Travis Bickle (Taxi Driver)
Travis Bickle (Taxi Driver)
Taxi Driver is a riveting, almost emotionally-draining, film. I, for one, immensely respect every part of the movie and every aspect of acting and directing that bolsters this script to a timeless elite tier of greats. But, if I'm to be honest, I don't particularly like the character of Travis Bickle. I don't give him many thoughts. When I think of Taxi Driver, I think of this objectively great film that doesn't resonate within me. I recognize and understand what aspects of the character make him great - objectively, he is - but, personally, I don't care as much as others, and in some ways, that makes me like the character less. Overpopularity often breeds contempt in me.

Desmond Hume (LOST)
Desmond Hume (LOST)
From the moment he first laced up his running shoes, Desmond proved to me to be a nuanced story of wrestling with responsibility. It took the fate of the world to tether Desmond to the demands of the world around him, and after years of running away from life, he suddenly had reason to run towards it. In my mind, the love of Penny and Desmond is the most beautiful on LOST. There's something transcendent in their conversation during The Constant, a time-crossed tale of starcrossed lovers, and their season 4 reunion really pulls at my heartstrings. Ultimately, Desmond is one of the best characters on a show full of best characters.

Kylo Ren (Star Wars)
Kylo Ren (Star Wars)
Kylo Ren has his defenders - and that is deservedly so. Many people find it easy to separate the writing from the characters in Star Wars, or to selectively canonize personalities in their own minds. As for me, I was never enamored with the greasy, pale face of Kylo Ren until his conversation with Han in Episode IX. That single moment ended up being the only one that captured the essence of something spectacular. Prior to that point, I found Ren to be a rudderless piece yanked around by a studio and two directors as the trilogy began to spiral out of control, and after that scene, the people at LucasFilm saw fit to begin pulling the character in every conceivably direction in the final act of the film once more. But for one brief moment, I saw something brililant in Ren.

Harry Potter
Harry Potter (Harry Potter)
A story like Rowling's long-running narrative on the legacy of Voldemort requires a firm foundation with a character like Harry Potter. But Harry Potter himself is hard to classify as a particularly exciting star. This, I think, goes to a lack of exploration in the darkness within Potter's own soul. Touched and tainted by a piece of Voldemort, there are occasional hints at the potentiality for Harry to get in contact with the evil within himself, but I think by and large, the family-film nature of the books makes it impossible to dig too deeply. And maybe you would be sacrificing the inherent heroic purity of the character by doing so. But, ultimately, Harry is a safe protagonist, lacking danger, mired in the tradition of fantasy stars. I guess, you know, that's okay.

Impa (Legend of Zelda, if you want something specific, just the BotW appearance)
Impa (Legend of Zelda)
From the fat matron to the spry ninja to the ancient, withered gnome, Impa has gone through a host of redesigns. I have to subtract points for all of them except that sleek Sheikah, a version of the character that displays a certain air of coolness in the face of the inky-black evil of Ganondorf. As someone who has logged hundreds of hours in both Hyrule Warriors and its latest Switch edition, I imagine that my mind fills in gaps in the character which exist, but I see within Impa the capacity to provide tutelage to Zelda both with wisdom in governing and in fighting, making her a valuable asset with a clear definition of duty.

Bean (Ender's Game)
Have I ever mentioned that I hate children? Blame Ender and his even more irritating sister. But don't blame Bean, a character that does his best and is forced to live in, well, you know. Bean is twice the man (although half the size) of his more well-known counterpart, and that means he deserves better.

Given that I've watched two episodes of Rick and Morty, disliking them both, I doubt I will ever return to the show. It's quite loud and obnoxious, and the art style looks equivalent to the quality of work you find on a bathroom stall door. This character is no exception, an extremely unpleasant scribble mishmashed with a hodgepodge of boring metallic pieces that I imagine mean something to you, but mean nothing to me.

