Gomenasai, my name is Ken-Sama.

I'm a 27 year old American Otaku (Anime fan for you gaijins). I draw Anime and Manga on my tablet, and spend my days perfecting my art and playing superior Japanese games. (Disgaea, Final Fantasy, Persona series)

I train with my Katana every day, this superior weapon can cut clean through steel because it is folded over a thousand times, and is vastly superior to any other weapon on earth. I earned my sword license two years ago, and I have been getting better every day.

I speak Japanese fluently, both Kanji and the Osaka dialect, and I write fluently as well. I know everything about Japanese history and their bushido code, which I follow 100%

When I get my Japanese visa, I am moving to Tokyo to attend a prestigious High School to learn more about their magnificent culture. I hope I can become an animator for Studio Ghibli or a game designer!

I own several kimonos, which I wear around town. I want to get used to wearing them before I move to Japan, so I can fit in easier. I bow to my elders and seniors and speak Japanese as often as I can, but rarely does anyone manage to respond.

Wish me luck in Japan!

Well maybe the most accurate way to put it is that black people aren't treated all that differently from other foreigners.

They do certainly act differently than they do with Japanese people though.

You're definitely not going to get things like police brutality, people assuming you're a thief, or taxi cabs refusing to stop for you.

But you might experience people being intimidated by you. Patronizing attitudes are common, and they love to tell you positive stereotypes that they have about whatever ethnicity or nationality you are.

The ugliest, most hateful kinds of bigotry are usually reserved for other east Asians actually. Koreans, Chinese, and Vietnamese. You have to be from those countries though. If your parents or ancestors are from one of these countries but you were born in the USA, they'll just see you as another American.

I would live in Japan if I could :<

I miss how polite (or at the very least not super inconsiderate) the people are there. No one is Facetiming on the bus (or just talking super loud in general), playing music so loud it can be heard 20 feet away, tossing litter wherever, smoking in non-smoking areas, etc. And the convenience stores there are awesome.

...Also, heated toilet seats, even at the mall. Those rule lol. It's so clean there. Whereas I saw a homeless lazy laughing maniacally while smearing her (I mean hopefully it was hers) shit on the bus stop seat here. So yeah, I never sit down at bus stops. Ever.

It's my favorite part of living here. There is racism of course. It's most annoying when it comes to finding a place to live (though speaking Japanese will help you), but usually it is just microaggressions and I honestly don't care about those at all. In the US the lack of politeness means people are just rude right to your face. Here they just say their vile thoughts behind your back or online, which is fine by me, because I get to live my life and not worry about it. I don't have to worry about being robbed or assaulted.

And for my personal situation academia in the US has become so awful it's just not worth it. No guaranteed jobs, students having more power in grade disputes than the actual instructor. Constantly worrying about someone taking something you say out of context to end your contract (and effectively career). It's just a total joke. I would never go back to that. 2 years as a lecturer convinced me of that.

There are things I miss though. Mostly people and certain foods.

Depends on if you want a real job or if you want to waste a few years of your life barely making ends meet on some nowhere English teaching job. If you want a real job you better get fluent or at least pass the JLPT N1 (not that hard really) and/or have an advanced degree in a relevant field. Japan has a labor shortage yes, but most of it is low level labor. You don't want to work at 7-11 or a farm field.

Depends on what you want to do. But the Diet has elected members of Western descent before. The racism aspect of this is overblown (ethnically Chinese Renho is extremely powerful within what was once the second largest party, she even led it prior to the disintegration of the DPJ). If you become a Japanese citizen and have the qualifications you can get into government work. But becoming a citizen is no small task.
