Ah, nice. This season 1 is kind of a cliffhanger ending. And Erina was hyped up to be this main character who rivals Soma throughout the OP and ED but she's barely more than a background character in this first season.

I've now watched the prequel + 5 episodes of The Ancient Magus' Bride and I think I'm going to stop there. I hate how Chise has exactly two settings (dull acceptance or generic sadness) despite interacting with a fantastical world. There's also no moral ambiguity here, not even in aspects where there really should be. Elias is a 100% good guy because he's nice to Chise, never mind the fact that he bought her at a slave auction and outright admitted she has no choice but to go along with what he wants. There was so much they could've done with this premise but instead they didn't do anything. They introduced 100% evil sorcerers, though!

I'm still new to anime but finding both this and Red Data Girl to be so exceedingly mediocre makes me wonder if I'm just not cut out for fantasy anime. People have been loving AMB everywhere else I've looked.

Hey Roba don't feel bad. I also am not a huge fan of fantasy settings for anime. I'm with you, I don't think that either of those two anime are anything special. But then again I have very arbitrary reasons for disliking anime.

Just know that there's at least 30 anime per season. You could drop 15 every season and still end up with things to watch.

I dropped Steins;Gate around episode 5 because I thought nothing happens

I went back to it a few months later when I've leveled up my powers and enjoyed the heck out of it

But Steins;Gate is not a slice of life. You need to feel connected and relatable to characters in slice of life for it to work, and that's hard to do in fantasy/sci-fi settings.

I might have to watch another episode or two of AMB (I mean, there are only three more available anyway) just to see which of my two problems might get addressed! Episode 5 seemed like the perfect time for moral ambiguity to come into play but then Chise was like 'no I'm fine with it though' and I figured that would be all there was.

Might be a bit closer to to that. I only watched a little of that show, I should go back to it.

A lot of fans who have read ahead are saying that it's more Full Metal Alchemist than anything. Obviously not seeing a ton of that yet, but I could imagine a path forward like that at the very least. I know zero spoilers, but I've seen the comparison brought up far too much to wave it off.

I mean I was already comparing it most strongly to Fullmetal Alchemist even in my most recent post about it when I got caught up to the most recent episode of the anime.

I haven't seen anyone else talk about the show at all either, so it's not like I'm just saying that because I've seen other people make that comparison or whatever.

And yeah Roba I don't really think the anime is portraying Elias is a good guy like you're saying. Like if I had to choose "good" or "bad" I'd choose good, sure, but I don't think it's that clear-cut at all. I mean, there's a reason Chise's response to the sorcerers is not "but he's a good guy!" but instead "I don't care whether or not he's a good guy". (Ok so more literally it's "I don't care what his motivations are", but I think that's effectively the same.)

Yeah, that was the wrong way for me to phrase it.

Chise is just so instantly and unquestioningly accepting of him that it bothers me. I think that acceptance would mean more if she had an ounce of doubt in the first place but even as early as episode one she was all 'no he's nice to me I don't want to leave'.

That said, I've now watched up to Episode 8. It still hasn't really addressed my problems but at this point I think I'll stick with it, if only because keeping up with new episodes as they come out won't be too much of a commitment. It has shown more promise in these recent episodes, too, so I'm willing to see where that goes.

Well when you're about to kill yourself because no one wants you and even your mother didn't want you and killed herself in front of you it kind of skews your perception and you may be happy with anyone who wants you, hence why she let herself be auctioned at a slave market in the first place

I wanted an ongoing anime that I'd truly be excited for so I started Anime-Gataris and just finished episode three. Now this is a good anime! I can really relate with the main character being new to anime, which makes it seem like a strange yet wonderful world to explore.

Looks like it's mostly promoting new seiyuu talent. I'll give it a try so I can scout the next big thing. Might overlap with Blend S in the moe department though.

That's the other anime I'm watching aside from Love Live Sunshine for this season. I like it a lot too.

It was originally published in a yuri magazine, the same one that Yuru Yuri was originally in, and the anime looks to have adapted some parts from it.
