Very weird to see a list that is trying to be relevant historically, but doesn't include Super Mario Bros 1. Sure, they might think they are trying to avoid Mario overload due to 64 and 3 being there, but gaming's history of the 80s and 90s was a Mario overload.

BOTW is going to completely lay waste to this poll because none of the other games on this list are even kind of like it - no other action-adventures except for Dark Souls (which is more action-oriented as opposed to BOTW's adventure focus), no other adventure games that are really of that style (you could call GTAV and Minecraft adventures but not really the same thing), no other Zelda games despite Zelda probably remaining - if not the most prestigious, award-winning game franchise of all time AND of current time, it's certainly very close.

Minecraft seems like the only game that could possibly challenge it. Everything else is all tied up in SFF.

Also hilarious is that there is ZERO representation of the 6th generation outside of Halo (unless you count Half-Life 2), yet multiple reps of the era from before we invented more than 10 colors, which is absolutely nutty.

This is an extremely short list so you obviously can't pick everyone's personal favorite, but you really telling me you can't squeeze in a single PS2 game, a system that has arguably the strongest library in gaming? Lol

Id swap out Super Mario Kart for RE4 and Id probably try to cram Skyrim in here but its a very good list overall if you had to pick 20

would probably take out space invaders, pac-man is a good rep from classic arcade already.

would also swap out Pokmon Go for a mainline game but I understand the arguments for its inclusion

I think the portals are interchangeable but I like that Portal had one key thing it did and it did it incredibly well. Its basically bite sized perfection

i also understand the argument to include Portal 2 over Portal because it also didnt do much wrong, I think portal just fits better due to its conciseness

This is such a weird (bad) list.

It's like they are randomly deciding for each slot whether to get a historically relevant game, a cultural phenomenon game or a good game.

For example how do you justify both:
Botw > OoT
and
Super Mario 64 > Any of the good new mario games

in the same list. Sure you could argue Botw is better than Oot (I don't think it is) but it's definitly not better for it's time period. While that same argument is way easier to make for a modern mario (Galaxy games for example)

It does seem a little odd that there are Four First Person Shooters and only one RPG - especially since this list is supposed to encompass the entire world and not just the US.

Actually, now that I look a little closer, there's a surprising amount of Western games, which is also surprising considering Japan's role in video gaming over the years. It looks like the non-Western games in that list are -

- Super Mario 64
- Street Fighter II
- Space Invaders
- Super Mario Kart
- Super Mario Bros. 3
- The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
- Metal Gear Solid
- Pac-Man

When 3 of the 8 Japanese games are Mario games and two of them are Space Invaders and Pac-Man, it seems like they could have evened things out with the Western games a little more. There absolutely should have been a Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest in there and Pokemon RBY instead of Pokemon Go. Super Metroid of Castlevania SotN would have also been excellent options. Skyrim probably would be a better choice than Dark Souls for a Western RPG.

There's also not a single Sega game anywhere on that list.

At a surface glance, it doesn't seem like a bad list. Thinking a little harder, I'm reasonably confident I could make a better list with a few swaps, but outside of maybe Pokemon Go, I understand why all of those games would appear on the list.

Also, I just voted and it's possible to do so without entering personal information. Aren't they worried about vote-stuffing?

Nah, it's one of three Mario Karts that are still worth playing today. DS has the best mechanics, Super has the unique arcade-like gameplay, and 8 makes all of the others completely outdated and pointless. Super gets points for still being worthwhile and beginning the franchise.

I know 20 is a hard number but it does feel like they compromised between historical importance and acclaim and ended up with choices that aren't ideal for either.

Pokmon GO being there instead of any other game in the series is a joke.

Just once I wish people would make a top x games that was focused purely on the quality of the game. Mainly because it would filter out garbage games that aren't fun to play, like BotW

The three most glaring omissions:

Final Fantasy VII
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
Resident Evil 4

Bummed out at the lack of JRPGs, we really needed Chrono Trigger or one of either FFVI or FFVII on there.

TLOU is a great game, but I don't think it belongs anywhere near this list.

Also, there is no way that BotW belongs over OoT, LttP, or even the original Zelda. You can argue for the other 3 for several reasons. BotW seems much more like a "it's very popular right now" type thing.

I also don't know how I feel about GTAV over VC or SA.

I also understand the need to have early arcade titles, but I don't know if you need both pac man and space invaders. Like ms pac man is by far the superior game. I understand that the judging was for a mix of things, but it does seem like they weighed stuff differently for different titles.

As for Mario Kart, not sure about this. I was never into the snes version and only really played once it was on 64. I don't really have the historical context on why it belongs on the list.

PokemonGos time was a little too short lived imo for the type of game it was. It caused a huge craze for a little bit, but now people rarely talk about it. Like how don't you put RBY on it? This is a glaring flaw in the list that puts the whole validity of it into question.

I think you have to choose between Halo or COD4. You can't have both.

As for games to add. Obviously I think OoT and Pokemon RBY are such big snubs. But A Final fantasy game (probably 7) and Maybe Skyrim too. Skyrim has almost unprecedented longevity for a "modern" title, people still talk about it today.

And, while I know it wasn't aged well... and there are problems with the company... it's hard not to put something like WoW (classic) or Starcraft up here too since we are weighing historical significance and popularity too.

An extremely British reader-voted list by a British gaming magazine with tons of weird and eclectic choices reflecting old British gaming. Fair enough, but pretty questionable to be used as a basis for a project alleging to be about anything beyond Britain. Also it's from 2004 so lol.

But they seems to be actually created the list themselves rather than opening it to reader and allegedly went straight for quality today instead of anything else. It seems sorta decent in general (in which games they picked if not their specific order) but they somehow ended up with Final Fantasy XII as the only FF game.

People who make those lists try to make things diverse or they'd be labelled as a fanboy for a particular series. Take Mario as an example, if you thought the series was very good you could conceivably have the following games in your top 20.

Super Mario Bros.
Super Mario Bros. 3
Super Mario World
Super Mario 64
Super Mario Galaxy
Super Mario Galaxy 2
Super Mario Odyssey

Heck things like New Super Mario Bros. or Super Mario 3D World could be added. Not to mention if you also really liked the RPG/Paper Mario or Mario Kart.

Yeah, I think the worst game on this list is breath of the wild because it is the most wildly inconsistent entry with everything else.

Space Invaders and BotW can't be on the same list. Are you measuring relevance or how good the game actually is??

Minecraft (or maybe fortnite) are 100% the most influential games of the 2010s. Since minecraft is an older game that probably edges it.

I...I'm not sure if I even want to vote for any of this (in this context).

I suppose I can live with GTA V as my vote and Portal as the runner-up, but it feels more like a compromise than anything else.

I think most people here know this but Space Invaders is often credited for the first major title to introduce scaling difficulty (albeit on accident). In a similar way sf2 introduced combos to fighting games. I mean I actually would have probably even made sure I added Turbo to the end of the sf2 entry

That's not to take away that the game itself was very important to video games as a whole. For the time I'm sure the game was a masterpiece.

That said I still don't think you need it AND pacman on the list.
