AAI1-2: Turnabout Airlines

Love the Logic theme here. Could listen to that for a while.

We examine the admittedly hideous suitcases designed by Ms Teneiro. One is stopped by blocks to prevent it from moving and the other...isn't? We examine the unstopped suitcase and find one of its wheels coated in grape juice.

We open it up and find some fabric inside splattered with ...blood!

Investigation Complete

Mr Edgeworth is having to do all the work, Ms Cammy Meele is just getting in the way. She's cheerful, sleepy, and more than a little off-kilter.

Miles determines that the dead body must have been stuffed in the suitcase, which opens up the possibility of him being killed elsewhere and transported via the suitcase. At this point, Ms Teneiro shows up and claims the pilot needs Mr Edgeworth to wrap it up quickly because he won't be allowed to investigate much further. Miles is, of course, concerned about the integrity of the crime scene[s] being preserved, so he enlists Ms Teneiro to help him in preserving them. Cammy Meele wants to tag along.

Suspicious. I'm also trying to figure out Rhoda Teneiro's name pun but can't quite sort it out. Have y'all ever played Mad Gab? That's what these character names feel like sometimes, e.g. the card from the game reads "Fin Slump Hearty" and you're supposed to figure out it's Vince Lombardi.

Anyway, see you tomorrow for hopefully a quick wrap-up of this case?? I doubt it could go much longer, but I've been wrong before. Thanks for reading! See you then!

From Ace Attorney Wiki

  • "Rhoda" comes from the Ancient Greek for "rose" or "from the island of Rhodes" (a Greek island that is economically tourist-orientated). Her name shares the first three letters with "rhombus" which, considering her hairstyle and the shape of the buttons on her air hostess uniform, seems fitting.
  • "Teneiro" is similar to the Italian word "tenero", which means "tender", "soft", "delicate", or "kind". This would fit with how she is meant to portray herself in her job
  • Her full English name could be a play on "road to nowhere"
  • Alternatively, it could be a play on "the narrow road" when written surname first. It also bears a phonetic resemblance to Rio de Janeiro, the second largest city of Brazil and a popular holiday destination.

Thanks very much!! I'm immensely pleased that none of that seemed spoilery.

AAI1-2: Turnabout Airlines

We're safely on the ground, kissing the grass like the little girl after the driving lesson scene in 2005's The Pacifier.

Franziska is ...here? We thought she was in Germany! She threatens us not to interfere with her investigation, and sets Det. Gumshoe to guard Miles. The detective is, of course, overjoyed at this prospect - but he doesn't have much info to share. Franziska's been oddly speedy but tight-lipped as usual. We start to wonder if what she's been investigating and our in-flight murder may have something in common...

Gumshoe is so excited to see Edgeworth and Edgeworth's just such a... kuudere? tsundere? Can't decide. One of those. Gumshoe strikes me as one of those people who gives you way more attention than you're looking for, but when he's not around or you haven't seen him for a while, you kinda miss it.

We observe some people at the airport gate, Det. Gumshoe buys a Star-Spangled Lunchbox from a Lunchland employee, finding the draw of the international flag Lunchboxes irresistible. One can only imagine that Angel Starr's business is now booming.

I really thought we were going to get more of a reaction from Franziska upon entering the plane, but she's too busy trying to get the pilot to cooperate. I guess he is interested in Cammy Meele but she's jealous of Franziska interrogating him, calling her "another woman". Lawl.

Starting to wonder if Cammy Meele isn't as much of a mess as I think she is >_> she did have a lot of not-so-great things to say about Rhoda Teneiro and the 'sleepy cute' vibe would throw plenty of people off the scent... Not to mention, IRL murderers have on occasion offered to help with investigations, just to avoid suspicion.

We'll see what we can uncover with Det. Gumshoe tomorrow. See you then!

We go down and see Lablanc really letting them have it, screaming about his luggage, etc. Miles notes that Lablanc's hat/headwrap are of the same fabric as the scrap found in the suitcase that was covered in bloodstains.

Franziska is all for letting us talk to the flight attendants, but not before she clarifies some info. She lays out the likely reasoning behind accusing Miles, and although Gumshoe stands up for him, all he receives are a few strikes of the whip for his troubles. The detective is repeatedly called "Scruffy"... kind of a cute nickname, even if I wish she'd lay off the corporal punishment.

We point out that the suitcase was clearly moved because of the grape juice stains on the wheels. Franziska then accuses Miles of grabbing the souvenir Mr iFly bank from the gift shop, beating Mr Hicks to death, stuffing him in the suitcase and then going to the elevator, disguising any bloodstains with grape juice. Miles points out that the iFly bank was taken from the gift shop after the turbulence, and as such could not be him!

