(Since the probability is close to 100 the error bars are pretty asymmetric, so the average staying roughly the same while the error bars shrink is very good).

Also thats enough severe cases with all in the placebo group that it seems quite likely that the vaccine actually does lower the chance of severe illness even conditional on still getting covid!

This article may have already been posted. I dont always read everything in this topic. But its a story of a nurse in South Dakota talking about how some patients just refuse to accept that they have covid and blame it on something else, all the way down to their dying breath. No doubt Covid affects everyone differently, and while most are fine, it does hit some very hard.

Some of those boisterous deniers are ones that get hit hard with it, and if you think it causes them to have a change of heart, you might want to think otherwise. Many of those kind of people will simply deny it to their death.

According to this chart of cases per 100,000, the Dakotas are at the number 1 and 2 spots and I think I know why, the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally that they held may have been a super spreader event, Iowa is at third which I don't know why it is, they did not hold any big events that I can think of. Wisconsin is ahead of Nebraska on this chart but on the worldometers total cases per million chart, Nebraska had actually overtaken it, not sure which chart is more accurate.

Sturgis probably seeded a lot of their cases, but the really big thing is that SD's governor (Noem) is a lunatic who is against (I believe all? Masks for sure) anti-covid measures, and ND's only very recently instituted a mask mandate.

I think the poll was very close to 50/50. I remember being of the opinion that covid was already worse and that it was obviously going to be way worse by the end in any realistic scenario.

Because thousands of people died suddenly in moments due to terrorism in a large blow to our nation that we saw happen basically live in front of our eyes.

9/11 and Pearl Harbor are by far the worst tragedies in American history.

Because they were centered against our nations specifically, because they were sudden and jarring, and because foreign entities inflicted the sudden damage in horrific ways.

Smoking doesn't completely reshape society or knock out millions of jobs, I'd argue that comparing covid to smoking is far more cavalier than comparing covid to foreign attacks. It's not just the number of deaths, in my opinion, but rather how the events have required us to drastically change our day-to-day lives.

I think it depends on what legacy COVID-19 leaves behind. Are we going to be more prone to shutdowns due to a spike of the flu or other diseases? Will the US revamp its entire medical system so they can be better prepared? Will stores require people to have masks and will plexiglass at cash registers be the norm?

9/11 was awful, the pandemic is awful, both for very different reasons, and I get where 9/11 being an attack on American soil is conceivably worse than the deaths that are happening due to COVID.

However, we should have never gotten to this point where we are getting more deaths than 9/11 per day due to COVID. It's been grossly negligent in efforts to contain it, so that's why we are, where we are, but since we are at this point it's just shitty.

We don't have to imagine a situation where we have to compare the two now, because we are at that point.
