Wanglicious 04/01/20 2:15:01 PM #302:	as of September 2019, China has 1.6 billion subscriptions. yes, more phones than people. they also claim to have 98% of people with them. don't know the specifics and i'm sure there's lying being done on both numbers, but it's safe to say the overwhelming number have 'em and when we're talking data collection and surveillance, well... it's china, that's what they do. like as of last month, they released an app showing your status. you literally can't travel or shop without your phone saying you're clear. this isn't rolled out everywhere yet but it's got hundreds of cities already under its belt. the basic numbers go... between November 2019 and March 2020, 21 million cells and 840,000 landlines were disconnected. last year, they gained subscribers. significant drops are consistent with info released by major companies. officially, it's all associated to the quarantine - that when businsesses shut down their landlines went and so did spare mobile numbers. both claims are likely true (especially landline) to a point but there's still a big question of "where else did this go?" since even if you assume 1% is related to somebody dying from corona, it's going to be 210,000. How would single payer fix the fact that we don't have enough tests, and enough basic medical supplies/ventilators? It also doesn't fix the issue with rural hospitals and revenue, it hurts that. Doctors and hospitals frequently lose money on Medicare patients because the reimbursement rates are so low. Taking away the reimbursement rates from insurers takes away their revenue stream. Private practice doctors and smaller hospitals can't keep their doors open in that case, and when they're shut down they can't help anybody. A "consistent funding stream that doesn't rely on for-profit insurers" means nothing when the hospital is losing money every time somebody walks in the door, because medicare doesn't pay them enough. The only thing that M4A would help is that it would give everybody coverage right now, which is definitely needed since so many people are out of work, but it wouldn't magically fix everything like you seem to think it would. While I can't say for sure that they're not all lying and trying to get out of being investigated for insurance fraud, I've heard the same story enough times where I personally don't think that the people who handle billing for doctors and hospitals all over the country have agreed to tell insurers the same thing. As I've said before, I have no problem losing my job for the sake of a singer payer system in this country, but it has to be one that I feel will work. If I felt it would I'd be rooting for it against my own best interests. Based on my personal experience in the industry though, I don't feel M4A is the way to do it. You're just eliminating the safety net that those offices get from private insurance. My friend at the clinic the next town over does ultrasounds and she's said countless times that they lose money on every Medicare patient they see, and that they rely on private insurance reimbursements to stay open. Some people get real nasty about it, but... When you get delivery you are tipping the driver for his service and not the staff. When you get eat in, you are tipping the waitress for her service, not the staff. When you eat fast food, you aren't tipping the staff. So, why would you tip the staff because you drove and picked up food from them? Lol. A lot of people are just intimidated by those receipts that have a tip line, not realizing it is because it's the same receipts for dine in customers lol. And the worst part is, you have no idea what that tip is even going to when you do it for pick up. Like a bar, sure the bartender is getting it (even if they didn't cook your food at all most likely). At a Denny's or such?
