So Land of the Lustrous might be my favorite show this season, despite being ranked sixth a few weeks ago. What is going on with this season?

Land of the Lustrous is absolutely killing it. This season is still amazing 2 months in, none of the stuff I liked from the beginning has floundered.

Not sure why I haven't dropped Zodiac War. It's a clear outlier in my palette.

I really thought Zodiac War was going for this purposely over-the-top cheese with the format of it's first episode. But then every episode had the exact same structure, and yeah, I'm starting to think it just has bad writing and a dumb plot.

I wasn't really expecting anything out of Zodiac War, so I really liked the beginning. But it just progressively gets worse the closer we get to shounen protagonist Rat winning the whole thing just because the writers wanted him to.

I gotta wonder if Bakemonogatari is mostly shaft and less Nisioisin. I could barely get though a volume of Medaka Box.

Medaka Box ended up being pretty great.

I'd have to reread the beginning or watch the anime to remember if it was outright bad or just wayyy too subtle of a satire.

OK so catching up on Zodiac War and I....episode 7 and 8 with Dragon or Snake were the most interesting, but what is with this total fucking embarrassment that is this drop in animation and art?

There must behind behind the scenes nightmare with this thing. How in the same episode do you have a chunk of bland animation, followed by SUDDENLY CG character models standing and not moving in obvious cost saving desperation, followed by a CG action scene that's so disturbingly smooth and dynamic it seems like it must cost MORE than your traditional animation?

Outside of this topic it's seemed to me that reaction to the new season has been pretty positive. Also I'm not sure if the people in this topic who don't like it are anywhere close to caught up.

Speaking of which, I watched episodes 2 and 3 of March Comes in Like a Lion S2 recently. They were okay I guess but man I should really just abandon ship here. Part of me wants to read the manga because for various reasons I think it would be somewhat better, but then again on the other hand I don't read manga much so...

I guess I'll give this upcoming arc a shot, but if this fails I'm pretty sure it's going to be strike three.

Eh? Medaka Box is probably the wordiest shounen manga I've read. One of the most text-heavy manga period.

...Well goddamn. Season 2 opened up with Soma kicking the ass of Alice who was basically the unbeatable girl with an even higher score than the master of curry who never got humbled in season 1. I thought she would be one of the final challenges but she got defeated round 1. That's pretty amazing. Season 2 is opening up on a good note.

Medaka Box in general was trying to be a weird witty clever shounen parody so it ends being more wordy than most shounen by default

Shinomiya served first against Megumi and won

I guess technically yeah. But that was a weird case where Megumi kind of lost, tied, and won (she got the same result as she would've gotten if she won) Her serving last did however still keep the plot device of completely stunning the opponent while the one who served first was more expected.
I think the first preliminary match with Soma is more fitting since he served last and technically lost against Hayama but even that one had Nikumi pointing out he would've won if it was a shokugeki and Hayama kind of stunned at the result.

I don't know about Food War but aren't most manga arcs generally several seasons ahead of the anime if they ever even get made? lol does this mean this pattern will go on even through season 3? I mean, it's not a bad pattern at all since it really sets the mood but it gets kind of predictable.

I just don't remember all of the current matches, there are some moves where the one that goes first wins and I know of one match where it does so, but it doesn't really count. Just Season 3 is less about 1v1 kitchen battle primarily.

Does Erina ever get humbled? She's so smug it's unbearable. Pretty much every single other character has been humbled now, even the alumnis but not her and she deserves it the most.

Soma actually acknowledges others, like Hayama when he knows they have stuff that he doesn't or that motsuya place being way better than their district. Also we see him getting his ass kicked by his dad and Shinomiya. Plus he's both a graceful winner and not a sore loser unlike Erina who acted like a 6 year old throwing a tantrum in episode 2 and doesn't seem to have grew from then. She's still in denial despite all the evidence to the contrary to the point she actually seems delusional. I mean, I thought Soma was really cocky at first too but he really grew on me especially when he stood up for Megumi (which so far has still been the highlight imo). Speaking of Megumi, the ED clearly shows she's going to lose to Ryo which is a shame since she's one of the most likeable characters in the show

Erina is the most overrated character by school standards. 80% of the characters just flat out seem better than her by this point because she's never cooked an actual dish.

Even Megumi is a better chef than Erina at the current moment, just saying.

But to respond to the current season, yeah. Megumi is essentially at the point where she's a better cook, but she's so self-conscious that she ends up becoming fodder for most others. You may not want to know this spoiler, but you'll also probably forget it by the time the anime makes it to it. Megumi gets a massive boost in confidence for training reasons during the current manga arc and actually shows up strong.

Soma's more the type of smugness where he just knows he's better than everyone else and has no need to prove it. Of course he stands up for his lessers - he knows they can't do it themselves, and without at least a push from him, they wouldn't be able to accomplish anything.

I don't always get that feeling. He might be like that way after serving a dish but in the prep work he generally acknowledges that his opponents are worthy rivals and prepares his best to face them. Like he still tells Takumi that he didn't know there were people who were this good and that he could learn from them. Unlike Erina who insists that she's superior even right after evidence to the contrary smacked right in her face and her own assistant gone.

lmfao even Subaru is now more likeable than Erina and I thought they'd finally make a character I'd hate more than her.
