As a kid we had a CD that said Columbus. As soon as I got to school I had to switch it to Washington to conform.

I've always hated that song. The other reindeer treat Rudolph like shit until he becomes famous, and then they become his little cheer squad like they're his friends and never get any comeuppance for it.

It's just for the song.

Rudolph would later be assassinated and made a "martyr" and that's why he's presumably lesser known than the other reindeer.

The added stuff is not part of the original song. There were additional silly lyrics added later by kids. A great pre-internet example of a meme actually.

Well let's see if it's a regional thing. Growing up in Seattle, I only heard Columbus. George Washington is too many syllables!

This is how I remember all the additions:

...you would even say it glows (like a lightbulb)
...used to laugh and call him names (like Pinocchio)
...join in any reindeer games (like Monopoly)
...as they shouted out with glee (Yippee!)
...you'll go down in history (like Columbus)

Seattle area here too, it is also Columbus for me, never heard the Washington variant

This is sort of ironic since our state is named for Washington and we kinda have less of a thing for Columbus here

I guess I can see "Like Columbus" because it matches up with "like a lightbulb", but it's still weird because Columbus is such an odd choice to shove in there.

"Like George Washington" fits the same syllables as Pinocchio and Monopoly, which is pretty strong, and George Washington is ubiquitously recognized.

"Like Lincoln" is so bad that it has to be somebody intentionally trying to sabotage one's enjoyment of the song.

Like Columbus: 1-ah-2-3 with a really long mm on the 2.
