AAI1-4: Turnabout Reminiscence

I put together the easiest one, that of the ink stain on Faraday's left hand and the fountain pen in his pocket. If he writes with his left hand, odds are very good that he's left-handed. Which is a good thing. I like lefties. [Bolo is a lefty. ;D]

Mr Faraday's blood is on the outside of one of the evidence bags strewn about the floor.

We point out that Mr Faraday is left-handed, and the gun must've been placed in his right hand after his death.

Investigation Complete

We receive an autopsy report from Det. Badd. Hope it's the updated one. We'll see, next time!

AAI1-4: Turnabout Reminiscence

We get into a big scrape with Franziska about when and where and how the men killed each other and died. She talks about a struggle, but Gumshoe testified that he didn't hear a disturbance inside the room at the time. Faraday died instantly of a stab wound, but Rell died some time after being shot.

There are also no point-blank burn marks, so Rell must have been shot from a distance. Not only is Faraday's gun in the wrong hand for his supposed left-handedness, but his body is improbably on top of Rell's?? Somewhat unlikely that you would try to stab someone with a short-bladed knife at that point, rather than run off and try to get medical attention for your gunshot wound at that point.

Just blood on one ziploc evidence bag? And it's only Faraday's? Plastic bags like that on a hard surface are very slippery, maybe they ran towards each other and fell [and then someone rearranged at least one of the weapons post-mortem?]. There is no Occam's razor, ever. This is Ace Attorney, people!

Franziska's a pain, but she's a cute pain, so we'll let it slide this time. We unravel the mystery of the body pile-up order next. See you soon!

AAI1-4: Turnabout Reminiscence

We figure out that the bodies couldn't have been close to each other, we determine the order of death, and come to the conclusion - another person must have been in the room and killed both these men. The ziploc bag of Faraday's blood was meant for cleanup, to keep the splatter contained.

Calisto Yew and the Judge enter the room, and Det. Gumshoe is immediately accused of the murder of both men, with the Judge testifying that he saw the hallway EMPTY when Gumshoe was supposed to be guarding the door! Gumshoe is incensed at the very suggestion, so we dig into his possible motivations... Yew proposes that a very public argument with Faraday prior where the deceased threatened to reduce Gummy's salary is the perfect opportunity to hold a grudge.

How could anyone accuse sweet, cuddly, adorable Gumshoe? There oughta be a law against harassing such a good guy.

Miles cross-examines Ms. Yew. Gumshoe only had a motive to kill Faraday, but Rell was also dead - Yew explains this away by claiming Rell was a witness that had to be silenced.

...Franziska threatens to whip Ms. Yew if she doesn't stay on task with her line of thinking, and Ms. Yew suggests that 'that might be kind of fun'. HmmmmMMMMM.

We have a copy of a newspaper that mentions another Ms. Yew as a victim of Manny Coachen, possibly a relation? We determine Manny Coachen wanted both men dead, but he was seated in the courtroom gallery, under watchful police surveillance. Gumshoe is still on the hook, and Badd takes him elsewhere to be interrogated.

Did Badd kill 'em? He's the only one without a color scheme, just greys everywhere. 49, or possibly 50 shades? XD

We quiz Calisto Yew on the KG-8 incident, and insist she's related to it because of the victim, Cece Yew! We will continue prodding for info with a smug sense of superiority next time.

See you then!

AAI1-4: Turnabout Reminiscence

We talk to Yew and after plentiful guffaws, she admits that Cece Yew, the victim from KG-8, was her younger sister.

We beg MvK to let us continue our healthy rivalry with Franziska, and he reluctantly lets us. There's a crowd of clueless constables hanging around, so we talk to Calisto Yew a bit longer before returning to Gumshoe, who continues to protest his innocence. He didn't do it, pal!

Gumshoe was assigned by Det. Badd to keep an eye on things. Faraday's blowup at Gummy last week was about his lack of punctuality - the detective had forgotten where he was supposed to be and went to the wrong place. By the time he circled back to Criminal Affairs, he was late. Could happen to anyone!

