Hi there. I have played 5 Ace Attorney games inside of a year. Woohoo! As per usual, I'm happy to discuss anything I've played so far, but if we could keep future spoilers to a low roar, that'd be S U P E R.

I have just finished Dual Destinies' 5-5 Turnabout for Tomorrow, and credits have rolled. I'll rank these first 5 cases separately in another post, as the extra DLC case is an extra cost and that sets it apart imo [was it worth 6 bucks? we'll find out!].

5-6 is next and then I'll follow it up with Investigations - even though I've been warned that it's terrible and AAI2 will make up for it [any tips on playing AAI2 are welcome? seems it's not officially localized? have heard tell of a fan translation patch...]. I was promised Detective Gumshoe and, after the last several games, I am sorely in need of Gumshoe.

After those two will come Spirit of Justice, which I managed to snag at a deep discount. The estore has pretty good deals that end 3/31/21, if anyone has AA needs.

Favorite character top 10, most to least:
  1. Dick Gumshoe - Adorable. Friendly. Helpful. Loyal. Looks like he gives great hugs. Sees the bright side of everything. The kinda guy you would want in a crisis scenario for morale alone. Fave.
  2. Miles Edgeworth - Relatability issue. Do you want to get better at maintaining relationships, or do you want to push everyone away? This trauma llama says, "por que no los dos?" in a burgundy suit.
  3. Mia Fey - practically perfect in every way
  4. Godot - is to coffee as I am to tea. Yessss.
  5. Athena Cykes - Relability issue here. Gungho about everything but taking time for our own trauma o_o <3
  6. Simon Blackquill - 19th century England? feudal era Japan? TWO OF A THING I LIKE. *mashes both topics together* Also I love the 'he used to be kind but idk what changed' ...while he's literally off Sydney Carton/Mr Darcy-ing the heck out of the backstory.
  7. Aura Blackquill - her look? fabulous. her attitude? terrible. her willingness to screw everyone over for family? That's showbiz, babeeeeyyyy~
  8. Maya Fey - So cute and upbeat. Might be nostalgia goggles but no other sidekicks really compare. Also, I'm still sorry for showing you the picture of your dead mom before you went off for waterfall training.
  9. Misty Fey - Wonderful. Just wonderful.
  10. Franziska von Karma - this is another relatability issue. Girl needs to grow up, distance herself in every way from Daddio MvK, and embrace being vulnerable.
Honorable Mention: Gregory Edgeworth, bc dead parents and also bc Gregory Peck is my favorite actor >_>

I mean he's my favorite character so it's not "guts." Most people just really like him, but he doesn't have to be everyone's favorite.

Edgeworth not being in someone's top ten would probably be more shocking.

His name is [usually] on the tin, so his built-in popularity doesn't really need my help. Phoenix himself is fine, but I generally dislike main characters? I have yet to sort out exactly why. The best I can guess is that they are designed for wide appeal, and that never really grabs me. Creators don't have the same concerns with secondary/tertiary characters, so the characters end up with better defined interests/quirks/motivations, and that's more interesting to me.

I'm very pleased to hear this!! Thanks so much!

For Dual Destinies, case ranking goes 5, 3, 2, 4, 1.
Case 5 - Turnabout for Tomorrow is neat in that it wraps everything up. Tough to not rank the last case highly, so here we are.
Case 3 - Turnabout Academy is the most enjoyable case to me, plenty of twists and turns even though their understanding of sculpture was WAY off.
Case 2 - The Monstrous Turnabout had issues, but was overall fun and engaging.
Case 4 - The Cosmic Turnabout felt way too long, the standout part was clearing the defendant without actually finding the murderer.
Case 1 - Turnabout Countdown is one of the better first cases iirc, plus it introduces you to new characters and the overall new look of the game, but it doesn't hold up against the others.

I'll have to dig into OSTs soon and let you know the tracks I liked.

