I miss how polite (or at the very least not super inconsiderate) the people are there. No one is Facetiming on the bus (or just talking super loud in general), playing music so loud it can be heard 20 feet away, tossing litter wherever, smoking in non-smoking areas, etc. And the convenience stores there are awesome.

It's my favorite part of living here. There is racism of course. It's most annoying when it comes to finding a place to live (though speaking Japanese will help you), but usually it is just microaggressions and I honestly don't care about those at all. In the US the lack of politeness means people are just rude right to your face. Here they just say their vile thoughts behind your back or online, which is fine by me, because I get to live my life and not worry about it. I don't have to worry about being robbed or assaulted.

And for my personal situation academia in the US has become so awful it's just not worth it. No guaranteed jobs, students having more power in grade disputes than the actual instructor. Constantly worrying about someone taking something you say out of context to end your contract (and effectively career). It's just a total joke. I would never go back to that. 2 years as a lecturer convinced me of that.
