Free travel expenses for the challenge, (hotel and flight only) only condition is you have to hit all 82 games (plus playoffs if they make it) for your favorite NHL team, wearing their Jersey to each game. You miss one game, for what ever reason you dont get the money and must make your way back home out of pocket.

Do you do it?

I would quickly choose a favorite team and say yes.

Even if it takes a whole day to watch each game (no clue how long they last), that is 82 days for $1,000,000 bucks.

Also free travel AND hotels during all that time, which considering that is (I'm guessing) a new game ever 3-4 days....means you don't need to pay rent that year, you'll be living in hotels (and really nice ones cause they are paid for muahahha).

Also most of them offer free food, but who cares, you can spoil yourself and still invest most of that million+

Which means it's pure interest for the first year, probably netting you 100k+

Which is more then enough to carry your for a few years after that while your 1mill continues to accrue interest, even at 10% that is almost 1.5mill by the end of 3 years.

Which is plenty to retire on comfortably (at 10% a year that is $150k a year after that).

So yeup, I don't like watchign sports, but I'd watch paint dry for that much, and nothing says you can't bring a book/electronic device to the games lol.

Cancelled game you arent penalized, as they are rescheduled for later in the year, but missing the game for any other reason you are screwed.

Games are about 2 and half hours each, if no OT. (3 20 minute persoids, but with intermission, it gets to 2 hours and 30 minutes)
Some games are back to back, other a few day break. Its 41 home games and 41 away games.

Fuck no.

82 games basically means I'm effectively sacrificing six months of my life, constantly in airports (it'd take about 50 flights - in a lot of cases one every two days) and strange hotel rooms (again, something like 50 different hotels, spending maybe a couple nights in each before having to check out again). That's a LOT of hassle. And that's just if my team doesn't make the playoffs. If they do, that's potentially an extra two months and a bunch more flights/hotels.

On top of which, it becomes even more of a hassle because my passport is long since expired, but I'd have to renew it to attend the Canadian games (unless I flew to the nearest US city on the border and then drove into Canada for every Canadian game, which is even more of a BS scenario).

Even worse, if even ONE thing goes wrong (even if it's entirely beyond my control) that causes me to miss a single game, then the entire process up to that point was a massive worthless waste of my time.

It also doesn't help that my team isn't my local team (because I don't like my local team and never have), so even during stretches where they're playing home games, I'm still going to be on the road, because -I- won't BE home. I'll be half a continent away from my entire life, for half a year or more.

If I was passionate about hockey it might be more worth it, but I barely give a shit and haven't for nearly 15 years at this point (I've mentioned in the past that I was really into hockey in college, but the 2004 lockout in killed every ounce of interest I ever had). So you'd have to pay me a hell of a lot more than $1,000,000 before I'd even consider doing it.

hockey fans that don't stay close: i don't know

the home games won't be an issue if you live close. the away games may be an issue since you'd have to get acclimated to frequent travel like the athletes have to. is the million before or after taxes? :P

The major hitch I could foresee in this scenario would be that hockey is a primarily winter sport and with that comes unexpected travel delays, particularly to the furthest north cities. I could see a bad storm leaving you stuck. Edmonton, Calgary, Vancouver, Winnipeg, Ottawa, Buffalo...etc are risky bets.

I'd say hockey players probably suffer fewer injuries than NBA players. The trick is that injuries in the NHL will generally be more severe by nature, so they're more visible/obvious/memorable.

I mean yes and no to the taxing part. There's not nearly as much contact as say, American Football or Rugby, the periods are 3x20 without nearly as much stop and go, and players rotate in and out of play fairly often. That's not to say hockey is without pain and injuries, you are doing up to 20mph at points with what amounts to knife blades on your feet, but the padding does absorb a good deal of the incidental contact, and when you go down, unless it's a body pile you tend to slide rather than just come to an abrupt thud like you would on AstroTurf.