I have a Samsung Galaxy S7 [not Edge] running Android 8.0.0. Pretty sure this means I can't play AAI on my phone. According to the entry on Google Play, 'it is possible to purchase the game on an incompatible device', it's your responsibility to make sure it meets the minimum reqs and they won't be issuing refunds.

It's been a long time since we bought a physical game around these parts, son. Already searched the local libraries, and although they have AA1-4 for the DS/3DS, they don't have copies of the newer ones. GameStop's website is borked, when I search it keeps redirecting me to NES cartridges. Every legit-looking copy on eBay is $60+? Amazon has got me over at a barrel at $75+? I guess I could try my luck at the local Disc Replay or Half Price Books, although I'm pretty sure a game like this evaporates as soon as it hits the shelves. Heeeelp.

Special Episode: Turnabout Reclaimed

From the people that brought you, "let the parrot speak", comes an all-new adventure...

This time, an orca is being accused of killing the owner of Shipshape Aquarium in the absence of any other suspects. We have decided this is suspicious and are therefore gathering evidence that we can present to push it towards a murder trial, rather than letting poor, unfairly maligned Orla the orca be put down for her supposed crimes.

We poke around the room, find a lot of random stuff, and make a Sharknado reference.

This whole thing is reminding me of a video I saw where an orca baits some birds by bringing them a fish, then hanging back about 6-10 feet and grinning like there's no tomorrow. The bird with the weakest sense of self-control goes for the fish while the other birds scram... and the orca gets a snack.

We'll do some more investigating the scene of the crime tomorrow! See you then!

Special Episode: Turnabout Reclaimed

I have to say, I'm very happy with the short rejection exchange when we Present during this episode. That's a complaint I had with some of the prior cases - we had to go back and forth for quite a long time when I showed the wrong piece of evidence :|

I have picked up, poked, prodded, and talked to Sasha a bunch so far. There must be something I'm missing, as it's not triggering anything further in the storyline so far. Better luck next time, I guess. See you tomorrow!

Special Episode: Turnabout Reclaimed

...I didn't click on the chalk outline. You guyyyys. I need more sleep.

Sasha Buckler shows us a little bit of the show, and Phoenix gets to play the dastardly Nostache [as he has no mustache] and get splashed with water by Orla. Sasha tells us about Orla and the captain's daily routine of her head-butting him, saying he was a strong guy who was the only one who could handle Orla doing that. Must have been, dang.

We hear about a tip at the Pub O'Danger, so we head over that way. There we meet Norma DePlume, and I am gonna take a wild guess that isn't her real name >_> Not gonna lie, my first thought was 'Sal Manella in drag'? The character design is reminiscent of Dee Vasquez as well. She's got an air of Old Hollywood-era mystery about her.

She claims special dispensation to be around the Shipshape Aquarium, even if it's supposed to be closed. What's up with that? We'll have to see...tomorrow!

Fair... I guess I didn't write it. Thanks for the heads up.

Case 5-5 - Turnabout for Tomorrow

There was a bit of moon rock left over from the courtroom bombing, and since Athena's earring is made of same, we were able to compare it to prove it was the same moon rock that had old blood on it from 7 years ago, cornering the Phantom and causing him to flip out. There's this whole 'no one knows who the Phantom truly is, not even the Phantom' thing that was probably supposed to be cool but I was left feeling a little empty about it.

Phoenix Wrong aka the Phantom gets sniped and taken away. Athena is found Not Guilty. Woohoo~!

Special Episode: Turnabout Reclaimed

Norma DePlume wigs out when we show her a bloody coin we found near the body...and there was about 300 coins in total, many of them at the bottom of the orca tank. 7 lbs of coins, quite enough to kill someone.

She's rather tight-lipped about everything, so we poke around elsewhere. Turns out Pearls met Marlon Rimes the day of the murder bc she wandered off during a trip, so she had to be held for questioning. Funky. Norma DePlume knows more than she's letting on - but apparently the orca had killed another trainer the year before?

