Superbeat Xonic. Neither control scheme seemed very usable and there's a bunch of underexplained RPG junk that's there for some reason. That said it was under a buck so "regret" might be a little strong.
I regret not buying the Switch version of Deemo during the same sale. It expired unexpectedly before I went to buy it.

Nothing recent. Probaboy still GTA V
It was a double dip for the PC version because I expected single player DLCs and enjoy the online
Then my firat game of online had a cheater that bombed the entire map so I never looked at it again
And of course, we never had single player DLC

Make this topic again in 3 months and it will probably be Pokemon Sword

Super Neptunia RPG. I was hoping the reviews were exaggerating on how bad it was but man. Lag on menu screens is just unacceptable and such braindead combat with so many unnecessary restrictions. Only the art and dialogue gave some relief.

Hmm. I get a lot of mediocre games through humble bundles, but I don't regret any of the actual bundles.

I do, however, regret most 4x game purchases. I end up getting suckered into buying one every other year or so. Most recent one was stellaris. They always feel like they're just about to become fun, but never actually get there for me. I don't think they're bad games, they're just not for me

Not that recent but Umbrella Corps for me. It was on sale and I only bought it for RE completionist sakes and hoped to at least maybe have a little fun killing zombies and crap in classic locations. However, even as just that it was absolutely despicable and a totally miserable time. One of the worst games I've ever played.

Hitman Absolution at launch after years and years of waiting for a follow up to Blood Money.

That was probably the most disappointed I've ever been with a new release, probably because I had such high expectations from the last game and this one was not only wildly different, but way less interesting and somehow clunkier and less dynamic AND smaller than before with terrible AI and annoying mechanics.

The first mission, I was able to literally walk up to the target while he was in an alley with his back turned with both his guards right beside him, and I was able to garrote wire him and drag him away without them noticing without any resistance just minutes into the mission.

And by the time the hotel mission came around, I was already so underwhelmed I dropped it with the obnoxious mechanic where anyone with your uniform will suspect you, which defeats the whole purpose of the mechanic (even though it does admittedly make sense, it's much less fun and intuitive.)

And then there's the perpetual arcadey points counter that punishes you for virtually anything you do and pressures you play certain ways.

I'd consider giving it another try now that I understand that it's more Splinter Cell than Hitman in that you just can't really be seen at all, but the modern sequels are SO good!

I'll likely get some push back for this, but most recently it's probably Octopath Traveler, however it has less to do with the quality of the game itself and more to do with me realizing that I wasn't interested in that type of game at the time.

I actually pre-ordered it when I got my Switch in June 2018 just because I wanted games, played an enjoyed the demo, and then let it sit for an entire year as I never wanted to invest time into it. Eventually I realized it wasn't a "time" issue and more of me just not wanting to play the game.

A solid runner up is Middle Earth: Shadow of War. I loved the first game, and even waited until this one was $20 but I still regret it after playing it for an hour and realizing, "oh, maybe one of these was enough".

This gen, the only one that really stands out for me was Elder Scrolls Online. Took about 15 minutes to realize I absolutely could not stand other people running around being idiots in an Elder Scrolls game. Thought I might be able to ignore it, but no. Money wasted, but lesson learned: MMOs, not for me. Bouncing so hard off ESO meant I wasn't at all tempted by the Fallout equivalent, so I count myself as lucky overall :)

I don't really buy many games these days due to how much of a backlog I've amassed. I ensure any I purchase are ones I don't regret.

That said, I do regret spending $40 on Tales of Vesperia: Definitive Edition. I remembered the plot being subpar, but it was just plain horrendous. The clunky gameplay certainly didn't help matters. Inevitable aging is why a JRPG absolutely needs a good plot, and this is the worst plot in any JRPG I've played so...

Also, I don't buy enough games to be disappointed by them. But the closest recently was the PS4 Kingdom Hearts collection. I can't be too mad since it's definitely good value, but I had forgotten how lackluster those games actually are. Some of the level design is inexcusably bad.
