I kept watching the trailers for that several times a day up until the release, I played the demo a million times, and it was the only game I've ever pre-ordered. It's still one of my favorites in the series.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl

Lived up to the hype for the most part.

It's interesting because my first thought was the original SSB and how cool both the art and commerical was and it was the first game where I had to get it in the first week. Then I remembered reading Nintendo Power and the massive jump in quality Gamecube was getting and one of the first games on it would be Melee and getting super-hyped for that.

But nothing beats over a year of following the Dojo and that Snake trailer.

I kind of got into the Brawl/dojo hype. Inferior to Melee, but perfectly playable. I think it gets too much hate just for being so mechanically different.

The game I felt hype for that was a colossal, insulting disaster on every possible level was CivRev DS.

Portable Civ just needed to be well-made and functional to be great, but that game is such an unplayable piece of trash that it's amazing.

Probably the last game I ever bought blind, too.

Brawl. Ended up being a bit disappointed by it, but then I didn't get too caught up in the Smash 4 hype, which ended up being much better, so it sort of evened out.

Harvest Moon: Friends of Mineral Town (young me annoyed the local game store so badly by phoning once a day to ask if my preorder was in. FoMT was great)
Super Smash Bros: Brawl (still the only game I went to a midnight release for. I liked it)

If they count, Life is Strange Episodes 4 and 5 are the most hyped I've ever been about anything. Ep4 delivered, Ep5 was a bit of a letdown.

i might be using 'hype' pretty liberally in some of these cases.

SoulCalibur III - Hype Level: High. SoulCalibur II was a huge favorite and I'm pretty sure this was my first instance of hype for a game release. The fact that they included a black guy with a scythe was a huge source of the hype because I thought that was the coolest thing ever and pledged to main him. Somewhat dampened by not owning a PS2 at the time so I knew the chances of me being able to play it soon after release was not high. But hype persevered. Until the game came out and reports that it had a save glitch that would corrupt your ENTIRE MEMORY CARD. I guess I always just assumed that digital data would be permanent so that news just blew my mind. Got around to playing it a while later after buying a new memory card to specifically use for just this game because I was paranoid. Definitely did not deliver on the little bit of hype I had kept alive until I was able to play it. Slower paced than II, chock full of glitches and forgettable side characters shoehorned in from the single player mode, baffling changes to movesets of certain characters. The game felt like it was permeated by this glossy drabness where everything seemed like cheap imitations where things looked "better" but felt worse.

Brawl - Hype Level: Maximum. Obvious one but the disappointment was placated by never actually buying it myself since I didn't have a Wii. Then I realized I just got swallowed up by everyone else's hype even though I didn't particularly care about any of the new character additions and hated the third party additions.

SoulCalibur II HD Online - Hype Level: High. Attached to the hope of the game becoming competitively relevant again since at the time it originally was, I had no knowledge of the scene. Mixed emotions because while most of the gameplay aspects were faithfully retained, the "online" portion of the game fucking sucked and it was pretty bold of them to include "Online" in the official title in store listings. No lobbies and you had to literally send the person you were playing an invitation after ONE fucking game every time. And netcode was not even good. And it was $20!!

Persona 4 Ultimate 2/Arena Ultimax - Hype Level: High to Moderate. MORE PERSONA CHARACTERS. There were a lot of minor things that contributed to the lowering of hype as the release neared though. The game being out for a long time in Japan prior to NA release, shittalk about the game from various top players, the fucking color scheme, the goddamn hit effect noise, shadow characters being bullshit, etc.

Zero Time Dilemma - Hype Level: High to Moderate. After news of financial difficulty or whatever and the sentiment that this was not going ever see the light of day after the way VLR ended, hype when the announcement for this came was pretty high. All the characters looked so fucking sick. The game was okay I guess.

Persona 5 - weird one since after all the delays I convinced myself I wasn't hyped for it any more and even after the TAKE YO HEART edition got delivered on release date, I didn't touch it for like two days. Did play it and was amazing though.

Most hyped games of all-time

01. Persona 5 - delivered in spades

02. Final Fantasy VIII - delivered in ****ing spades

03. Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty - great game but did not meet expectations especially with Solid Snake being snubbed for the rest of the game.

04. Suikoden III - hype for me was insane after how amazing Suikoden II was. It did not deliver at all and the whole game I was comparing it to SII and how much inferior this game was. Still a lot better than IV but it was way more disappointing.

05. Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain - Gameplay actually exceeded expectations. It was done incredibly well. However I wanted an amazing story which I didn't get. So it is a disappointment.

06. Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots - The epic conclusion to the series that I wanted and I got. Still the 2nd best game in the series.

07. Final Fantasy X - Delivered in spades

08. Resident Evil 4 - Delivered in spades and made the Resident Evil series from somethig great to one of the best of all time.

09. Xenoblade Chronicles X - Huge disappointment after the admittedly unrealistic expectations I set after seeing the X project trailer. The fact that the plot was so minimalistic and not great was the killer for me.

10. Silent Hills - **** you Konami. We will never know.

Oh yeah not sure why I forgot P5. Immensely hyped for years and totally delivered.

XCX was also ridiculously hype when the first trailer came out with the mechs and dinosaurs, but fortunately they revealed enough about the game before release for me to lose all interest (unlike MGSV which kept up the illusion).
