The rules remain constant as always: Name a character, and I will provide a rating on a scale of 1 to 100. Be forewarned that, if you think I am unaware of a character, you will have to provide a picture to get a rating, or I will leave said character unrated.

This time, I'm thinking about getting a little technical and keeping track of a user's average character rating, so maybe that will be fun!

As always, this is just a time-filler project, so there may be long gaps between nominations, so keep that in mind. And please, once I've rated your nomination, feel free to nominate again!

Having never played the game, I can only rate based off of the design here, and that design is fairly ugly and disinteresting. It hearkens back to the sort of Cartoon Network characters that are designed to be boisterous but ultimately tame villains that lack any teeth and mostly are played for laughs. Aesthetically, not my thing. But again, all based on appearance here.

Solid Snake
Solid Snake (Metal Gear)
The further and further removed I get from the Metal Gear series' initial release, the more I realize how broad and overwrought the series is. This sort of 80s action film writing cloaked in a 90s video game science fiction rhetoric, however, only enhances the innate charisma of Solid Snake. Sometimes, characters can be relatively two-dimensional but cloaked in smoke and mirrors, narrative twists and swerves, that disguise the weaknesses and make the character appear compelling. Great serialized storytelling can help a character avoid overstaying their welcome and becoming stale. Snake never did become stale thanks to the bizarre eccentricities of Kojima's creative prowess, and I enjoy the character to this day.

Shushu (One Piece)
On paper, this character is actually wholly unremarkable aside from some of the worst fake barking an animated dog has ever uttered. Yet, somehow, I found Shushu to be slightly endearing despite bad voice acting and a brief story that disappeared after two or three episodes without any lingering consequence. The nature of One Piece demands that character with fewer appearances become more forgettable, but I've developed a kinship with Shushu thanks to a personal inside joke with a friend, and that allows Shushu to climb out of the purely apathetic hole in which he should be placed.

Dante
Dante (Devil May Cry)
When I was young, I truly was enamored with the innate coolness embodied in Dante. But, over time, the voice acting, the behavior, the mannerisms... they've begun to strike me as remnants of the 2000s, an era where Sugar Ray's music didn't come across as try-hard, but rather simply served as anthem to an era. Dante is too cool for all of us, and in a way, he's too cool for his series. Water runs off a duck's back sometimes, and it caused a childhood icon to lose some of his luster.

Darth Vader
Darth Vader, for me, has never been a particularly compelling villain. I do find his turn at the end of Return of the Jedi to be fascinating, and in terms of design, his sleek, polished exterior pulls like a black hole on the viewer, an indescribable mass of presence on the cinema screen. But Vader's origin story proved to be one that destroyed the mystique of the character. Much in the way that giving personal motivation to the Joker lessens his role as a force of comic book nature, Vader loses that timeless quality when he's anchored around the neck by this intensely mundane person with intensely mundane problems. The fact that the Jedi can't see the Mommy Problem that exists in the heart of Anakin Skywalker really diminishes their wisdom, and the rise of Vader really only lands with me in the scenes featuring Palpatine. Still, when I can step away from Anakin, I enjoy the character.

While it may have come out a few years ago, I remain someone who has not played past IX in the DQ series, and I'm sure that's to my own loss. Dragon Quest just hasn't really maintained its importance in my play catalog as of late. What I'm seeing in the pictures on Google images is a trendsetter version of Groose. Maybe a little bombastic but also a little charming. Otherwise, I have no idea if that's even close.

Handsome Jack
Handsome Jack (Borderlands)
The two hundred play hours I have between Borderlands 2 and Pre-Sequel are punctuated by the incessant insults of Handsome Jack, and contained in these nuggets of audio is a character so ridiculously awful that I cannot help but love him. The insanity attached to the comedic science fiction world of Pandora is exactly my kind of speed, and Jack is that mix of a good comic book villain and a strong streak of very real cruelty rolled into one stylish package. The design of Borderlands has always appealed to me, and the way that the story is melded perfectly with a game that puts a premium on action makes the story never slow down. Instead, concentrated bursts of personality are delivered right in the middle of the action, and I love how Borderlands can create a compelling, almost tragic, villain while still pushing the comedic envelope whenever it can.

After the previous DMC game, I personally felt no urgency in rushing out to play another game in the series, although I suspect I will pick up DMC5 in a sale for some lowball price in the next year or so. I am curious about the new entry in the series, and the design work seems pretty spectacular overall. V's design doesn't really jump out to me too much as particularly unique or exciting, but there could be some great personality work there of which I'm, of course, unaware.

For me, Nathan Drake is a fairly overrated character. I once saw Nathan Fillion perform on screen, years before the first Uncharted game, and it was better. So I'm not sure why I should care as much about his pixelated counterpart. I joke (kind of), but I will be honest - Nathan Drake is #544 in the mold of Aw Shucks Swashbuckler, a mix of homespun humility and globetrotting devil may care attitude that, honestly, feels old as hell nowadays. I respect that he came 544th and not 5444th, I guess, but I came late to the Uncharted party (after 2 had been out for a couple years), and I find the hype likely overestimated my interest in the game and its characters.