We'll see what else we uncover tomorrow. See you then!

AAI1-2: Turnabout Airlines

We investigate further with Ms Teneiro and find out she's been buying a suitcase on every flight she works because she was disappointed that her design wasn't selling. They'll all be scrapped after this flight.

Something about you need an employee keycard to get to the cargo hold where all the 'hideous', extraneous suitcases are currently being stored. But you don't need an employee keycard to go other places and Ms Teneiro has a special SECOND keycard that is now missing *crowd gasps*...

Idk how SportsBro McLitigation and the Case of the Moved Basketball Hoop was more stirring and passionate than this thing, but it was. I don't even care who murdered the handsome nerd with the cell phone lanyard anymore, and that's not great. I know part of it's on me for taking such a long hiatus in the middle of this case, but even if I played it straight through, I doubt I'd be bowled over by how great it was.

Let's try and figure out who has been playing a rather compact game of body storage next time. See you then!

All righty, we're in the cargo hold now. One of the things I love about the gameplay is where I get to move Edgeworth around in 3rd person... Sometimes in trying to get the Talk button to appear, I have him standing wayyyy too close to the person. Imagine someone tucking your shoulder into their armpit and then talking to you - that's pretty much what I end up doing, most of the time unintentionally. Filing that away as a funny fan art idea.

Gumshoe thinks the suitcase design is 'artsy' and 'post modern'. This, combined with his "True art has always been a war against oppression" opinion... He'd be a renaissance man if he had the funds. He says he used to be a part-time mover. Gumshoe's the type of burly guy you'd ask to help you move just on looks alone.

Mr Hicks had a file on Franziska. Creepy. We talk to Franziska, who's an Interpol liaison now, because of course she is. Miles steps on some glass and we determine that it's probably from the victim's broken glasses. We determine that Mr Hicks was likely Agent Hicks of Interpol, Franziska confirms that she sent him to track down a smuggling ring. He likely revealed his identity to a crew member, who then allowed him entry into the cargo hold to investigate... but then killed him and stuffed him in a suitcase to bring him up in the elevator. With the turbulence, the suitcase popped open and both the body and his wallet's contents were strewn all over the inside of the elevator.

Investigation Complete

I gave Gumshoe quite a workout, had him and Miles climb up and down the stairs multiple times for my own amusement. Every time you present something to him that isn't meaningful, he acts like he's been given a gift, and Edgeworth has to clarify that it's related to the case and is NOT a gift. It's cute!

We'll find out more over lunch. See you then!

AAI1-2: Turnabout Airlines

Franziska continues to insist that the killer must be Rhoda Teneiro, Edgeworth wants more info about the body, Gumshoe gets sent off to retrieve any info he can from the coroner's office. Gumshoe scuttles away up the stairs and returns a short time later, and they show the 3rd person sprite each time, much to my glee. Turns out they're still in the midst of the autopsy, but they can tell that Mr Hicks was battered not only on his neck, but all down his back.

We watch Mr Lablanc force his way into the cargo area past a security guard who is trying to keep the area free of civilian intruders. Mr Lablanc goes over the stairway banister and falls on a large item being shipped in the cargo hold. Could Mr Hicks have fallen a much greater distance and died as a result?

We'll have to use Logic to find out what the real murder weapon was, and who killed him. See you next time!

Took me longer than it should have, but was able to point Edgeworth & Co. in the direction of "Mr Hicks had a great fall". We not only refueled in Zheng Fa between 4:00-5:00AM, but we also transferred cargo. There's a big box that saved Mr Lablanc's life, but Miles posits that said box wasn't always there. This leaves plenty of room for Mr Hicks to have fallen to his death, in a manner consistent with his extensive bruising from a single hit.

We begin another portion of investigating, looking for anything that can help support our theory. See you at lunch!

Hey! The box that wasn't always there had a giant statue in it.
Hey! The statue looks familiar.
Hey! The photo we have of Mr Hicks means this statue's a fake.
Hey! Mr Lablanc is SUPER unhappy now!
Hey! We think the statue was loaded in Zheng Fa, not Europe!
Hey! The covering on the box from Zheng Fa was UNDER our fake statue!
Hey! Time to talk to the increasingly suspect Cammy Meele, who's having a big snoooooze.

Mr Lablanc complimenting Gumshoe's eyes and preferring them to Edgeworth's was... a moment. A gift, made specially for me. Ngl I love dark eyes on characters? Brown, black, blue, doesn't matter.

