Mostly because this hasn't been an issue before Covid. Before, the only instances where you'd need to produce proof of vaccination would be for certain jobs or schooling (and similar things), in which case you show it once and it gets added to your file. The notion of needing to carry it everywhere and present it to get into regular businesses is very much a new thing, and the existing system of doing things hasn't had a chance to catch up to that yet (especially where nobody planned for this because it was hoped that it wouldn't be necessary).

The pandemic planning started back in the Bush [W] administration, unfortunately it was thrown out the window by the previous administration because Obama strengthened the pandemic plan he was left with to the point that all the previous administration had to do was say "Go."

But since Obama was involved in any way shape or form, the 45th POTUS revoked the security clearances of the individuals who should have been running things, while promoting a drug that had no (and often negative) effect on treating covid patients, that 45 was also profiting off of.

Biden has been playing catchup since day one.

None of this has anything to do with the simple printing of a vaccination card though lol. People get so wrapped up in party politics. This is something that could be changed at any time. Biden could literally wake up tomorrow and decide the vaccine cards should be wallet size and so it would be. I don't get it. There is no reason they should still be inconveniently sized almost 7 months into his presidency if it has been found to be an issue for people

I actually had to get another vaccine card for my 2nd dose because I forgot it at home due to it not really fitting ideally into my wallet. The lady told me they aren't supposed to give you another one because people are selling them but she said it was fine anyway. It was silly though because they had a giant stack of them in the cvs waiting room where I was alone with no cameras. I could've taken like 100 of them and they wouldn't have probably noticed

As adjl already pointed out in another topic, Florida's vax rate is comparable to the rest of the nation and it's had shutdowns like the rest of the nation.

Propaganda is fun, isn't it? Although it's easier to hide propaganda when you can bring yourself to say a president's name instead of referring to him as a variant of "45"

At least until one or more local public health authorities decided they wouldn't accept or issue the smaller cards for whatever reason. It seems simple, but it's something that does require coordination and consensus between multiple levels of government. That's not something that has come easily at any point in this pandemic, especially when it comes to anything related to mandating vaccines.

Why not? I certainly did. I've been predicting pretty much every step along the way of this thing since last February. Including most of the fuck-ups.

But it's worth remembering that being able to accurately predict something or suggest something isn't the same as being able to implement something. Saying "We're going to need some sort of universal ID system to show who's been vaccinated and who hasn't, we should probably have some sort of easy-to-carry card that is about the same size as a driver's license/credit card" is easy. Actually developing the system for such a thing and coordinating with every single vaccination point to distribute it, and establishing means to check for valid cards versus fakes, is much, much harder.

Regardless of whether you want to use it as an excuse to shit on either Trump or Biden, both administrations have completely dropped the ball on providing anything resembling coherent leadership or legislation. But it's also somewhat understandable, because people have been predicting a global pandemic was pretty much inevitable for years, and suggesting we needed systems in place to deal with it, and we never bothered establishing even the most basic of plans. So now we're like the metaphorical kid trying to finish his term paper an hour before the class where it's due.

When you're in the middle of a crisis where no one is really taking charge and hundreds of people, groups, local governments, or private businesses are being forced to invent policy on the fly with no real guidance, there's going to be a LOT of counter-intuitive shit going on.

Bonus points where many of those groups and governments are actively working against sensible responses to the situation because the whole response to the pandemic has been framed as an assault on freedom.

That would be a very slow system, and the vaccine providers already supply packaging, it would essentially be another pamphlet included in the existing production run.

Ultimately, the problem with making any decently secure system lies on the business end of things. A paper record is pretty much useless in that regard. Anyone can print out and sign a vaccination record themselves, and the restaurants or whatever that check them won't know the difference (since they won't be taking the time to contact the doctor that allegedly signed it). Even "scan a QR code and check it against a photo ID" is a lot more infrastructure than most businesses can be expected to develop for a relatively short-term need (though hypothetically, anyone with a phone could pull that off with an app, so that's probably the most reasonable approach).

Really, what's needed is a countrywide database of immunization statuses, an app for letting people access their data, and another app (or at least a function within the first app) to allow businesses to validate that data before letting people in. But that requires a cohesive plan from the government (which changed hands at the most critical time for developing such a thing), plus IT and government are never a good combination.