In terms of pure ratio of screentime to punchline, Creed Bratton is the Office MVP, chock full of some of the most bizarre and twisted nuggets of pure insanity that the show can muster. Creed's role within the show is to give it texture and he succeeds admirably. Blurring a real life pseudocelebrity into the background player that becomes one of the most identifiable in TV history, Bratton brings so many kinds of stability into question. How does Dunder Mufflin employ someone so egregiously unqualified for their post? How come society itself seems to reward individuals with long, undeserved tenures? How long do we go without questioning strange behavior?

Sawyer began his six-season run as an enigma, developed into a flawed antihero, and eventually blossomed into a human being deserving of redemption. Conquering the monumental task of overcoming a man who had colored his life and set him on a path to a dark destiny, Sawyer earns his happy ending despite one of the darkest killings in the series coming at his hands. Yet, even in murder, LOST finds a way to give a sense of catharsis and closure, almost allowing the viewers to believe that it was a righteous kill. In between all of those deeper moments are a host of hilarious, small, intimate scenes that only serve to endear Sawyer to me and the rest of the world.

Adam Strange (DC Comics)
Few people are aware that, for a brief period of time before 2010, Leonardo DiCaprio was attached to star in an Adam Strange film. The story of Adam Strange is utterly romantic and wonderful - whisked accidentally to another world, Adam Strange saves the people of Rann and finds love in the heart of Alanna, only to be returned by the same beam which delivered him without remorse or warning. Now, Adam must spend his life searching out Zeta Beams, if only to have brief stints of happiness in the arms of the woman he loves. It's a phenomenally bittersweet story, one buttressed by the pulpy science fiction adventure and exploration that always fills my mind with the impossibilities of other worlds and futuristic technology that might as well be magic to the generations that came before us. Adam Strange's design is sleek and futuristic, and his attitude is positive even in the face of the gargantuan adversities that lay in front of him.

In the vein of a lot of that era's video game stars, Crash Bandicoot is a low rent Looney Tune, providing all of the subtlety of a fart and all of the comedy of one as well. C+ platformers and passable racers punctuate his dull career from start to finish, a lifetime of garish set designs that look like they came from the in-house dropouts of Rareware. Ultimately, the design is ugly and the character is flimsy and noisy.

I have very little to no familiarity with almost all anime. It's just a genre with which I've never been captivated. In fact, I really only find it enjoyable when I watch with someone else. Most of the time, this comes from the strange pacing of those shows, including the weird pauses between lines. Oftentimes, it's as if characters are incapable of changing a facial expression while also talking. One, then the other. In any event, this design seems like a militant child, something that I would likely not like by-and-large. Children belong to the Milford Academy.

As a child, I didn't watch Sesame Street, but I don't think that's a negative. I personally preferred to read whenever I could and only developed an unhealthy fixation with television in late high school. With that said, it is probably understandable that I don't experience the pangs of nostalgia that would color the lenses of my critical glasses. I can see why a child might enjoy Oscar the Grouch, and I respect what Oscar the Grouch can be used for in the teaching of young people, but I also one-note characters - especially overly negative ones. And I don't like puppets.

John Wick (John Wick)
It's fair to say that John Wick is not some sort of literary icon, bursting with hidden complexities, but as an action hero, you cannot go wrong. The motivation is intimate and impactful, something everyone can understand and sympathize with, if not empathize. His unbridled rage is channeled in cold, calculating brutality, pinpointing his targets of anger carefully. A vigilante he is not, but his tactics are not villainous. They are heroic in a world of hopelessness and devoid of real morality. This makes John Wick a hero. What makes him a great character is the length directors can go to give him artistic flair, to bedeck him in the trappings of the beauty of violence presented in just the right way, and that makes me a fan.

My formative comic book years came in 2002 and 2003, a time when I could pick up all of Helena's early career moves in volume form and experience drawn out serialized stories as single tomes. For me, Helena is a beautiful, unhinged demon that menaces Gotham City in a different way than someone like Catwoman. She's more dangerous, first of all. She bays for blood, and unlike Batman, she sees her war as one against people. Batman's war is one for people. A foil in many respects, Batman has restraint that Huntress lacks the compunction to find. Instead, she aggressively breaks every rule in the Batbook and then fails to understand why that ruins her connections to Batman. The fact that she was fired from the Justice League really speaks volumes for her inability to have self-control. A madwoman. A zealot.

Sly comes from that generation after Crash Bandicoot where the writing starts to improve in children's games and we get some polish to personalities. Sly's design draws you into his burglar ways, and who doesn't enjoy a good heist? Alas, however, the heists with Sly aren't good, but merely average, and after finishing any Sly game, he sinks into the forgettable middle ground of video game history. In fact, that is why I so enjoy his relationship with his father. Henry and Indy are so wonderfully alike and yet, the occasional monomania both can display drove a wedge between them at a young age. Perhaps, as a young man, we would have seen Henry Jones Sr. as a swashbuckling star like his son became decades later. And yet, in his only appearance, Henry comes across as cantankerous and set in his ways. Much in the way Indiana becomes when he first encounters his own son.

I detest this form of heel microphone work in wrestling - a character in a scripted drama is not reliant on constantly belittling sports teams or the intelligence of large swathes of a populous in order to achieve that negative connection between viewer and character. While I found the story of MJF's turn against Cody Rhodes to be very well-done, I've since walked away from his every promo feeling that the character is hollow, stalling for time. He lacks what makes a good villain a good villain.
