Are we talking Trump's specific park thing? Because I was just talking general. Building a statue park is always a pointless idea. But statues get built all the time because they hook peoples attention to certain areas which draws people in.

also, it's not like everyone owned slaves in the 18th century.

i feel like there's a distinction to be made between people who just said "slavery is fine" at the time and people who actually owned slaves.

I think judging faults by standards of the day is mostly appropriate. Columbus for instance was a horrible person even for his day. You can celebrate the good things people did even if they had faults, assuming those faults werent horrendous even for the time period.

the idea of being really attached to a statue of Columbus or whoever is just totally alien to me.

Theres a park sort of near my apartment in Chicago called Oz Park and they have statues of characters from the Wizard of Oz there. Thats way better than some dumb old dead guy.
