Whether it was due to length, difficulty, some other reason (corrupted save file, rental period ending, etc.), what's the best game you never finished?

For me it's a toss up between:
BotW (length)
Persona 3: FES (PS3 save file got corrupted)
Donkey Kong 64 (could never beat the last boss when I was a kid)

That's a good question, but I'm interpreting this as a game that I have tried and failed to finish as a opposed to a game that I have started but have simply not yet beaten yet.

Maybe the SNES version of Wario's Woods?

Dragon Quest 11, if you count act 3 as part of beating the game.

Rogue Legacy 2 if you don't count that, but do count games that aren't actually finished yet.

Probably Xenoblade Chronicles, otherwise. (Kept getting distracted by sidequests instead of the main story, eventually got burnt out.)

My usual reason for dropping games is because they're bad (or at least because I don't like them), so this is tough to answer.

Crypt of the Necrodancer, maybe? That game rocks, I'm just not good enough at it to finish it.

I'm struggling to think of a game I failed to finish. I've dropped good games because I just lost interest halfway through, like Resident Evil 4 - it was good, but I just kinda dropped it for some reason, no particular reason why.

First thing that comes to mind is super-hard word puzzler The Fool and his Money. I don't like to use walkthroughs on puzzle games - defeats the point - but I haven't been able to complete enough puzzles in it to beat the game so I've let it stew for a while. That's one of the only instances in which I think I'd be legit unable to beat a game.

Dragon Age: Origins

Can't remember why or what point I stopped playing but I'll have to try it again sometime.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

The last thing I remember was exploring a mech dungeon or something which reminded me of Gnomeregan in WoW. Was a bit bored of the gameplay by that point.

Final Fantasy X

Twice I've made it to Mount Gagazet, became bored and stopped playing. To be fair it is a long game.

Forza Horizon 4

Very addictive game but there is simply too much content to finish.

GTA 5

I love all the side content, collecting and mucking around but the main story missions are kind of boring to me after a certain point.

Terraria

The furthest point I've reached is a bit after Hardmode, I'd had enough but my friends kept playing.

The original Link's Awakening - got to the final boss and turned the game off before starting it. Came back that night to beat it and my save file was wiped. Luckily got to rectify this when the remake came out and beat it. So my real answer is

Metal Gear Solid 3. Probably got somewhat near the end and I moved cities. I brought my PS2 with me on the move of course but never picked it back up, for whatever reason.

I guess Final Fantasy IV among games that I got far enough to judge. I liked it a fair amount and was near the end, but I reached a difficulty spike right around the time I first moved to college and just never finished as a result.

Also possibly Radiant Historia or Lost Odyssey, by virtue of being well-regarded games which I dropped very early on for dumb reasons.

Tales of Symphonia - I ended up selling it when I got laid off. Bought it again since but lost my save file. Haven't gone back

The only game I can think of that I couldn't finish is Lightning Returns. I got stuck on the first boss and accepted that I suck and gave up. Someday I will get my revenge

Xenoblade Chronicles X

I reached that point where you have to grind like 10 levels or some shit just to meet the bare minimum level requirement for a story mission.

Then once I hit the level I got my teeth kicked in by the boss and realized I had to grind more. Needless to say I haven't gone back since.

I usually finish games so this is a tough question honestly.

...Wait, I know the answer. Pillars of Eternity 2. I could basically have started endgame but was experiencing burnout because of some silly decisions made on my part. Really need to, at some point, get around to that. ...By making nearly the exact same questionable decisions that led to the drop lol.

Witcher 3 also became increasingly crash-prone as I played and the intervals between crashes kept getting shorter and shorter so I had to give up on it and suspected it to be a memory leak or something. Think I was in Novigrad.

oh man. i don't think i've ever actually completed an isometric crpg that had combat (this clause is to account for disco elysium). icewind dale, tyranny, pillars of eternity, pathfinder: kingmaker, others... i've somehow accumulated all of these highly reviewed games that i cannot stomach

Bloodborne. Got to the end of NIghtmare of Mensis, but didn't fight the boss. Decided to do the Chalice Dungeons, but got filtered by the one where your health is cut in half. Still one of the best games ever.

Honestly this kind of thing happens way more than I'd like. My obsessive nature makes me want to 100% everything, but once I see credits, I usually lose all desire to keep playing.

I think Final Fantasy VII. I know I got far enough to be able to fight Weapons, but I think I got super disillusioned with Final Fantasy superbosses and the need to grind forever for post-endgame stuff (hi FFX! I really just want to see that last theater sphere! No, I do not want to fight your super Valefor, I just want to go in the city. No, I do not want to grind for another ten hours to be close to beating it and the others. You know what, I'd rather go play FFX-2 and just catch monsters. At least levelling them up lets me see some fun theatre orb-like stuff.).

Sorry what were we talking about?

Oh, right.

- FFVII is definitely one

- I don't know if I actually finished Kingdom Hearts II? I think I moved on from grinding Final Form levels to grab the last puzzle piece or two and just never went back.

- I've only beaten Harvest Moon 64 on my first file ever, and I still remember how lonely a party myself and Maria had. I had at least seven-plus files that went deep in, but either because the greenhouse made days drag on and money not an issue, marriage made talking to people and visiting the bar at night boring (the dialogue just keeps repeating, and the bar is now empty), or a combination of that and hsving done everything, I never finished Spring 3 again.

- Terraria, Stardew Valley, and My Time at Portia are other like games that I've gotten super far and put over 100 hours into, but stop before the finish line.

- Not at all the best game, but the amount of times I've gotten so far into Aidyn Chronicles: The First Mage only to move on before finishing is... aggravating in hindsight.

Oh! OH! I just remembered an actual failure!

Me and this kid I was babysitting were playing Sonic 2 and got to I think the final boss. We died, but still had a continue. And my Nintendo-playing ass who was too excited to read pressed A. For accept. Like you would normally do on a Nintendo controller.

We didn't continue. Because A was no or cancel.

Guh.

Witcher 3, GTA5 - the kids were old enough to understand words (or rather, understand that they didn't understand the content haha) so I had to bail on them.

XBX - some tough times in life and hard to get back into the game without feeling bad.

There's probably a pile of NES and Genesis games that I rented and used game genies on, so I didn't beat them properly but whatever.

If we're talking ones I'm never coming back to then probably either Witcher 3 or Super Mario World, which I never had the patience to finish as a kid because I sucked (and still suck) at 2D Marios. Witcher 3 I didn't enjoy the combat whatsoever and it was either a cakewalk or a slog depending on the difficulty. I liked the storytelling and quests well enough (they were honestly really good) but I had enough of grimdark stuff years ago and couldn't bring myself to play more than an hour max at a time.
