Okay FFX supporting crew, it seems that alternate is more important than "seventh song slot", so now I'm definitely going to be changing the nomination. Since it's essentially a tiebreaker song, I don't care about repeating melodies. I'm think about using Movement in Green (or Sprouting depending on your translation), but Ending Theme is also in my head as well, since it made this year's VGMusic Contest.

I think Ending Theme would be a fitting rematch song despite my worries about its potential performance, but my ears are open.

I'll keep Shinshuu in mind until someone else gives their opinion. As for The Eight Dog Warriors' Theme, that's another candidate I could see dethroning Harami Lake. It, Dragon Palace, and The Eight Dog Warriors' Theme all have a sort of slow, sad pace. Then again, none of them may be well received for that reason.

All right, it's three days later than I made it, but here we go.

Nomination: Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3 FES
1. Living With Determination -Iwatodai Station- -

Alt. Unavoidable Battle -

Darkness: This is my third favorite battle theme, especially for the section near the end. That said, it is probably not as strong the other two battle themes that are here to stay. I could see it working, but Board 8 may not be as impressed by it as I am.

Heartful Cry: My favorite piece from Persona 3 FES, bar none. This gets me emotionally every time. At least The Answer had the courtesy to give players this piece, to make up for all the stupidity it threw around before.

Living With Determination -Iwatodai Station-: Not completely sold on Board 8 caring for this. I certainly like it if nothing else. It has a somber atmosphere while not sounding too slow. It sure beats out the other dormitory theme, if nothing else.

Memories of the City: This is probably the most emotional piece in the game. It is also probably one of the only ones I dare risk keeping in permanently despite my worries for how votes will go for pieces like this. I think it has potential.

Memories of the School: Out of the three slower, more emotional pieces, this one falls a little short. I think this could easily be removed if something else seems more valid. Give some opinions on what should be swapped if you agree.

The Battle for Everyone's Souls: No way this gets removed. It is the penultimate piece for this game. It's been proven to be loved in the VGMC, and by many fans speaking of it elsewhere. Consider it locked in.

Unavoidable Battle: Iffy. Very, very iffy. I am not confident with how well this would do. But comparing it to the other battle themes, it seems the best from that pool. If a different theme stands out, I am fine with dropping this.

Considerations for switching: Maiya Theme, Master of Shadow, Memories of You, The Snow Queen, Time Castle

Ones I love but Board 8 probably would not: Changing Seasons, Burn My Dread, Deep Breath Deep Breath, Master of Tartarus, P3 FES

I am not sure how to count the four alternate Tartarus themes for FES, considering that I think they are remixes from previous Persona games, but I think they still apply due to being a variation and being heard in the game.

As a side note, I also made a Persona 4 and Tales of the Abyss nomination list on the same day I made that. If someone wants one of those posted, or if someone decides to make one and wants to hear my thoughts on them, I'm happy to oblige.

It's more of a "what the heck would Board 8 support" problem for me than anything else. The ten I listed below might have potential that's just being smothered by my concerns.

Now that I have had some time to do some research, I can finally give you my suggestions Nio:

1. Bird Chirps, I Sing is better suited in a mid-power position, like 3rd or 4th

2. You could also substitute it for Tomorrow Will Surely Be Sunny since it is essentially the same song without the vocals. It seems to be a love/hate song and removing the vocal aspect could make it stronger. You could keep both and insert one in the Alt spot or first round.

3. Remove 12 O'Clock and Middle of the Storm. I honestly don't see those two winning a match here unless it was against Touhou

4. Possible replacements are Whisper of the Crystal and Melfes - Shining Blue. B8 seems to have this weird standard when it comes to VG music that it cannot start out slowly and gradually build up, Ace Combat being one of the very few exceptions, so they may not be excellent substitutes, but they are easily better than what you currently have

As for my suggestions for Shoe and F-Zero GX:

1. Remove Dr. Stewart, James McCloud, Zoda, Phoenix, and maybe Big Blue Cover.

2. If you really want some character themes, Mrs. Arrow and Captain Falcon may be your best bet. They are the good kind of cheesy. Jody Summer may have a chance too

3. Like a Snake, ZEN, Planet Colors, Hurrah for the Champion, and Item Song #1 are probably the best choices for being replacements

I was originally considering not using U.N. And the "might be able to make this float" comment was when I was originally planning to make Imperishable Night my next nomination--which, upon further reflection, has enough to become my next nomination after this. Set list tomorrow.

Although with U.N. Owen pushing The Maid and the Pocket Watch of Blood out, this nomination only ends up using songs from three stages (Stage 2, Stage 6, and Extra--all three have both their stage theme and their boss theme, with the other song actually belonging to the title screen.)

Yeah, I was thinking maybe I should go with that for the Alternate instead. The alternate only gets used if a game ends up in the loser's bracket, right? Lunate Elf is good, but it might not be what I'd want trying to bail this game out of a jam.