We'll have to see what she says, if we can keep her awake, next time. See you then!

We start to pin the murder on Cammy Meele, but she's not having it, taking frequent naps and calling our evidence 'circumstantial'. The item in question is still missing - Mr Hicks' cell phone! And what nerd has it on a lanyard around his neck? I wonder if this was more common, even in 2009? I've never seen anyone do it, even in the days before widespread Bluetooth headset usage.

Franziska calls the cell phone, and it rings in... Ms. Rhoda Teneiro's work locker in the flight attendants' room? It's all broken from the fall, but we see a camera...perhaps it still has some incriminating images in its memory. We transfer the photos to Franziska's working phone, and voila! An image of the cargo bay floor before the exchange in Zheng Fa. There are boxes labeled 'bedsheets' in English, and boxes labeled 'cloth' in Borginian [that would be unloaded in Zheng Fa]. As Cammy Meele is the only crew member who can read Borginian, it makes sense that she would have used this specifically to find some cloth to mop up the blood after Mr Hicks' death.

Miles successfully pins it on Cammy Meele. She was afraid of being caught smuggling, she wasn't planning on killing Mr Hicks, but it still happened. Ms. Rhoda Teneiro expresses her gratitude by giving Edgeworth one of her designed suitcases. Edgeworth balks but ultimately 'would never reject a lady's generous offer' [which I'm sure is a line that gets referenced in fanfiction].

Franziska departs immediately, hot on the trail of a larger case, she says she has another agent to help her out, who she imagines we'll meet at some point. She claims to have no time for pleasantries, but really all she needs is Acceptance and Commitment therapy and a hug. Scratch that, several hugs.

Gumshoe expresses his overwhelming joy at being able to be on a case with YOU again, SIR. Which is completely adorable. Edgeworth is barely able to bask in a glory of a case well solved when he receives a phone call - a Mr Ernest Amano, with terrible news that his son has been kidnapped!

The Kidnapped Turnabout is next, with a Wolverine-looking character on the splash page. Wonder what that's about. Is that Lang? I don't know anything about him except for his name.

See you tomorrow!

AAI1-3: Kidnapped Turnabout

Miles Edgeworth asks Gumshoe to look out for him as he follows through on Mr Amano's request that he bring the ransom money. The kidnapper on the phone is using a voice changer, and asks Miles to go to a few different locations before dropping off the cash. The Proto Badger that was at the gate has followed him and beans him over the head!

Real talk: pretty sure being hit hard enough to be out for hours would cause some sort of noticeable damage. As in nearly all entertainment, this causes no ill effects to our fair hero, Mr Edgeworth.

Miles finds himself in a room with the only way out a window high above the reach of any normal human. He meets Kay Faraday, or as she calls herself, the Great Thief "Yatagarasu". Miles is alarmed at this news, but she's a young, quirky girl and we have A LOT of those around this franchise >______>

We try to find a way out of the room. There is way more Badger paraphernalia than I remember XD

We get in touch with Gumshoe and urge him to set up a perimeter. Someone takes the phone from him and announces themselves as Shi-Long Lang of Interpol. He tells Miles that he's on his own, as they're busy catching the kidnapper. Miles' phone dies, and we're back at square one.

I can't brain the Logic here right now. Maybe I'll poke around the room a bit more to see if I can find additional clues. See you tomorrow!

Nooo. Ahhhh. The AA franchise is peppered with little moments that are kinda freaky. I recall I started avoiding playing JFA 2-4 at night, what with Shelly de Killer and all that. D:

AAI1-3: Kidnapped Turnabout

Kay and Miles bum around the room, seeing an identical mirrored room across the hallway, and determining that there is a door in the floor. A floordoor. A trap door? Not really since it's locked, but whatever.

Kay just JUMPS DOWN IN THERE with zero provocation, omg XD We find that there's a removable ladder, and use it to climb over the lockers and out the door. Kay JUMPS down again from the window but Miles takes the safer [and way funnier] route of sliding down a flagpole. The two find themselves in front of the Ten Gallon Hat Saloon, along with nearly 100 members of special forces of some kind, and meet Agent Lang of Interpol.

If this guy's personality was any bigger, there wouldn't be room for the game itself XD Wow. He's very intense about solving cases quickly and efficiently, while still acknowledging and respecting each person who's a part of it. The scads of men that follow his orders are fiercely loyal to the guy, and you can see why. Not only is he impossibly cool, but he is big on morale. Lang is supremely sassy to Edgeworth and tells him he doesn't need to bother, as this case will be solved before you know it. Also calls him a filthy prosecutor. It's rude.

