Masks could make you sick if you are re-wearing the same one repeatedly over and over without sanitizing it, but else-wise shouldn't be an issue at all. I wear masks every year during allergy season from the middle of may to the middle of june already due to pollen.

The claims of a weakened immune system are basically the same claim as washing your hands and such as weakening your immune system. That argument is for your immune system to be stronger you have to be disposed to the things in life to build immunity to them. If you avoid them forever, you would have it worse if you did eventually get it. It's not a very good argument for the most part.

Not looked at Florida numbers since returning to work a few weeks back but I just drove by a testing site with literally zero queue. Just the testers sat by themselves in an empty car park. Maybe it's appointment only or something but that's a stark contrast from the 5+ hour waits to not even get tested when I was trying to get tested.

Also the missus had to go to the doctors recently and they just tested her for COVID anyway even though it wasn't why she was there.

Taught a face-to-face college class today. Pleasantly surprised. Our campus seems to be handling it well. We're not a huge school though.

All the students were wearing masks and remained distant. No crowds outside I could see.

If even our school has case increases, which based on first impressions is handling it PERFECTLY, then we'll see just how truly screwed we are.

The reason you haven't seen it on the news too much recently is because the news is good and they generally only like to report bad things.

But

https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2020/us/coronavirus-us-cases.html#states

Coronavirus trends are going down in the US. Arizona, Alabama, Florida, etc cases are plummeting. Almost all states seem to be descending.

So what has changed really? Some immunity is being introduced into their areas.

Also of note, despite the much larger caseloads this summer compared to spring, the death rate was much, much lower. Some of this is because lack of testing in the spring. However, it stands to reason that treating the virus has gotten a lot better also.

So, we will connect all the dots now.

Arizona, Alabama, Florida are plummeting.

Arizona did not mandate masks.

Alabama did (though whether it is being followed is questionable in a very republican state).

Florida did not mandate masks.

Alabama
https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2020/us/alabama-coronavirus-cases.html

Florida
https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2020/us/florida-coronavirus-cases.html

Arizona
https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2020/us/arizona-coronavirus-cases.html

Texas
https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2020/us/texas-coronavirus-cases.html

So... one... Texas isn't even what I was talking about. Texas is arguably in a plateau / very slight descent.

The states majorly plummeting listed above... 2 of the 3 never mandated masks. So, whether you couldn't understand the areas I was referring to or not, it is unlikely your conclusion that "cracking down on mask mandates and social distancing" is the reason. Texas, which you pointed to as doing it, isn't dropping with those that haven't.

Or maybe people got more serious about adhering to social distancing and mask wearing due to exploding case counts in their states, regardless of whether that change in behavior was legally mandated

Similarly, new outbreaks in Europe were likely due to people letting their guard down and no longer taking distancing as seriously, with people falsely believing the danger was over.

Nope. You are actually wrong. Perhaps you should re-read the exchanges.

He argued Ivanka was a federal employee. I questioned whether that was accurate. He argued that she HAD TO BE ONE because she works in the white house. I pointed out that the law actually states that unpaid workers in the federal branch are actually not considered employees. He disputed this rigorously. I stated with Supreme Court rulings and law stating as such that Ivanka was not a federal employee. He continued to dispute this and claimed she had to be because the supreme court rulings and such are wrong (hint: They are not wrong). (He also misread a law and what it means to try and support himself) This debate continued for a few more passages.

Then he uncovered an article in his googling trying to argue that the supreme court rulings don't exist that said Ivanka willingly offered to be considered an employee despite the law in order to assuage fears of her being able to use her position unethically and being bound by laws as an employee.

Immediately upon that new information being offered up, I said I was 100% wrong in that Ivanka was not a federal employee. The knucklehead I was arguing with somehow thought that this meant he was correct in all his arguings (which he was on the conclusion that Ivanka was a federal employee) in which he was wrong on at all points. All the things I pointed out for why I figured she wasn't an employee are rulings and laws and is exactly why it even existed that she made that special agreement. I stated that yes he was correct in the conclusion, and I was wrong (admitting you are wrong when you are is not hard). I, however, did state that all the arguings he did for why she was a federal employee however were wrong (which they were). It was nothing other than she made a special agreement due to the law existing the way it was that I was referring to, in order to lay minds at ease.

My reasoning for why an unpaid federal worker is not considered an employee is 100% correct. However, I was unaware that Ivanka made a special agreement regarding it.

His reasoning that the laws don't exist that way and Ivanka had to be a federal employee was wrong. However, he was correct she was considered a federal employee due to a special agreement regarding it that he unearthed at the very end of our discussion.

Not important though. I have admitted when I am wrong probably more times than the entire politics topic has combined. Not because you are less wrong either.

Anywho... back to the virus!

Florida may not have mandated masks but a ton of counties did. Everyone has been wearing masks in the Orange county (Orlando) and surrounding areas for months now. It is very rare to see someone not wearing a mask. It's definitely mandatory here and in the surrounding counties

Edit: Just checked. Mandatory here since June. In a neighboring county it was mandatory in April as the missus had her car battery die there and we only had 1 mask in the car at that time. So it was a pain in the ass.

Watching some new coverage about how college campuses are dealing with coronavirus outbreaks due to parties and such.....I can say as a former college student I am not surprised by this at all. Nothing will stop college students from partying. I remember on my campus, Thursday nights were the big party night. It just so happened that someone had died one Thursday, it was alcohol related due to partying. The very next Thursday, everyone was making party plans again, and proceeded to party like nothing had happened. I was so disgusted by it all I had written an op-ed piece with a rather scathing review of party culture on campus that I was going to submit to the campus paper, but a good friend of mine convinced me not to.

Coronavirus will not stop college kids from partying. And to think that it will is just complete ignorance of that scene.

As infuriating as it is that college kids are being so irresponsible, it was also incredibly easy to predict that they would be. The bulk of the blame for this really lies with university administrators who went forward with in-person semesters despite the fact that they were obviously going to lead to huge outbreaks with very high probability because they didnt want to risk students withdrawing for the semester and taking the financial hit.

It was a shot at the overreaction of people and their disregard for human life so they can watch a sport, not whether or not football was going to resume. It was relevant because if you change the 4-year period of typical universities, you will destroy college football as we know it today basically.

What are you talking about? You brought up overreactions. I said it sounds like you are actually the one overreacting.

You went from some cases in some colleges to people disregarding life so they could play a sport. It's such a 0 to 100 that when you said about overreactions I said it sounds like you were the one overreacting.

Some of you come off as wanting everything to fail, everyone that doesn't agree with you is evil and has no respect for life, and etc.

Breathe a lil. We already had the big ten petition from Fields say he wanted the season to go on because he felt SAFER if the season went on due to extra testing, precautions, etc.

So I recently moved to Vegas for a new job, but since it was really short notice I still don't have an apartment, so I'd been staying at one of the casinos until today.

Honestly I was pretty impressed by their protocols - temperature checks at the door, mask requirements inside, lots of hand sanitizer - but it was still kinda harrowing since the building itself didn't seem designed for this sort of thing (only way up was an elevator, had to walk through the casino floor to go outside) and while most people were wearing masks inside for some reason they were still allowed to smoke???? That's honestly kinda mind-boggling with a respiratory bug going around.
