I never understood why some countries lie so badly about their numbers. Like obviously it's to make them look good, but if no one believes them then are they succeeding? If China under-reported by a factor of ten they can still achieve their goal of "looking good" while seeming believable to the general population.

Back in 1976 there was a massive earthquake in Tangshan, China. It was originally said to have been 8.1 but it was downgraded to 7.6 or something like that.
The reason it was downgraded was because, at the time, any earthquake 8.0 or above meant that assistance from other countries was mandatory. It would trigger an automatic response for humanitarian reasons. To prevent outsiders from coming into China, they reduced the magnitude. The entire City was destroyed and the death toll is believed to be only a third of the actual figure.
Could be things like that at play with this

It's moreso about controlling the populace. If Trump could censor the media to say what he wanted, he could have won this election by tens of millions based on his "crushing" of the virus.

I think it's safe to say that the dutch aren't reporting from China or with numbers that were not given to them from China itself indirectly or directly.

It's why the WHO rightly took such a big hit as being in China's pockets. They have to know those numbers are bunk, and they even advised the entire world based on what they had to of known was garbage numbers. They spent more time worrying about the stigma on China and Wuhan via naming and travel bans than they did on world safety or providing accurate analysis of the situation. Sure, some of that is on China for not providing it. However, the WHO further cozied up to them after it was readily apparent also.

Someone on facebook is doing an online survey for a research paper she is writing of her friends list to see who would get a vaccine, in general. It's 95+% no.
I pointed out the survey had bias that needed to be accounted for due to sample to take a jab at the yard signs in my area dictate popularity nationwide crowd and she got offended because she said she knows how to write research papers. Lol. Oops.

Latest studies have been under 40% saying they won't get it. I suspect the majority of those will accept it after a month of availability and widespread approval (including from European agencies), since they're only responding that way because the media whipped them into a skepticism frenzy over the notion of it being "rushed."

Well deserved considering how stupid we know they've been with the virus.

Also got word that of them the one person hospitalized happened to be one of the youngest adults(A cousin to me unless I'm crazy).

I don't keep contact with them in normal times, so this is word getting to me through a longer chain.

Yeah. It's a wrap for a lot of America. They are just ignorant and oblivious. My fiancee for example refuses to get a vaccine, refuses to follow any orders to not see people outside of our household, and complains about wearing masks every chance she gets. I have zero doubt she will get me killed right before I can get a vaccine. She doesn't care though and won't until someone in her family succumbs to it. And, unfortunately, without that happening she will point to it all being overblown and me being a scaredy-cat otherwise.

So, I mean, what can you do? I am not like Red. I don't wish tragedy on people to feel superior. It is frustrating though.

For example, this was a conversation yesterday.

Her: "I'm furious. People at work have covid and they won't tell us who!"

Me: "They really can't because of HIPAA. It's not really their choice"

Her: "It's bullshit. I just went to see my grandmother and my mother just last night. If they would die, I am suing them. They are assholes. They don't care if people's families die. Just that we go to work. Fuck them."

Me: "I mean, that isn't on them. That is on you."

Her: "How?"

Me: "I mean, it isn't your workplace's fault that you continue to ignore medic guidance from the CDC and state health officials and governor orders. If you gave it to your mother or grandmother, that is actually your fault for flaunting the guidelines, not them. You could sue them all day, but you would be found at fault for that, not them."

Her: "Fuck you. Seriously. Fuck you. Asshole."

COVID-19 has caused an increase of break-up/divorce. While a good portion of it was due to previous problems that was exasperated by the lock-down some of it was caused by the difference in opinion towards COVID both for themselves and towards handling their children.

Is there any way you can reach a compromise? Like even getting her to wear a mask in public and avoid touching her face or yourself until after she washes her hands will go a long way in reducing your risk. Ignoring the COVID part, being that dismissive of your feelings towards something you find important is a bit of an issue going forward.

She wears a mask at work and to go places if they require it. She just complains about it a lot. Her family and co-workers feed her nonsense all day though. It's hard to get through to her.

The other day I had to explain to her she was using white supremacist sources and Sandy Hook deniers as sources. She was just like "They say everyone is racists nowadays if you don't agree with them, so who cares what they say." I mean, she did have a point there but... It shows you the information being fed to her nonstop that I am up against. It's tough.

now this one has a result that's very limited. with the answer being even if she's aware what you're saying is true, she won't care. at that point the question is how much she agrees with it... and yeah. don't know how much you want to personally go on this route.

like yes she's got a point in saying it's currently overused by people but you aren't one of them. it's a standard de-radicalization tool there to know what they're talking about and then pull them away but to do that you've gotta have them accept that you know what they're talking about. i'd have assumed that's already cleared but maybe not?

She is a very dramatic person. If she can find drama, she is there. Lol. She doesn't realize that but it's so her personality. She has worked for 4 months at this point and she has complained to management like 5 different times about various things already. There is always some drama going on with work lol.

That said. She just sent me this "People are saying there are bad things in it" regarding the vaccine. Who? Who is these people? She very often will never answer this and it is almost always her mother and sister. But, since she started working it is her co-workers a lot also. I mean, we live in an area that is strong in this regard. So it is hard to tell her otherwise because she probably does hear it all day. That girls poll of 95+% no wasn't surprising here.

haven't heard this one. can think of three directions this one is but maybe there's something i'm not familiar with.
1) mRNA ignorance. this is fair as it's only 3 years old in human testing but a bit of reading and talking to professionals can go a long way. i mean she won't but still.

2) weird rumors that didn't make sense anywhere. i think i saw one talking about fertility issues but uhhh that's covid. and in men. this one dovetails into the above and i'd expect some stuff to be spread here, particularly complications of those with autoimmune disorders being pushed onto everyone else.

2) AstraZeneca issues. this one's been in news for a bit because they had to stop trials once and have a lawsuit occurring in India because someone said they got neurological and psychological damage. of course as you go down the telephone line you lose which vaccine is being talked about and apply it to all of them, even though they're extremely different.

if there's a fourth or other rumors i dunno.

Well one thing I've seen recently is from the hyper religious people saying it's evil or something because scientists used luciferase enzymes while testing it. Well, I was hesitant because I didnt know much about how it was made. Last night they had dr Fauci on tv taking questions and he broke it down well. I mean, I have a decent understanding of how viruses work and how the vaccine interacts with it.
Im not hesitant anymore.
I know that a lot of people will not understand it, not because Im smarter than they are but because I took the time to learn about it and many people wont sit dont long enough to learn much of anything. Sorry but its true.
My hesitation came primarily out of concern of the fact that government and most industry puts money over health. They would make it out of sugar water if they thought that would keep people working. None of them are involved in so that relieved me.
Im pretty far down the line of receiving it so by the time my number is called, most everyone will have had the shot.
Even after that though, the mask will be as normal as underwear for me. Ill wear one from now on when out of the house.

This mentality has actually been kind of misrepresentated by people. We have perfectly fine medical care...if you can pay for it. Our health care system isn't really in the business of selling treatments that don't work(This part of it is in fact fairly well regulated). They are in the business of finding treatments that work and then selling them for way more than they actually cost.

You might find the occasional crooked doctor or pharmacist, but by and large our health care system isn't selling nonsense.
