees, and I don't even play Fortnite!

Oh so it's just Mega Man and Monster Hunter then a few obscure/old games really. And one single Street Fighter for some reason. That makes sense. I'd hardly call it universal for them if it's not in RE/DMC/Okami/AA etc!

All Battle Network games also use it as a currency.

There is a very loose connection between the tail end of those games and Star Force, if I recall right.

Rings are currency in the racing games, the rpg, and are bet/won in casino portions of multiple games, so theyre a currency.

EDIT: I want to say theyre currency in some of the normal platformers, too. 06 and Advance or Rush, I think?