I might even go so far as to say that basketball might be harder on the body, or at least the joints with the quick changes of direction, whereas hockey is more...arcing. momentum swings instead of stop and reverse type moves. Not a lot of jumping in hockey either for obvious reasons.

If I didn't love my job I'd do it in a heartbeat. If I could take a leave of absence, why not. It's not even a year; reg season is like, 5 months?

Even if you can't miss a game, I'm guessing as long as you're there before the 3rd period ends it counts. Plus half of the games would be in my city, so it's not like I'll always be on the road. As a kicker, my team hasn't done well in the playoffs (if they even make it) so the post-season obligations would be pretty short too.

Well, if you averaged $100 per ticket, that would be about $10k, even if they made it to the Stanley Cup Finals. I'm sure if you took this on and you contacted the team, telling them you were planning on being a superfan and going to EVERY game, they'd probably hook you up with a deal for all their away games in addition to normal season tickets.

BTW, who thought it was a good idea to stop including nested quotes?

You guys worried about food, the more expensive (and even some not that expensive) hotels provide at least breakfast and many have buffets/shrimp etc as well.

Heck one in Lynnwood Wa when my uncle visited had both free breakfast (Waffles/eggs/bacon/sausage/donuts/bagels etc etc), but also had an evening meal (ish).

That awesomist thing was not only could you get different foods (usually 2 choices) for the evening meal (and it was all you could eat) they ALSO had all you could drink beer and win (3 types of beer, 2 types of wine).

Wish I could remember the name of that hotel. It wasn't that expensive though.

The really expensive ones though often have plenty of food whenever you want it (outside of room service etc) so it wouldn't be a problem if you planned where you would stay carefully.

10% is what you can expect. 12% is a myth. That 10% comes 7% real after inflation. That 7% become a 4% withdrawal rate factoring in the downs of the stock market. But basically it lets you live on 40k a year (and then 15% tax on that), and if you live on less then it'll grow.

Oh, that also assumes you aren't taxed on the million. If you're taxed you're getting closer to 650k, meaning 4% withdrawal is a bit under 30k safe withdrawal rate.

Given that I don't pay attention to hockey and could therefore define my "favourite" team as the one that requires the least travel, this would probably be doable without having to take the full time off work. That said, if flights being cancelled costs me the prize, I don't think it'd be a worthwhile gamble. Flying in Canada in the winter is risky business. Flights get cancelled all the time, and with only a day or two to spare between some games, that could very easily be the end of it.

If flight cancellations (and other such uncontrollable travel interruptions) don't count against me, then I'd do it, otherwise, not so much.

This was my major issue. I live in the Hudson Valley in NY, so if I just followed the Rangers, all the home games are easy-peasy. Jump the river to Beacon and I have a train straight into Grand Central and from there MSG is a short hop. Given the geography of New England and a majority of NHL teams clustered in major cities of the Northeast, at least a third of the away games are more or less driveable if I planned ahead. Another third are going to be relatively routine and safe flights. However, this brings us to that last third of the away games which would be a total crapshoot. Minnesota and several Canadian arenas would come down to pure luck depending on what the weather was doing. Buffalo is also very close, certainly close enough to drive to but they get lake effect snow 4 feet at a time with frightening regularity.

I figure about 60 or so of those games are going to be in the bag before I even take the bet, but those remaining 20ish could get super sketchy.

It's easier to imagine when you're an actual adult, with actual adult responsibilities, obligations, and own property/have a high paying job, or have family that depend on you.

It's a lot easier to commit to when you're borderline homeless and have nothing holding you down to one spot for any length of time.

Sort of similar to how I wish the person posting links could make the decision as to whether or not they should be shown as embedded, as opposed to the person viewing them. The site's coding is absolute shit, so it breaks any YouTube link with a time code. In cases like that it would be much better if the poster could disable other people from seeing it embedded and force them to click out.

I'm long since used to this site doing every single thing it tries to add in the worst possible way, though, so it's just sort of a learned helplessness situation in general.
