So in high school, I generally ran around 170-180 lbs, and I had a brief spike in college where I got up to 210 lbs, before dropping back down to the 180-190 region for most of my adult life. Sadly, when I started my job in March 2019, the combination of stress and poor eating habits (many nights, when it's 10 pm and you're heading home from work and there's about 5 fast food restaurants of the way home, it's just easier to grab a burger). By the time I left my job in October last year, I was pushing 230 and since I've been home I've struggled with the same issues, and for the first time in my life I'm over 240 lbs.

I hate to take the New Years Resolution route, but something about seeing that 240 that was really sobering. So I think the best thing to do is to start off slowly and make a few basic changes that should help both lose weight and get me healthier (especially after my battle with bronchitis).

No more fast food.

One of the toughest things about my new job is that it's a 50 minute drive one way. Which isn't a big deal getting out there but sadly my shift ends at 10 PM here, too, and after an exhausting day of work another near hour of driving, it could be (and was) easy to just grab something, especially when there's like 5 different places a block away from work. So far, I started this on Monday and I haven't been too terribly tempted to get anything so far these 3 days. I also uninstalled all the apps on my phone so I'm not longer looking at discounts at McDonalds and such. And I've loaded up my fridge with both things to cook and things to quickly heat up so when I get home tired and don't want to cook, I've got something there. And also there's a Meijer right next door, too, so I can pick up something healthy there, too.

Drink less soda/pop

This one has always been a tough one because I can always quit for sustained periods of time, but the desire never goes away. I never feel all that different not drinking them, even when I went 3+ months without a pop. So for now I'm gonna aim for drinking less. Right now I'm at a 20 oz per day (usually I take one with me to work) so I think cutting that down to 2-3 times a week would be a good start. Maybe some day I'll phase it out, but for now just starting with small steps.

Go for a walk every night.

This is the toughest one because going from reasonably warm Florida to cold-ass Michigan, with temperatures often below freezing when I get home, it's not exactly fun to bundle up and take a walk here. But at the same time, the closest gym is closed down due to Covid and the next closest is a 35-40 minute drive and there's no space for a treadmill in my place, that I should start putting honest effort into doing a little bit of walking every night. I miss riding my bike but A) it's too cold and B) it got stolen. So walking will have to do for now.

I'll probably expand what I do as time goes on, but I need to start somewhere.

Definitely better to quit altogether, but after failing at this multiple times I found it easier to switch to diet (which tastes weird for a while but then you quickly get used to it) which has now stuck for years.

I drank Coke Zero for a while, but was informed that's even worse than Diet.

This is a big one. I'm pretty lean, but I dropped from 150 to under 140 after I stopped drinking soda (I'm 5'10) and I wasn't even trying to lose weight. I had the same problem that I would keep relapsing but I haven't had a soda in 7 years now

Dead ass just drop the soda entirely and replace it with water. Your quality of life will get so much better.

Good luck.

If you need to drop soda but you frequently feel the desire to drink it after going purely to water, you should try incorporating unsweet tea and club soda. These are both 0 calorie or near-0 calorie alternatives.

I quit soda altogether when I had braces as a teenager. At first, drinking only water became pretty bland, but I started drinking unsweet tea and that did the trick to satisfy the taste need. I never have the desire to drink soda anymore (as long as I don't have any of my favorite soda in the fridge, which was orange soda).

I recommend diet pepsi/Pepsi max over the coca cola alternatives. Especially the Cherry flavour.

Good luck though Rock

Switching to diet pop when I went on a diet helped a lot, and it's stuck with me even now. I tried regular coke after a while of drinking diet and zero and it felt too sweet to me.

I don't think I could ever drop it completely though. Most people will say that carbonated water or club soda are fine alternatives if you're looking for a carbonated option, but I found that they didn't have the same 'mouthfeel', for lack of a better term. It just felt weird to drink them and so I don't think it's as simple as switching over.

Some good early returns, though obviously losing weight at the beginning is the easiest but today I weighed in at 233. I'm trying to limit myself to one weigh-in a week.

You can do this Rock! Sticking to a plan to lose weight isn't easy, and it's not always going to go perfectly, but the fact that you're doing this is awesome.

231 today. I try to avoid fasting or anything before I weigh myself to avoid giving the illusion that I lost more weight than I did.

Pop drinking is a mixed bag, with some successes then some days just going off the rails.

But dropping fast food was super easy. I literally take the backroads home now in the opposite direction of all the fast food places near where I work.

set sail for onederland

does the craving really always stay with you? I used to drink many cans of soda a day, and one day I just decided to stop. after a while, it began to have no power over me and i stopped craving it entirely. If i get some when eating out rarely i often think "this sucks, why did i even order this".

it's like that for me with all junk food and fast food. if i cut it out, after a month or two i'll begin to wonder why i ever craved that stuff. but if I end up having it out of convenience for awhile then i get back to craving it and it's tough to ditch again. I'm currently off the wagon.

but junk food/fast food cravings stick hard. I basically haven't been able to get fast food since March due to covid, but I still crave it.

Honestly after pop and beer, my next favorite thing to drink is water.

Water has an excellent taste.

Not sure if this is what he is referring to but since diet sodas use artificial sweeteners it can actually make you crave more sweets and ultimately make more hungry.

The sweetness tricks you into thinking you are getting something sweet but since its zero calories its not actually satiating.

At the end of the day though, like any diet plan it just comes down to discipline there is nothing inherently bad about diet sodas other than its diet soda, and water is just probably a better alternative.