What I suspect to be Tiny!Kay runs up and kicks Edgeworth in the back of the knees, causing him to collapse like a folding chair. Kids these days. She drops a vending machine swiss roll on the ground as she makes a speedy getaway.

Franziska and Miles figure it wouldn't hurt to examine the hallway once more. Det. Badd and the Judge are discussing something - we'll find out what it is, next time.

See you then!

AAI1-4: Turnabout Reminiscence

Franziska and Miles introduce themselves to the Judge, and inquire further as to the Judge's testimony. He could see the hallway from the men's restroom across the way. He saw Gumshoe buy something from the vending machine, but then when the Judge was about to exit the restroom, there was no one in the hallway at all.

We poke around the hallway investigating, we find Gumshoe's handprint on the bench, ants are carrying away bits of a swiss roll, and there's a suspicious-looking cactus on the window ledge. We quiz Badd on a few items. He heard the gunshot go off just as the trial was about to resume, he was in lobby 1 when the murder happened in lobby 2, Gumshoe was a rando sent over by the force, and he never left the hallway, according to Badd. Franziska did say something about Badd letting the prosecutor die, and his sprite went a little haywire about that - so I'm keeping that in mind.

No one can look more menacing pulling out a mirror, or more self-absorbed to admire himself so frequently. I throw more Organizer items at the guy, and he talks about being close with Faraday, even though he calls him 'a boy with a silver spoon in his mouth'. Badd mentions having life-long regrets related to the KG-8 case.

We're trying Logic. We suspect Gumshoe bought the Swiss roll and ate it on the bench, dropping it at some point and causing the mess and the handprint. I am trying to deduce because we have ONE Swiss roll and they come in packs of TWO... but it's having none of it. ...omg. They wanted me to figure out that the Swiss rolls are $6 and Gumshoe only had $5 to his name because of the Bonus Envelope. Hrrrrgghhhhh, Ace Attorney nonsense strikes again!

We figure the pink piece of trash is the remains of a balloon, popped by Mr Cactus in the window.

Investigation Complete

We meet with the Judge next time. See you then!

Miles and Franziska catch up to the Judge in the courtroom, and he's pretty freaked out for illogical reasons. The Judge has never actually testified before, so this is a franchise first, ain't it?

The Judge talks about going to the bathroom during the court recess, witnessing Gumshoe buying something from the vending machines, and then later going missing, nowhere to be found. The hallway is entirely visible from the men's bathroom, as mentioned previously.

You use the phrase HOLD IT to press, I wish that the Judge responded, "I couldn't!!!" when you ask him why he went to the bathroom

The Judge is 100% sure it was Gumshoe and identifies his hairstyle, stature, and beige trenchcoat. We point out that our dear detective was sitting on the bench under the hallway window, unable to be seen from the men's restroom, as he ate a Swiss roll.

We'll dig a little deeper next time. See you then!

Maybe I'm getting started too early in the day, but why the heck was this so difficult?? Ohhhh. I had to present Det. Badd's testimony before jumping to 'you heard a balloon pop, your honor, not a gunshot' >_______>

We are getting to the bottom of this, we are reminded that Tiny!Kay Faraday was running around with a balloon. The Judge offers to clear Gumshoe's name, but Miles insists on questioning him further. Miles won't rest until he has the perfect explanation to what happened. [aww, he want to question the boyfriend, haha]

We'll rake Gumshoe over some hot coals next time. See you then.

Oooh, intriguing!

AAI1-4: Turnabout Reminiscence

Talented, brilliant, incredible, amazing, show stopping, spectacular, never the same, totally unique
-Lady Gaga

Seriously. I love this franchise. It is truly the best. We interrogate Gumshoe, his lying is the worst, he will be never recognized by the Academy. He claims he never moved more than an inch from the door, we point out the Swiss roll mess he made, he claims there was no one there in the hallway with him, we try to point out Kay was there, but then Kay appears!

