If you're talking legit spoilers and not just silly things like "the princess is in another castle" it's Samus is a girl. Both are such common knowledge (at least among gamers in regard to Samus) that they aren't even considered spoilers.

For instance, my wife is a casual gamer. She knows Samus is a girl. She watched me play FFVIIR and has no clue about any of the future plot points beyond the end of that game.

So with Samus I was kind of debating on whether or not someone's gender could be considered a spoiler, but even the Metroid manual refers to her as a 'him'. So I kind of get it.

Idk I still gotta go with FF7, just because it actually means a lot for the plot. Which is why the Star Wars one has that reputation for movies.

I'm predisposed towards not wanting to count "Samus is a girl" as a plot twist, but I suppose since so many disagree I'd have to try to articulate why.

Poka already got most of it.

But I'd also say... if the only reason something is a twist is because the player assumes something they have no reason to assume, I wouldn't say that's a twist. Granted, players in 1987 do have a reason to assume the main character is male, just by default, but... someone playing the game for the first time in 2021 with (somehow) no previous knowledge wouldn't. And then the question is: is it the developer's intent at time of creation that matters either way...?

Well according to Tangy the manual calls Samus "him", so it's not really an assumption at that point. Though I do agree with Poka that it doesn't affect the experience at all

I don't think spoilers necessarily have to be a plot twist. It just has to be something unexpected. Samus being a girl was unexpected. I don't know if the princess being in another castle was expected or not.

Of course, this is a super general use for the term spoiler. Some people may be nowhere near as loose with it as I am.

The technical answer is probably some random twist from a Call of Duty or GTA game, but as far as twists go that have managed to extend beyond their fanbase, I think nothing beats FF7. Tons of people know that without having ever played it.

I'm not sure why so many people are saying the spoiler has to affect gameplay to be "famous". It's hard to argue with Samus, even though it's not a particularly consequential twist.

Porky being in league with Giygas in Earthbound was an interesting alliance.

Zelda II's final boss is yourself! That was a surprise, for sure.

I suppose it's not a spoiler, but the plot in Tie Fighter presents the Empire as the keepers of peace and order in the galaxy, which almost begins to make sense by the end of the missions with Admiral Thrawn.

These two aren't even really the same thing. "Princess is in another castle" is silly because nobody actually expects the game to end at the first castle. It's a joke answer. "Samus is a girl" is legit.

I don't know why the nature of the spoiler has to be relevant to the experience. That's not necessarily what a spoiler is.

Its common knowledge in like the smash games, and you don't get modded for saying it. I know you get modded for end of disc one being unmarked.

I feel that Princess is another castle counts. I know somebody who played that games for days and then celebrated when they won the game to only find that message. If it counts it wins hands down.

If not, then the end of disc one is the most famous spoiler of video games. I knew that years before I ever touched a Final Fantasy game.

I think end of disc one (I like that that's what we're all agreeing to call it) is clearly on top as far as a Vader-like plot twist is concerned.
