Do you have something you wish to discuss past insulting people?

Florida as me and Rock both have pointed out has closed a lot of test sites due to the tropical storm. This is going to cause the backlog to clear out. If the virus is not dipping, the positivity rate should skyrocket when they open back up.

There is more than 2 people in this topic! You can discuss whatever you want to discuss about the virus.

A study came out today that said children have heavy virus loads in their cases. However, transmission rate was not studied. The mainstream thinking right now is that asymptomatics don't spread the disease very easily because they lack symptoms to spread it. Which is why people think children are a "virus stopper" because they are all pretty much asymptomatic

The idea of asymptomatics not spreading the virus hasn't made much sense to me. From what we know, the entire reason why the virus spread so quickly seems to be driven by the fact that they do spread it.

I could maybe buy into the idea that there's some sort of better immune response in children that helps prevent its spread, but I doubt it's as simple as them being asymptomatic and thus not spreading it.

The asymptomatic spread idea is the same as the mask being a strong deterrent idea. That spread of droplets can cause the spread. With asymptomatics breathing and talking are the main mode of transmission which can top out at 6 feet but is on average much, much lower. Where as a sneeze can go 18 feet and 12 feet for a cough. Also the amount expelled is less with regular breathing and talking than in a mass discharge in a sneeze or cough. That for asymptomatics you would have to be much, much closer.

Granted little kids can cough and sneeze for other reasons still, so it is not an exact science. However, while one study says they transmit the same, others say transmission is reduced with people living in the same house not even getting it from an asymptomatic (though of course, there is a possible that they were immune and it was unknown).

However, there is reason to believe transmission is much less likely for asymptomatics just from practical reasons.

The six feet rule was intended as a minimum distance as far as I'm aware, not something an upper limit for how far droplets/virus can spread. With longer exposure time and conditions that are favorable to the virus (indoor recirculated air), you'd still get spread.

Also kids are absolutely not going to maintain six feet of distance.

Like I mentioned, the virus wouldn't have spread so quickly if it were as simple as asymptomatics not spreading the virus very easily.

This is incorrect. It was a distance picked upon spread of breathing and talking spread. That said, many countries are shorter than 6 feet on their social distancing guidelines.

we already did this whole thing like a few days ago

the point is you dont necessarily know if youre healthy because people get the virus and are asymptomatic but can still transfer the virus.
obviously if you dont actually have the virus its not keeping you from spreading the virus since you cant spread something you dont have

and the video is from March when barely anyone had gotten the virus here

Coming back to this, I'm fairly certain that studies after these guidelines were implemented showed that spread was possible beyond six feet. I don't really have time time to wade through articles about this right now to confirm, but that has been my understanding.

Exposure time and viral load are a factor if spread is reduced but not eliminated beyond six feet, especially if severity correlates with viral load in the way some people believe.

There is always a chance to get infected from someone no matter how far away you are. There are a lot of factors to consider, including wind/air movement and walking into an area previously occupied by a person.

While there is little doubt that you are less likely to get infected standing six feet away vs. being right in their face, as someone that's been in the safety discussion about other things the reason why 6 feet was chosen as oppose to 5 or 7 feet could be as simple as someone liking that number and using that for their testing.

It doesn't matter if studies after this said it was further. That doesn't change the fact that it is why they chose that distance then.

What...are you arguing? You originally said that spread "tops out at six feet" for breathing/talking, and I was saying that wasn't the case as far as I'm aware. Now you're saying it doesn't matter?

I said they chose 6 feet because that is the distance they said breathing and talking couldn't transmit UP to. That coughing was UP to 18 feet. And sneezing was UP to 24 feet.

You said well a new study said that may be further! A new study is extraneous to why they chose that distance.

OK, I see your confusion here. I'm talking about your original comment about spread topping out at six feet for breathing/talking, which I'm saying is incorrect.

You're talking about the original intent behind the six feet rule, which...seems less relevant to the discussion of asymptomatic spread. But I'm fairly certain that no one believed it "topped out" at six feet even back then-- only that it was a good hard and fast rule for reducing spread.

While I do think the protest was relatively dumb in Belgium, it would be a bit hypocritical to say that protest would be spreading the virus in comparison to other political protests of the sorts.

Personally, none of them should be protesting due to pandemic concerns.

That said, to be a hypocrite myself.

I went to a wedding yesterday. It was supposed to be outside to accommodate the PA gathering mandates of 25 inside or 200 outside or whatever.

It was moved to inside due to rain. And, basically every mandate in PA regarding the virus was hella broken by that venue and the wedding.

I was surprised how much the venue broke the rules.
