How do you rank it?

I feel like this was a console that got overlooked a bit while it was out but has gotten a lot of love in the last 6 or 7 years.

For me, it's gotta be #1. So many amazing games, so many fun memories, and I'm just gonna say it - there's a reason why every Nintendo console since has had some means of using the controller (spoiler it's because it's the best ever).

EDIT: And just to clarify, I'm not counting backwards compatibility here (so Wii doesn't get #1 by virtue of being able to play everything from the Game Cube plus its own titles)

In terms of games, like third probably. In terms of console design, 1st. A purple cube with tiny discs, a carrying handle and a controller that looks ridiculous but is actually fantastic, the peak of absurd designs. PS5 wishes it could look that weird and cool.

Wii > SNES > Switch > Wii U > Gamecube > NES > N64

everyone always underestimates the Wii despite having the strongest first party library and had a great assortment of third party. had a ton of shovelware on it too but don't care about that. Wii U basically was just Gamecube+.

Third I think?

SNES > Switch > GC >= N64 >= Wii U > Wii > NES

Could switch it with the N64, though (or even the Wii U since I really like the system itself a lot despite the limited library)

I'm constructing a list of my 100 favorite games from 1980-2009 (to compliment my 2010-2019 list) and it only has two Wii games on it lol, not to hate on the Wii but I feel that it has the weakest first party library of any major Nintendo console by miles

Prime 3

Galaxy 2
Xenoblade
Kirby's Epic Yarn
DKCR
Kirby's Return to Dreamland
Punch Out
Mario Kart Wii
NSMB Wii
Sin & Punishment

?
like the biggest game it definitely fell short on was Smash and NSMB was probably weaker, though i don't remember it or MK Wii well. controls also helped on getting the best version of Prime 1, Prime 2, and the Pikmin.

...though granted.
being forced to use the Wiimote sucks. controller fixes all.

I would say 5th

NES, Wii, and Switch are my top 3, and it's basically a 3-way tie for #1

SNES is 4th, then GC at 5

Not sure which takes last among N64 and Wii U. They both had a relatively small number of great games, but the N64 also had a truckload of garbage while the Wii U just had a very small but very high-quality library. Wii U is set back a LOT by how almost everything of relevance was ported to 3DS and Switch, and I try not to count rereleases too heavily but Wii U is a really extreme case.

Really depends on how and what I'm ranking, but however I slice it, I get Gamecube 6th, ahead of the Wii U.

Gamecube is also the console (other than the Wii U) that I know the least about. It was around during my MMO days, so there was no room for anything else in my life back then. But I also feel like if GC wasn't "your time," it doesn't really have that much going for it. I dunno, maybe compared to the N64 and its small library, it did, but I remember the NES and SNES. There's some truly worthy games on the Gamecube, but nothing that would compel me to buy it, and I don't think it has any particularly strong cultural or historical importance.

For me it's the SNES first and WiiU last while the other five are a bit more fluid. The Switch has a chance to solidify its place in second and may make a run for first when it is all said and done.

Let's go with...

SNES > Switch > Wii > Gamecube > NES > N64 > WiiU

Yeah the Wii U actually had a stunningly strong line-up of then-exclusives, but the fact that almost every single notable one has been ported to something else at this point (or in the cases of Smash and Splatoon, obsoleted by sequels that include almost everything from the originals) makes it basically an orphaned console. There's no chance it will experience the afterlife popularity that the Cube has had. Were it not for all the ports, it absolutely could have gone down as a console that saw a surge in popularity 10 years later.

I feel like the Switch is an overrated console. I've ended up spending a ton of money on it and it's left me a bit jaded about it.

There's only a couple games I've enjoyed on it that I could only get on Switch, and the fact that it's been 10 years and I'm still waiting for a new Metroid game sucks. Since it's launch, I've played Breath of the Wild, Super Mario Odyssey, Octopath Traveller, Hyrule Warriors, Mario + Rabbits, and the Link's Awakening Remake. That's pretty much it. I play everything else on PS4.

But my wife and kids use it more than I do, which is where the most expense has come from. We go through joy cons like crazy from drift and input issues, and then with Animal Crossing, we had to get a second copy of the game and a Switch Lite so we could have separate islands, one for the kids and one for my wife (though she gave me the device for Father's Day lol). A good marketing strategy I guess, but I am not impressed.

I'm also a couch gamer. I don't do handhelds. I find handheld gaming uncomfortable, and so the Switch stays docked about 95% of the time.

definitely the case for it, though i don't think that means it should be lower as a result. it's normal for consoles to get their best games ported eventually and shouldn't be a knock against them. surprised the WIi U is getting ranked so low consistently considering it also has a fairly strong first party library. especially if you're gonna say Twilight Princess is a Gamecube game since that means Breath of the Wild is a Wii U game. looking at the first party...

BOTW
NSMBU
Wonderful 101
Bayonetta 2
Mario 3D World
DKCTF
MK8
Captain Toad
Smash
Kirby and the Rainbow Curse
Xenoblade Chronicles X
Splatoon
Mario Maker
Yoshi's Wooly World

if you wanna count upgrades and remakes that make other ones obsolete too you can throw in Pikmin 3, Wind Waker HD, and Twilight Princess HD too. Switch basically stole 8 of those, made 3 obsolete, so i think we're left with...

Kirby and the Rainbow Curse
Xenoblade Chronicles X
Yoshi's Wooly World

along with the Zelda HD remakes.
...which honestly puts it better than the N64 and comparable to the Gamecube. right now only GCN exclusives not made obsolete left are:

FE: PoR
Eternal Darkness
F-Zero GX
Paper Mario

N64 has Paper Mario and that's probably it. that system's raided pretty hard and eventually you just know they'll make a Paper Mario Collection, it's a pretty optimal one to do the same to it as what was done with Mario.

but ultimately a big reason the Switch is good is because it yoinked almost all the Wii U games. Wii did that to the Gamecube too and the N64's been yoinked by everything.

As I mentioned the last time we went through this, this is on 3DS. It's not Switch, but it does preclude it from being a Wii U exclusive. Pretty sure it's Xenoblade X and Kirby and the Rainbow Curse. Next biggest things after those are probably Game & Wario and Nintendo Land.

I think you're being a little too harsh on some games that have had sequels come out. Mario Kart: Double Dash, for instance, is unique enough that I really don't feel like it was made obsolete by future entries. There's reason enough to go check that one out in 2020 other than completion's sake.

Smash Ultimate and Splatoon 2 literally have almost everything that Smash 4 and Splatoon 1 had, minus a few features/stages, and Splatoon 1's campaign.

There's also a big difference between games getting ported/remade/compiled 10-20 years and several console generations later and having 90% of your library ported to your immediate successor in the same decade.

3DS port of Wooly World isn't a better game so i don't count it as a result. when the port is superior sure but in that case it isn't, basically am just taking the emulation standard to it: on which system would this best be to play? a handheld port that plays worse just doesn't make that cut. i do still disagree with this standard being applied since it's unfair to the systems as it's not taking their library into consideration as-is, it's looking at what they've got in the future. still is one that can be used though so that's just grumblings of different approaches.

also if being followed up by a system that yoinks your game, you've gotta take out some of the Gamecube's best games.

Prime 1 and 2 - better on Wii
RE4 - better on Wii
Pikmin 1 and 2 - better on Wii

though granted, Wii U to Switch was a lot more drastic in a really short generation. it just says a lot that the Switch is rated so highly when the Wii U is rated so lowly, despite the reason for its quality library being largely because of the Wii U games.
