Loved the GameCube, the fondest memories of my childhood were playing on that console. So many randomass games that I would play again right now.

I'm basically sort of ignoring ports on other consoles unless the port's significantly upgraded, and even then - I'm not stripping credit from the GC for WW just because WWHD exists, but WWHD does give Wii U points too

If I were going to count virtual console stuff though I would just say the PC is the best Nintendo system and be done with it lol

The revisionism for the gamecube is interesting to me. Gamecube was pretty widely considered the worst nintendo system before the WiiU until recently. I guess it was a formative console for a lot of people born in the early 90s.

I've never heard it widely considered the worst, even when it was new. It didn't sell well, but it always seemed highly acclaimed.

The biggest problem about the GameCube is that the PS2 was so much better in every single aspect that unless you made your own money or your parents were rich and bought you everything, owning one was kinda pointless

And then the Wii came out and played all its games right from the start

pretty sure even years ago the N64 was considered the worst Nintendo system, with everyone ignoring stuff like Virtual Boy. from there the Wii often got that title even though it has one of the strongest first party libraries and had some of the best third party for Nintendo consoles - Switch, SNES, and NES are the only ones better on that. it just has ungodly amounts of shovelware, wiimote is hit or miss, and there's a stigma it never recovered from for being "too kiddy" and "too casual." currently i guess the Wii U is considered the worst but i assume it'll get some respect later when people break down just how much of the Switch's library is due to the Wii U's first party strength.

There's only a couple games I've enjoyed on it that I could only get on Switch, and the fact that it's been 10 years and I'm still waiting for a new Metroid game sucks. Since it's launch, I've played Breath of the Wild, Super Mario Odyssey, Octopath Traveller, Hyrule Warriors, Mario + Rabbits, and the Link's Awakening Remake. That's pretty much it. I play everything else on PS4.

But my wife and kids use it more than I do, which is where the most expense has come from. We go through joy cons like crazy from drift and input issues, and then with Animal Crossing, we had to get a second copy of the game and a Switch Lite so we could have separate islands, one for the kids and one for my wife (though she gave me the device for Father's Day lol). A good marketing strategy I guess, but I am not impressed.

I'm also a couch gamer. I don't do handhelds. I find handheld gaming uncomfortable, and so the Switch stays docked about 95% of the time.

I love portable consoles

Actually the 3DS is probably my #1 console over all, and if I was feeling mean I might penalize the Switch for killing true Nintendo handhelds for at least a generation...!

It seems like there's really no consistency with the ranking of NES, N64, Cube and Wii. SNES and Switch are consistently ranked high, and Wii U is consistently ranked low.

And the Cube was more powerful than PS2, that's a fact. Kinda baffling in retrospect that the latter was so infinitely more successful. Guess Nintendo's "kiddy" reputation turned off third parties.

This was the era of GTA and Halo. Gamecube just didn't capture the zeitgeist.

Not just that, but third party developers have always had trouble competing with Nintendo on Nintendos consoles, whereas they dont have that problem with Sony on PlayStation or Microsoft on Xbox.

not being able to play dvds was an issue back then. also i believe both ps2 and xbox were online capable?

Smash 4 on WIi U made Melee obsolete.
Ultimate on Switch made everything else in the series obsolete.

only thing it had anything over was on Brawl and maybe Smash 4 3DS, though the appeal there is entirely different so i wouldn't make a direct comparison.

No it didn't

Melee plays much differently than newer games in the series. Whether that's good or bad is a matter of preference, but it's not obsolete (for the record, 64 isn't obsolete either)

Anyway, you know people like Melee and someone was going to take the bait. It ended up being me I guess... and I'm not even a big Melee guy these days!

it's not a bad console, but it had fierce competition at the time. if your only console was a GC when the PS2 and Xbox were relevant, it was kind of sad

-Well, it's not a PS2 but it definitely had some good exclusives.
-Controller is weird but it's a step up from 64 because you can sanely emulate it with a normal controller.
-Has some nice graphics for the day too.
-The entire concept of the Wii hardware is bad, I'd say.
-N64 library is ridiculously tiny albeit with exclusives that kind of redeem it.
-NES games you can definitely say aged but the library is basically as good as the SNES.
-Wii U brought the hardware and exclusives pretty well.

Wii U is godly for its capability to play all the systems that came before it - some involving modding sure, but even without there's a huge catalogue to play alongside Virtual Console and the Wii BC.

... from its own offerings though, it's a definite bottom tier sadly.