Funny, I have the exact opposite view. It was looking initially like the alternate was going to end up being a 7th song in the overall rotation for games that made it that far. (Granted that wouldn't be many.) Now it's back to truly being a back-up song. But OTOH having a strong tiebreaker *could* be important, so both views are valid.

In other news, we are now over 100 nominations. We'll probably break 128 by the end of Sunday. I will not be expanding the field, but that means that a game has less than a 50% chance of getting in, from a purely random point of view.

I fully anticipate we'll have a flurry of support votes at the end. As of *right now*, all the 2-support games would be in, barely. So in all likelihood a game will need 3 or more support votes to make the cut, but that's just an educated guess.

Keep in mind, I have not counted any nods of confidence if it wasn't pretty much explicit that you were supporting. Chatting about the soundtrack familiarly does not count. And I am not going back to look to see if your imposed conditions for a support are met. (You might also want to check to make sure I haven't made any errors. The second page of the spreadsheet has all the support votes I have counted.)

First point: no shame in being an alt, in fact it might become a very important slot depending on what happens.
Second point: I like Shevat: The Wind is Calling, and as a matter of fact, someone I talked to on AIM recommended it. But give me an honest opinion here. Do you think it would fare well with Board 8 voters? I hesitated with it for that reason.

Ah, okay. Alt is fine, then.

And, yes, I really do feel it would do much better than almost any XG track; if I had just chosen my favorite I woulda chosen "The Sky, Clouds, and You", which of course be received horribly. =P

Somebody mentioned "Lunar" music and how Crowded Street Corner bombed, getting just ONE vote, I believe (maybe two). But, for a minor correction, that song was a 1 seed, not a 2-seed. Can you believe it? =P It's got to be the most embarassing upset in vgmusic contest history. Fyi, its opponent was "Bloody Tears" from a CV game, which really shouldn't have been a 16.

Unimportant question, since I didn't nominate anything yesterday, is that day's nomination lost forever? I'm assuming yes, but I'm just curious. Of course, at this stage I'm nominating basically my second or lower tiers (either second tier for me personally, or I'm fairly sure the board itself would destroy it in the contest even if I really like it), so it's no big deal either way.

Definitely would appreciate input on this one, because I think it's a bit of a mess where I tried and failed miserably to think of what the board would like the most. My own personal version has Snow's Theme, and Gapra Whitewood in, probably at the expense of Fighting Fate and Sunleth Waterscape, the latter going to Alt or something. I'm totally not sure where the board's general opinion is on most of these. I'm fairly certain Blinded By Light, Saber's Edge, and Dust to Dust are fairly liked, but all kinds of warning signs are going off for me in thinking that Dust to Dust is the most liked of the bunch.

I'm very likely to do that if I decide to nominate something like Ar tonelico 1 or any of the other .hack//G.U. volumes, where I either think the board isn't going to support it that far in the first case, or where I just don't think I can line up enough songs to get it to make a deep run (the latter cases).

I do think AT2 is a legitimate contender though. Xenosaga III and G.U. Vol 1 were just me being really, really optimistic though. FFXIII up there I'm expecting that list to change anyway.

I'm not! Though I admit that I've been putting songs with high recognition level in some of the late slots (like U.N. Owen, although I really was surprised when I gave the whole soundtrack a listen to pick out my choices and discovered that the original arrangement...really was kind of mediocre. No wonder it gets remixed so often.)

Yeah, that's half the reason I didn't nominate yesterday. I never really felt right about doing that with Ar tonelico 1, even though it was less me trying to "stack" it since I'm pretty sure EXEC_RE=NATION wouldn't fare well on the board. I just didn't feel too comfortable with the idea, because when it came down to it, it really sounded to me like "I want to see what RE=NATION can do" which obviously isn't what this contest is about. Likewise, I still think the other G.U. soundtracks are good, but I'm pretty sure I'd be kidding myself if I could put up a competitive entry for them to last the whole contest, and so I'm not sure it's worth the trouble to go to. It's entirely likely FFXIII is my last nomination because I find it unlikely I'll think of another soundtrack that I like and that I think could fare decently on the board.

As for Fighting Fate, it's personally not in my upper tiers of FFXIII songs, but it did make a VGMC so I figured it had some board support. Something I couldn't say for some others I personally like more, I feel it's the weakest of that original list but I could be way off.

I've been trying to avoid Radiant Historia's soundtrack until I could play it, but I've heard Blue Radiance and MAN, I absolutely love it. If it's all that quality, I'm totally going to throw out a support for it when I get my list together.

I hated some of the Mother 3 selection so much that I couldn't support it, actually.

Yeah... I would've just let somebody else do Mother 3 if I was reasonably sure that it would actually get nominated by somebody else. Didn't really want to take that chance :|

Well, it's not like you can do anything about it if the nominator's choices differed from yours except for "suggest". With Touhou 10, I'm pretty much in agreement, but like I said, my choices for Touhou 8 differed drastically...but Touhou's awesome so whatever.