VECTOR (Resident Evil)
The problem with Resident Evil is that the series remains weighed down by bad writing and worse voice acting. Rarely does a character rise above the preponderance of low-rent Kojima storytelling quality, and these characters generally speak less than the rest. VECTOR is able to surpass the bounds of Resident Evil by having a very unique modus operandi that at least brings new perspective to the more ardent players of the series. This is not to say that Resident Evil is by any means a bad series, just that it is very rare that the dialogue is more than hokey and a character can benefit from said hokeyness by not taking part in it.

A brilliant, Machiavellian piece of why Deep Space Nine succeeded in creating an entirely new form of narrative for Star Trek, Garak is a classic example of the deceptive appearances so necessary in creating great skulduggery in an extended series. The layers one can peel back, both narratively and ethically, from Garak prove that even a secondary supporting star can provide a profound amount of depth to a series.

Voiced by the incomparable Matt Ryan, Edward Kenway's story is one of doing right, in the end. Making good on all of the failed promises pushed to the side for the fleeting hope of adventure and glory, not to mention lining one's pockets with enough to feed and clothe a family for a lifetime. But lost somewhere in that dream was the weight of responsibilities that would leave the world hanging in the balance. Kenway sacrifices his future for those responsibilities, and in a way, turns piracy into an evolution, an extension, of the Assassin's titular creed. It's a really perfect way to begin the second chapter of the series.

Very interesting take on VECTOR, I can't say I disagree even if RE is my favorite series and I still love the lore regardless. But then, story isn't really the primary reason I love the series anyway.
Roman Sionis is the yuppie Messiah, a character designed to run the cult of business ethics gone primal. For me, Black Mask is always on the cusp of both reaching the peak of the corporate world and seating himself as a new age philosophy guru. Sionis' philosophies focus primarily on identity, naturally, but his real motivations are worldly, diving deeply into the ways one can take advantage of the yearning hopes of the masses to sate a greedy hunger. Black Mask's greatest hope is to convince you that he has all the answers, and fleece you while doing it.

Of course, oftentimes he's no more than a common thug with more aid at his disposal than a simple mafiaso, but when that isn't the case, he can be quite interesting.

Morte (Planescape: Torment)
Morte consistently dirties up the story of Planescape: Torment, serving as a perfect mouthpiece for the somewhat stoic Nameless One throughout his journey. Morte keeps the story grounded by focusing on the tangible, simple aspects of the story while simultaneously dragging the setting into a bizarre, topsy-turvy horror world of disembodied undead heads. It's a difficult balance.

Lincoln Osiris
Lincoln Osiris is boring. Now, if you want to talk about Kirk Lazarus, I'm all for it. But Lincoln Osiris himself has what? Three lines at the start of Tropic Thunder?

Gary King (The World's End)
Both simultaneously cool and uncool, my argument is that Gary King is the end result of a Dwight Schrute's life if Dwight was raised in a household with electricity and public schooling.

Gaston (Beauty and the Beast)
Gaston's greatest moments are his darkest ones; LeFou best highlights Gaston's comedic qualities, and that's a damning indicator of how bad Disney is at presenting an overly masculine character on their own merits. When Gaston turns into a jealous and greedy manipulator of a city, that's where the real depth comes. The wild-eyed rabble-rousing of Gaston reminds me of the Twitter accounts that inspired the marches in Charlottesville.

All-Might (My Hero Acadamia)
Having never watched this show, I find the hairstyle absolutely horrendous, and my gut reaction is that this is some form of skewering superheroes, which generally leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

Benoit Blanc (Knives Out)

dont know if you have seen that movie but it seems up your alley
Daniel Craig's less flamboyant version of Truman Capote is enjoyable enough, but I was always waiting for some sort of grander reveal full of panache that would really endear him with me. It never came.

Poochie (Yoshi)
Ugly and uninteresting. I cannot think of a single interesting moment from Poochie, but that's to be expected from these sorts of "ME LIEK DESIGN" nominations.