We go to court and try to get a clear answer out of Norma DePlume, who's convinced that she saw Orla kill the Captain... it seems Orla was bleeding and once the wound was covered by the hat, it stopped. We determine according to security footage that we never saw the Captain enter the pool... so he must have been dead already.

...I expect us to get in a bit of b8 weirdness over this because Orla the orca must be in seawater, or at least sufficiently salty water. This typically causes bodies to float. If the Captain took on sufficient water in his lungs, he would generally sink but it would take him some time to build up the decomposition gases causing him to naturally float to the surface. Unless we're to believe that Orla was 'helping' him back to the surface like a family pet, in a vain attempt to keep him alive.

We'll follow up with Rimes' testimony tomorrow. See you then!

Special Episode: Turnabout Reclaimed

Phoenix makes a pretty solid case that Orla the orca was being manipulated to create a witness - draw Ms. DePlume in to watch as Orla does a couple predetermined tricks, and it certainly looks bad! We present the Whistle as our evidence that anyone could manipulate Orla, provided they knew the whistle patterns for various tricks. Norma DePlume freaks out over being hoodwinked and her sprite loses some accessories, prompting 'scandalized' reactions from Judge and Phoenix [I'm not really sure what, if anything, happened here].

We send the Bloody Coin to be analyzed.

Blackquill mysteriously produces the Coin Bag, stained with blood that matches the victim, and claims that Orla the orca was manipulating a person into murder?? This could've been an open-and-shut case, but nooo. XD

All righty. We'll see what he's on about next time! See you tomorrow!

Special Episode: Turnabout Reclaimed\

We call out Rimes' testimony that he was in the staff room when the incident occurred. He is covering for the fact that he ran into Pearls in the food prep room and their Rifle-the-penguin-themed gift shop calendars got switched in the confusion.

Rimes admits he didn't hear the noise in the orca room himself, but he heard about it from... Sasha Buckler. Snitches get stitches, my dude. Plus, as her trainer, she wouldn't want to incriminate Orla...would she? Sasha's the one who asked for our help in the first place!!

We will call Sasha Buckler to the stand after a 20 minute recess. Rimes explains that he wanted to testify instead of Sasha, so he was trying to cover it up so she wouldn't have to testify. Awkward. Not the sort of cooperation you need from your client.

Rimes explains that he found the calendar that was in his possession in the nap room and suspects it was probably Sasha's. With that 7am note about meeting the captain by the orca pool, it seemed incriminating.

We'll have to see more tomorrow. See you then!

Special Episode: Turnabout Reclaimed

Sasha talks about how Orla made a noise, and DePlume screamed, and she couldn't tell you which happened first, but she saw the Captain in the middle of all the stuff strewn about. We find out that Captain Shipley was already dead because Orla pushed him up to the surface and knocked down the objects to draw attention to him. There is a red scarf that fell over his neck that would not have been still on the body had he been wearing it prior to being underwater, and fell at the same time as the coins.

We posit that Captain Shipley fell to his death while the pool was empty, then the real perpetrator used the 'life saver' whistle signal to incriminate Orla. Det. Fulbright gives us an UPDATED AUTOPSY REPORT which matches our situation. Blackquill oddly doesn't object, and Orla Shipley is declared... Not Guilty.

However, this doesn't leave Sasha in good standing, so although we won this case, Phoenix and Athena are bummed out. They decide to look into evidence to help prove Sasha's innocence.

We quiz Det. Fulbright. Apparently Sasha and the Captain were the only ones with access to the orca room via security cards, Sasha was cleaning the room from 3-6AM, she had a fight with the Captain that morning, and no one saw the Captain after that... not promising.

Det. Fulbright mentions that Sasha's questioning is still happening, but that he told the guy to take it easy on her. Then he weirdly gives us some prescription medication to give to Sasha?? This is so strange.

We'll have to kill a little time by poking around until we can talk to our client. See you tomorrow!