Also rude is Kay informing Gumshoe that she's Edgeworth's assistant now and that she stole his role. Gumshoe is ... incensed at the very suggestion XD I love how possessive he is of helping out "Mr Edgeworth". He's also adorable when you present a variety of items to him - admitting that he mixes up his badge and his wallet often, and sheepishly admitting he doesn't know much about certain things.

We must press on and see what we can find here in Wild West Land. See you next week!

AAI1-3: Kidnapped Turnabout

We poke around the front of the Ten Gallon Hat Saloon, out in front of a garage that's been painted with realistic looking horses, and around various exits, all guarded by policemen loyal to Agent Lang. They won't let us go anywhere! We talk to Officer Meekins, who's dressed in a Badger costume, claiming he's doing essential undercover werk while he brings joy to children with his cute poses. I'm pretty sure I've looked this up at some point, but Officer Meekins is one of the tallest characters in the Ace Attorney franchise.

We think about the footprints and the stolen Badger costume, and decide it would be easier to track badger costume prints than shoes. One trail leads off to the west, but then we lose it as it leaves the mud. The other leads to the painted garage door with the horses. We ask Officer Meekins kindly to step aside so we can continue our investigation. Kay Faraday opens the door and - there's a dead body!

Mr Amano is quick to respond, the dead body is his butler. His name is something, but the odd necklace around his neck is engraved with a name that starts with 'Colin'. Weeeeird.

We'll have to poke around more and investigate. See you tomorrow!

AAI1-3: Kidnapped Turnabout

Yeahhhh. Couldn't wait until tomorrow.

Oliver Deacon [Mr Amano's butler] is an anagram of Colin Devorae [the name engraved on the back of the expensive pendant the butler's corpse is found wearing].

Lang rolls up with various lackeys in tow, and starts accusing Officer Meekins of murder, ready to haul him off.

Edgeworth, while he has no love in particular for Officer Meekins, feels that the law is being trounced upon, and stands up for the guy. I love that when he points out that Lang's logic was clearly wrong, Lang just responds with something like, "I can see your logic is as sound as mine!" ...What. It reminds me of the 'agree to disagree' people on the internets when they are clearly in the wrong and confronted about it.

There's too little blood in the garage for it to be the crime scene, and we must force Officer Meekins to testify and try to save his own sorry hide.

Oh, Japanifornia. You and your gun laws.

Meekins was a bit distracted - he clearly took the Blue Badgermobile and used it to sell sweets [Innocent Drops and Guilty Jawbreakers] to the children in the park. Then he lost track of it [we suspect it was stolen to move the body, maybe?] Lang is having none of it, he's pretty sure Meekins is his perp and as far as he's concerned, he needs to apprehend criminals and the court can sort out the picky details. We try to protest and say that Meekins could not have moved the Blue Badgermobile, but Lang proceeds.

See you next time!

Part of me wanted Edgeworth to just let Lang take Meekins away because he's the worst

He's certainly a crybaby. I'm amazed he gets anything done.

AAI1-3: Kidnapped Turnabout

We wander around looking for other details or clues, and run into the Pink Badger, as played by none other than the inimitable Wendy Oldbag! Amid proliferating 'Edgey-poo's, we gather from her testimony that she saw the shot that killed Mr Deacon.

Kay Faraday at this point introduces her fancy piece of tech, Little Thief. This projects a 3-D image of a scene that can be investigated as you would a normal crime scene in the AA franchise. She says it will display strangely if testimony is inaccurate. Wonder how/when that's gonna play out.

We see the perp aiming the gun, and the victim [who we figure out was wearing a Badger costume] falls face down in front of them. The blood was absorbed internally by the costume itself. Proud of this franchise here - too much entertainment out there having a character being dramatically pushed backwards upon being shot. Blowback/kickback/recoil is equal to impact. Unless the person firing the gun is also on the ground, the victim is not going to be 'blown away' as we see in so many films and TV shows.

Ema Skye helps us determine the location of the downed Badger by detecting the footprints with her mad forensic science skillz.

We return to Oldbag's testimony to examine for contradictions. See you tomorrow!

Discussion question: which one AA character would you take on a weekend road trip [12-16 hours] and why [aside from liking them]? [OK for the character to not share driving responsibilities, so don't disqualify anyone based on age]

I feel like you'd have the most fun with Maya. Maybe Diego Armando pre-poisoning.

Maya would be a good time, for sure. Diego would be fun!

I'm thinking I'd like to take a weekend road trip with...Pearls. Or Mia maybe?

Pearl would be enjoyable because you could show her all sorts of things she's never seen before.