She kicks, or attempts to kick, Miles in the shins again. She introduces herself, insists on being called by name directly [rather than by pronouns], and shares her involvement. She helped Gumshoe [who she lovingly refers to as 'Gummy'] buy a 2-pack of Swiss rolls and split them with him, claiming she was saving the second one for her dad.

Edgeworth is about to jump in and level with the kid in a tactful fashion, but Gumshoe insists that he not. Kay reveals that she's aware her dad is dead, she heard the guards discussing it. She can't hold it back any longer, and lets out a wail of anguish. Real tears well up in her eyes and dribble down her cheeks. Miles recognizes that familiar feeling and a certain kinship with Kay, having lost his dad [don't forget DL-6!] all those years before. Miles kneels down to offer her a handkerchief to dry her tears, but-

Kay runs right up to his chest and starts blowing her nose quite noisily in his cravat/jabot thing. The special artwork showing his shocked sprite is... worth the price of admission right there. Seriously. Anything that throws off Miles Edgeworth, I want front row seats.

I couldn't stop laughing, and it was also the end of my lunch at that point. Will young Edgeworth push this young tyke to pay for dry cleaning? Is this the beginning of melting that icy von-Karma-raised exterior??

We'll continue next time! See you then!

Okay so apparently Kay promised her father a bunch of stuff, there's a Promise notebook. The cravat gets lent to her and she can wash and return it.

At the point of eating the Swiss roll, Kay popped a balloon she had and surprised Gummy, causing him to drop the remains of the roll [thus the pink balloon remnant and the ants carrying away bits of the roll. Kay, the lovable scamp.

We go into Lobby No. 1 which smells strongly of Yew's perfume, and talk to Badd about various things - his background with both Yew and Gumshoe, KG-8, and the Yatagarasu. We see the white card that the Yatagarasu sends, and learn some things about the way the grand thief operates.

We review evidence left on the prosecutor's bench, and find out that the knife flips and doubles as the Yatagarasu key! With this special piece of information revealed to Badd, we make him testify again. Hopefully we can extract some useful knowledge from the exchange.

Lang appears here but as a rookie briefly speaking with Badd. Lang's unmistakable BGM was funny to me bc of his reduced status at this point in time.

We'll find out more next time. See you then!

Badd seems relatively unperturbed at the idea of Miles and Franziska poking around. We find the Surveillance Tape still in the VHS player, containing the footage of Rell killing the embassy employee. This gunshot sound effect could be timed to throw investigators off the scent of when the murder took place, everyone could hear since all windows were open.

Badd is not happy that the sound he heard was from a recording. I'm interested to see how he ties in, he doesn't seem badd as things go on, but perhaps it's all an act... Yew is the more likely candidate, but they both seem to be covering something up.

Hope to uncover more soon. See you then!

Edgeworth keeps fighting for Gumshoe's innocence, insists that the gunshot heard was from the evidence VHS tape on the Lobby 2 TV turned all the way up. We point out that the windows in both lobbies were open, allowing the sound of the TV to travel between the otherwise soundproof rooms.

Miles gets ready [and so does the spirited bgm] and accuses Calisto Yew of the murders, claiming they happened long before the sound of the gunshot and therefore freeing up the time allotted for the murder to happen and opening up the list of possible suspects.

Yew does not seem intimidated by this accusation, Miles fears his argument may not be tight enough. She's been laughing at Miles and Franziska the whole time and shows no signs of stopping. Miles' whipped sprite is extra funny, and I love Yew stopping to apply makeup bc she's bored. Her sprite making a lipstick streak across her own cheek when she hears something that unsettles her is great in its subtlety. If she's the killer? Buckle up, I'm sure the sprites will be fun.

We pin the perfume on the Yew. The window was opened to air out the room after perfume was spilled in Lobby 1. Obviously, Badd would be motivated to open the window after she spilled it, controlled in time to hear the gunshot. Yew claims she couldn't have killed Faraday. More testimony!

