I'm actually a little surprised BOTW didn't win but it makes sense that Dark Souls did since there's not a lot of games like it in the poll either

No, it's not recency bias. I pointed this out in an earlier post - Breath of the Wild is the only game in this poll that isn't getting horribly SFFed to hell and back, except for maybe Dark Souls, which was the winner. (Surprised that Doom got 2nd but I guess it stands out in the glut of shooters as being THE FPS.)

Yeah, but Breath of the Wild is not like the other Nintendo options, which are two Mario platformers, a Mario Kart, a mobile Pokemon game, and Tetris. It's really the only "open world" style of game on there, which probably helps it.

Yeah, aside from console choice I don't think the Nintendo branding matters too much given the range of choices in the poll. It's a more important factor that Zelda is the only thing that's like, a big open world game, and aside from Dark Souls the only thing that's even kind of action-adventure at all, which is overall one of the most popular genres. (In retrospect it's not too hard to see why Dark Souls was the biggest challenger to Zelda here - a bit surprised Doom got 2nd still)

Doom was probably the actual biggest game of the 90s in terms of mainstream cultural impact

Super Mario Kart being on a list of best games of all time is the weirdest thing ever. It wasn't even that great when it was the only Mario Kart let alone now with the 7 sequels.

Anyway Tetris is objectively the best game of all time.
