There are countries with both single payer and private insurance whose systems are handling this both well and badly. The primary problems (resource constraints, testing/tracking, containment strategies) don't have a huge overlap with a country's payment system (there is some, but if you think single payer would have fixed this you're extremely mistaken).

I've been consistently tipping, but having to pay close to 20 bucks for something after fees and top that I would normally get for a little over 10 is definitely a disincentive for getting delivery!

I wouldn't use a service like Uber eats or shit if it was between that and starving.

1. I would rather help a local business during this time.

2. The cost of that is ridiculous. At that point, I would just drive there.

at least around here, Uber eats has been doing free delivery on local restaurants so its not so bad

Ive only done pick-up once since this all started and I instinctively didnt tip, but felt bad afterward like maybe I should have. I feel like the people working these places now deserve it as hazard pay.

After working at one of those "fast casual" places as a cashier, I tip in these situations regardless. They are still the people answering phones or online to take and organize orders. And spoilers: the tip you're giving "directly" to the wait staff is probably being split with the cashiers (and maybe even the chefs) anyways unless you hand them cash and they just pocket it.

Yeah, this. All of the local restaurants by me have partnered with uber/seamless/whatever, so that's the best way to support them (and to get booze delivered!).

And yes, you should be giving them all fat tips.

tipping for these delivery apps is pretty bizarre to me to be honest

i'm placing an order for for some food for a total. then it tacks on a delivery charge. then i also have 15% on my bill as a tip. but.... that just doubles up the delivery charge usually.

The delivery charge should include what the delivery drivers get paid imo.

Thats why Ive done it since the shut down started! They arent getting paid nearly enough for working when everyone else is forced inside. Ive been tipping drivers more than I used to as well.

Before though, I would:
1) Put the order through online
2) Drive to the place
3) Carry the food out myself

All theyd do is bring the food from the waiting area to the counter. I dont know why Id tip for that!

I've also worked delivery and the delivery charge is usually to cover gas fees and administrative costs by the company taking online orders, which is all separate from a tip for service. The delivery driver is NOT getting all the money from the delivery fee, I'd be surprised if they even got half.