Yew insists that she wouldn't have killed him and also has no idea where the knife came from. All she saw in evidence was a key! We present the Yatagarasu Key, which flips into a knife. Yew claims to have known this, but even Det. Badd didn't know, and the late Faraday hadn't written this important detail in his case notes. The only person to know would have been the person who sent it in to the police - the Yatagarasu herself!

Calisto Yew confesses that is not her real name. She is the Great Thief Yatagarasu. Faraday found out, and they were trying to throw everyone off the scent by having Rell accuse Faraday of being the Yatagarasu. Rell's reluctance to do so led Yew to kill them both. Yew opened the key into the knife while using the plastic bag to avoid leaving fingerprints. Love this piece of bgm here.

Yew confesses to also being the client in the murder of Deid Mann!! She had hired Rell before, and she's a member of the smuggling ring. She whips out a pistol and fires at Miles before making her escape, Det. Badd in hot pursuit. Kay calls to Miles at the last moment, and he drops to the floor, avoiding the shot.

Yew gets away, Miles gives Gumshoe the Swiss roll from Kay, and Gumshoe swears undying loyalty to "Mr Edgeworth, sir"! Adorable.

We zoom back to modern day, and reminisce. Kay corrects that her father was the Yatagarasu, she wants to restore the noble nature of the Great Thief, and Miles does owe her one for saving his life back then. [insert GoT crossover quote here]. Miles joins in, provided we're not being crimeful. Gummy's cognitive dissonance is resolved - he was having a heck of a time choosing sides between Kay and Miles.

Spooky opening. That title card reading '8 hours earlier'. Miles is chilling and drinking tea. Kay pulls him into investigating <reads smudged handwriting> East and West Germany? No, it's Allebahst and Babahl. Together, they were known as COHDOPIA. Musical sting plays, flashbacks to KG-8 and second KG-8 and Manny Coachen, Rell, Calisto Yew, and everything else we had to deal with last time.

They're going to unveil a statue/sculpture that's a national treasure to both sides. That's probably going to go fine and without any issues. Kay's itching to see it, and Miles warns her against her thieving tendencies.

AAI1-5, Turnabout Ablaze

A Steel Samurai performer enters with a cart and a small baby samurai, idk. Looks suspich. Miles is starstruck by the very idea of the Steel Samurai, who gives out his autograph quickly and with little fanfare. This left me wondering - did the Steel Samurai know Miles would be there? Those things are personalized!

Kay insists they go see the Jammin' Ninja show [Miles could not care less about this], and she really enjoys it. They exit to people wigging out about the Yatagarasu. Kay runs off to find the Yatagarasu, climbing over the barrier between the two embassies [they share a building] and the building is on fire. Miles is such a good, adoptive dad, and Kay is an adorable, unrestrained terror. How will this play out? At this point, I would joke 'that was a good case'.

Miles runs after her, he's in a suit, it's exhausting. He bursts through the door to find Shih-na [remember her?] holding Kay, Gumshoe stamping his feet and looking rather annoyed, and... Manny Coachen's body?? Kay insists she did not kill him, she did noooot... oh hi Miles. [bonus pts to whoever gets my lame joke]

Shih-na is tight-lipped as a clam, Miles explains to a disappointed Gumshoe that the Babahlese embassy is considered part of their country, and that we have no jurisdiction here. I love that Gummy's interpretation of jurisdiction is 'wherever Mr Edgeworth is'!

Franziska suddenly enters with a golden-haired man, Ambassador Palaeno, who has a creepy sprite hand motion. Not great. Miles slides in, announcing himself as Franziska's assistant, asking permission to investigate. Palaeno's fine with it, but Franny most certainly isn't. She turns it around with the pleasant realization that Miles is now her underling, and Franziska is a girl who always needs underlings.

Manny was Palaeno's 'secretariat', which I only thought was a horse until today.

Gummy was on guard duty for the Babahlese embassy. Bruh. You need to stop accepting guard duty missions, something bad always happens. We examine the area, there was a fire, Manny Coachen got stabbed in the neck by a nearby decorative knife with a butterfly on the hilt. The body also has the Yatagarasu key/knife double weapon on his person. We fill Gumshoe in on how this was the knife that killed Mr Faraday, and Calisto Yew had made off with it during her escape.

