I lived in Japan for seven years from 2012 to 2019. Will be moving back there this March. After living there for so long, I thought I wouldn't mind returning to the US for a year, but I definitely do miss Japan.

So like, if you're not fluent in Japanese, what's the best way to get along with locals? Should I just ask until I get someone who speaks English? Should I attempt to speak to them, but lean on Google translate if I don't think I'll be able to hold the conversation? Or should I just avoid speaking to anyone and just rely on all the tablets and automated shit they have for foreigners?
