Terrible news, I actually had the release date scheduled off work and I am off through Thanksgiving. Probably good news for AC: Valhalla, I may consider getting that at release now.

By the sounds of things, CDPR's been crunching their development team hard to make the current deadline, so I'm all in favour of pushing it back. Getting a game on time is never so important that I'd want people to sacrifice their health for it.

In all likelihood, yes, because this isn't enough of a delay to actually significantly relax the schedule. More likely, this is actually "we told them to make this deadline but they kept whining some nonsense about needing more than 3 hours of a sleep a week so they failed to make it and we had to push the deadline back a bit."

Besides trying to meet seasonal deadlines (i.e. Christmas), what incentive is there to rush something if there are no other competition? Please note I have little to no business aptitude, so what do I know?

When it comes to certain products or services, if you cannot meet your client's needs, another product/service may eventually replace you. With video games, unless someone actually introduces something to compete with you, fans are essentially at your mercy.

At some point you will lose fans even if there is no competition but besides a game getting cancelled or delayed indefinitely (i.e. Star Citizen), some fans will just continue to wait if there is nothing to feel that void.

I look forward to playing Bravely Default II. It being delayed to 2021 or even later, is not going to affect the gameplay when it actually does come out.

What do I not understand regarding delays and how some fans are actually upset by it?

The christmas videogame boon isn't something to ignore, it does a /lot/.
It's also worth remembering that videogame companies tend to go into a low-population while designing the broad elements, and when it gets closer to when it's close to publishing, they pull a bunch of people in to finish it.

Videogame companies don't have serious operating costs for just existing, it's all about the people who work there and their salary. When they bring a bunch of people in, their operating costs skyrocket because of that, so, they try and move things along faster.
Those deadlines aren't just for consumers, they're also for the company itself.

A friend of mine had a /very/ serious cancer, living in the hospital for months at a time, and she was afraid she wouldn't be alive by the time that cyberpunk would come out.
She's gotten a /lot/ better since that time, and she's out of the hospital, but that was still a really real concern.

Pleasing shareholders, mostly. If you say "we'll have a game out this Christmas that will make us a bunch of money" and then you don't have a game out by Christmas, they tend to invest elsewhere. Of course, that tends to lead to businessmen with little understanding of the development process making overly optimistic promises and demanding that their workforces work unreasonably long, hard hours to realize them.

Thank you for that insight. Is it fair to say game companies may not have regular flow of income outside of release periods and maybe instead a roller coaster ride?

By extension, it's worth noting that this is more of a problem for the AAA industry than for indie games (since indie studios tend not to have shares to hold). It still absolutely happens in indie studios, particularly where so many of them are one missed deadline away from being unable to pay their staff's rents, but you tend to get less of the "executive that played a mobile game that one time has decided that you can totally make this whole game in two months" problem that plagues larger publishers. Early Access also helps to alleviate some of the deadline pressure, since you can release an unfinished project and work on it at a more reasonable pace while still maintaining a revenue stream from it.

Yeah, they dont hold up, I am aware. They were popular on release, and for their era they were good games that were generally well received.

Again, Wym? If a game goes platinum it's still a miss if I dont want to play it a decade or more after the fact?

Yeah, it's a massive boom and bust cycle, a new game comes out and they get millions in a few weeks, and then it slowly dies out over time as the popularity dies out.

With GoG, CDPR has a more stable income than most game companies though, because although it's not massively popular, and they take less of a cut than Steam, it's still something. Compare that to (as a random example because I've been playing their new game a lot) Super Giant Games, they have no source of income between games.

You can't say "BUT IN RETROSPECT!" when it comes to determining whether a company released a good game or not. You can argue about a honeymoon period, or hype sales, but that doesn't even remotely apply here because before the first Witcher CDPR was "literally who?" tier.

So his claim stands. They've released nothing but solid games. If they aged poorly that's a matter of retrospective, from an unfair vantage point. A lot of games that were fondly remembered don't necessarily hold up as well as they did then.

Also, CDPR had a humble and fair start and has only improved. For European developers sadly the trend is usually the opposite.

they address that in the statement they made

according to them it actually can be a big difference. And I suppose it makes sense because Im sure the team working on the game is largest before release and then dwindles down