We'll ask Palaeno more about Cohdopia and investigate the room more later. See you then!

I love that Gummy's interpretation of jurisdiction is 'wherever Mr Edgeworth is'!

Gumshoe believes Edgeworth is Batman

Palaeno keeps plying us with coupons and wringing his hands over the economic impact a murder at the embassy may have on Babahl.

We decide to use the Yatagarasu Key to open a small safe we find in the room. It appears to have two compartments, but I don't have anything on hand to prove that's the case. I like that Miles says, "It's obvious even if you eyeball it" because it absolutely is. Even without the papers carelessly sticking out from the other compartment, it's so easy to see.

I'll have to poke around more next time! See you then!

We figure out that the Yatagarasu Key opens the safe, but the other end, the blade, is the 'key' to the not-so-secret compartment. This contains several items stolen from other countries, pieces of art.

I finally noticed that huuuuge butterfly motif on the wall, so we connect that to the butterfly symbol on the ornate interchangeable handle of the murrrrder weapon. The butterfly is a Babahlese symbol.

We wonder why Franziska is here when she's supposed to be elsewhere. She was investigating at the Allebahstian embassy, where another incident occurred. Franny left Agent Lang in charge [he's also Ambassador Alba's bodyguard] and came over to the Babahlese side. I do enjoy that this embassy has an 'A' side, and a 'B' side, just like a cassette tape or vinyl record.

Gumshoe starts yelling about the note from the Yatagarasu, threatening to reveal the 'dirtiest secret' and how the lab boys are going nuts! XD

We'll find out more next time. See you then!

It's pretty great. Does convey the nervousness and lack of confidence quite well.

AAI1-5, Turnabout Ablaze

Using Logic, we start to question Franziska on why she's here - smuggling investigation, perhap? Fran produces a page, the paper was made ONLY in ye olde Kingdom of Cohdopia. [The longer I think on what the potential pun is in 'Cohdopia', the more my brain pulls towards the 'doppio' scene from Nichijou]

So somewhere in one of the countries is the head of the smuggling ring, and Franny is gonna hunt it down.

We head back to the false back safe and put together that Franziska had page 2 of the 3 page document contained inside. We determine that Manny Coachen was the head of the smuggling ring, Fran is disappointed that she doesn't get to whip him senseless, Miles encourages her that there's more to be seen.

Investigation Complete

Shih-na starts making for the door with Kay in tow. Miles protests, offering to help reduce the number of false arrests made by Interpol [smooooooth...]. Next, we'll cross-examine Shih-na's reasoning for carting Kay off to the clink!

See you then!

Oohhhh. That's legit.

AAI1-5, Turnabout Ablaze

We, like, totally grill Shih-na and find that she thinks Kay killed Coachen for the key. But like why. Also the Organizer says it was pilfered 7 years ago so, like, who had the key really. Whomst.

We experience, like, cute banter between Edgeworth and Shih-na. They're adooooooooorable. Maybe I'll ship them. Shih-na is pretty convinced she saw Kay kill Coachen. What is this, like, a Vegas floor show? There's way more people involved than we thought!

Edgey-poo argues that the Yatagarasu wouldn't be a dumb-dumb and NOT steal the paperwork the great thief like, came for in the first place. He's right, of course. He's always right. He's like, my baby boooooy. I loooooove him.

Shih-na starts, like, glowing with an unearthly pallor and floats high above the Steel Samurai-lookin' figure. Gummy tries to ask her questions, and she responds only with an echoey voice: "There is no Shih-na. Only Zuul." Weird, but tubular. I'm down with it.

Shih-na then, like, comes back down to earth and points out she saw Kay holding the knife. Edgey-poo is going to like, rake her over some hot coals, next time! Like, see you then!

[thank you for surviving this extremely April 1st edition of gameplay update <3]