I like to think my mind was protecting me - I was having a Berenstain Bears moment where I remembered the vest being the same color as the suit [likely bc of how Phoenix's jacket buttons pretty high up in the OG], but goodness. What is going on. The ice blue color of the vest is very weird, and doesn't do anything for him, imo.

Special Episode: Turnabout Reclaimed

We investigate at the Pub O'Danger, and the door that was closed before is open. We go inside and find Dr. Herman Crab, resident veterinarian for the Shipshape Aquarium! He has a very Dr-House-as-played-by-Hugh-Grant vibe. Dr Crab's hair is wild and unruly, and it turns out a baby penguin lives in it, thinking it's a nest. The baby is named Sniper and belongs to Rifle, although it's imprinted on Dr Crab to the point where it never leaves his hair. It's so adorable.

The good Doctor was not at the aquarium yesterday. He does have some info that the argument between the Captain and Sasha happened late the night before the murder, in the Aqua Tunnel. We're supposed to bring Rifle to him somehow.

We run into Norma DePlume as we're in the Aqua Tunnel trying to find Rifle. She tells us how the Captain died one year to the day after the previous trainer was killed, the basis for DePlume's book The Killer Killer Whale. We get into a weird spat about the Swashbuckler Spectacular theme song - DePlume claims it was barbaric, full of references to pillaging and living high on the spoils. Athena insists it was fun and uplifting. Turns out there are two different songs. We play the happy version from our Court Record and DePlume is unnerved. She's never heard this song before, and it's certainly not the old one they were singing a year ago!

DePlume talks about wanting to investigate the Center for Dangerous Animal Control... We'll have to ask about how she plans to do that. See you next week!

Special Episode: Turnabout Reclaimed

Apparently the Center for Dangerous Animal Control suggested Orla be put down after the incident in which last year's trainer died. Shipley refused, and maybe he's been paying them off to keep Orla around? DePlume also thinks Dr Crab is shifty. Probably mutual.

We pick up Pearls at the Agency so she can help us do some 'forensicking' and tell Apollo to shuffle some papers idk

Not gonna lie to you, I love how little Apollo is in this case. After putting me through his first game, this is the proper reward I deserved.

Orla's at the bottom of the pool and it's split, some water and some dry. Pearls starts spraying the luminol - we find some blood residue on the top of a large, pointy skull sculpture. There are also a couple spots of blood on Orla herself! All of a sudden, Orla ain't doin' too hot and you call for Dr Crab. He directs you on how to lift Orla out of the water using the stretcher and hoist combo. Dr Crab clears out her stomach - a few fish, a few fish skeletons, and a sizable, curious-looking pill. Dr Crab goes to seek additional help after assuring Pearls that the luminol didn't endanger the whale [she was worried].

Orla's right as rain again, so we put her back in the water and start filling up the pool.

We talk to Marlon Rimes for a little bit - apparently the whale stretcher can be moved to the show stage but must be operated from the switch in the orca room. Marlon is pretty sure Sasha's innocent, but isn't sure about Orla. He describes a situation just days ago where Orla attacked Sasha, but we're pretty sure it was the lifesaver trick? ...Or was it?

We admire a sign that Sasha made for the new show - it features a painting of the skull sculpture that we found blood residue on earlier. We mention this and Rimes is surprised that it's at the bottom of the orca pool, since it's supposed to be a prop for the new show. I guess Sasha was fighting with the Captain because she heard a rumor that she wouldn't be in the new show.

Sasha very carefully made this new sign... but I noticed it definitely didn't escape the walking path of at least a couple of free-range penguins. Wonder when that's gonna come up.

If you guys haven't seen the video clips of Wellington the rockhopper penguin from the Shedd Aquarium here in Chicago, treat yourselves. They filmed him last year wandering around the aquarium looking at all the different signs and exhibits. He is the same age as I am [33] and so far has lived about 3x as long as the average rockhopper penguin.

What else will we find at the show stage? See you tomorrow!
