This could've scored excellent marks for its melody, but it does the thing Disney songs do much too often. It pauses the song right as it's getting good to have an annoying interlude of the hyenas being silly

While I would have ranked this higher, I think you make a good point. The hyenas do disrupt the flow and dramatic buildup.

I'm surprised at the relatively low villainy score for Grinch.
The thing is, it never really describes what makes The Grinch villainous! He's foul, nasty, wasty, vile. He's a bad banana, a monster, a heel, a rotter, a crooked jerky jockey. The three words that best describe him are "stink, stank, stunk," but none of those three words are inherently villainous!

And if we REALLY wanna nitpick, the song refers to his heart as both "an empty hole," "full of unwashed socks," and "a dead tomato splotch with moldy purple spots." Which is it? Those are contradictory statements!

38. You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch
Source: How the Grinch Stole Christmas
Villain: The Grinch

I wanted to nominate this and only got to actually contribute two, so I'll consider this an honorary addition to my list. (It's already out, so it's not like that keeps me in the running any longer.)

We're getting to the point where you can't really be deficient in any category. My one song, Music of the Night, is going to be very dependent on how villainous JB perceives the phantom to be. (While he doesn't directly characterize himself, I think there's enough implication and subtlety to carry that category, and Webber can certainly write a good tune.) But given how Mr. Grinch is scored, I'm thinking 20/30 (5-7-8) is a very real possibility.

36. Want You Gone
Source: Portal 2
Villain: GLaDOS
Nominator: MetalmindStats (ELIMINATED)
Favorite lyric: Goodbye, my only friend, / Oh, did you think I meant you? / That would be funny if it weren't so sad.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dVVZaZ8yO6o

Villainy: 3
Characterization: 8
Melody: 8
Total: 19/30

Sorry to eliminate you MMS, but all things considered, pretty good placement for only nominating one song! Kinda sad "Goodbye my only friend" didn't get nominated for the Best Female Video Game Villain Quote contest. Want You Gone continues the tradition Still Alive started by just doing a really good job characterizing GLaDOS, and even adds a little by throwing in some of her backstory in between the insults. I know Still Alive is by far the more popular Portal song (given that it became a meme for years afterwards) but I honestly prefer Want You Gone. Bringing in Jonathan Coulton for it definitely helped, plus I think you get a little more of Ellen McLain's vocal ability coming through here. Like Still Alive, it's not particularly evil. Just rude.

35. Defying Gravity
Source: Wicked
"Villain": Elphaba
Nominator: Snake5555555555 (1 left)
Favorite lyric: I'm through accepting limits 'Cause someone says they're so / Some things I cannot change But till I try I'll never know

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fEq3xM-i0Ng

Villainy: 1
Characterization: 10
Melody: 9
Total: 20/30

Alright guys, my bad, this one's on me. By all means, this one PROBABLY shouldn't have been accepted. It's the only song in the ranking that would score negative on the Villainy score if the system allowed for it. Like Vis said, Defying Gravity just isn't a villain song. The only reason I allowed it (and the reason I assume it was nominated) is because technically Elphaba is the villain of The Wizard of Oz, but she's literally the protagonist and hero of Wicked. Defying Gravity is a song all about Elphaba embracing who she is, finding her strength, and pushing forward and learning to fly. The only villainous thing about it is the extras calling her wicked. That being said, after allowing the song into the ranking, I also couldn't put it any lower than this, because Defying Gravity is a fucking fantastic song. It's widely recognized as one of the best musical songs to come out of this century, and for good reason. It's an incredible, defining moment for both the character and the audience with remarkable vocal range. It's just not villainous.

I had nominated it just because I think it's a unique take on a "villain song", it takes a well-established villain from the past and makes her the hero instead, but that perception of her being a villain is still there and she could still be considered a villain as perceived by the other characters in the scene during the number.

Yeah, don't get me wrong, I definitely get the idea of why it was nominated. That same idea is also just what makes it very hard to score and rank as a villain song xD

34. Just Monika
Source: Doki Doki Literature Club (fan song by Random Encounter)
Villain: Monika
Nominator: Raka Putra (ELIMINATED)
Favorite lyric: She's depressed and stressed and she's feeling blue, so I don't want Sayori hanging around you!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YYoOIGBcN48&vl=ko

Villainy: 6
Characterization: 8
Melody: 6
Total: 20/30

There's a lot this song does right, but a decent bit it does wrong as well. So I'll start with a brief pro/con list.
Pros
+ALMOST every singer does an excellent job capturing the personality of their character
+The song does an excellent job of capturing the entire game with like 3 minutes
+The song itself is pretty decent. Nothing amazing, but overall pleasant.
Cons
-The actor/singer doing the main character is bad. Seriously, dude barely has any lines and they require no range, and yet somehow he still stands out for sounding particularly awkward and flat.
-That fucking VRV ad in the middle of the song. Look, I wanted to overlook this, but this is literally the only version of the song Random Encounter uploaded to YouTube. I get YouTube creators need to put ads in their videos, and I can look past that, but putting an ad right in the middle of the song? Are you kidding? Put it at the beginning, or end, just don't sabotage your own song like this, holy shit.
Anyway, I do like this quite a bit, more as a project and video than as a song itself. I do thank it for introducing me to Adriana Figueroa, who does some incredible vocal covers of songs from games and shows.

33. Springtime for Hitler
Source: The Producers
Villain: Adolf Hitler
Nominator: redrocket (1 left)
Favorite lyric: We're marching to a faster pace / Look out, here comes the master race

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HPXHRX8Q2hs

Villainy: 8
Characterization: 6
Melody: 6
Total: 20/30

What's a surefire way to get a high score in Villainy in a villain song ranking? Nominate a song about Hitler, of course! It feels weird giving any less than a 10 tbh, given that it's, ya know, Hitler and all. But this is also obviously not a song to be taken seriously, and (thankfully) goes more into the general war instead of going into the whole genocide thing (which is more villainous but also a lot less funny). Ultimately, that's what this song is going for. It's one of the thousands of Hitler parodies, and it's pretty decent at both poking fun at the ridiculous idol worship of Nazi fascism while also being a catchy enough song.

Indeed! I was bracing for elimination from the moment Still Alive dropped. There's not a lot of villain songs I actually have experience with and so would want to nominate (also why I haven't commented much), so I was content with just the one (forgetting Actual Cannibal Shia LaBeouf, naturally).

And yeah, I (unsurprisingly) agree with Ermine and Great Paul about Want You Gone vs. Still Alive.

32. Gold
Source: Repo! The Genetic Opera

Nominator: redrocket (ELIMINATED)
Favorite lyric: But before I go my kids will know about the man the have crossed / As Marni did the day she fled and became Nathans wife

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l3USff2ITpc

Villainy: 7
Characterization: 8
Melody: 5
Total: 20/30

I'm a pretty big fan of Repo!, and while there's a ton of songs on that soundtrack I adore, this has never fully been one of them. It definitely gets better as it goes on, with Rotti's vocals sounding pretty weak until he hits that octave change around halfway through and you can really hear how impressive his operatic vocal abilities really are. Rotti as a character is someone mostly irredeemable; he only cares about his wealth and nothing else holds any significance, including his children. What makes this song interesting is the direction it takes in the end, with Rotti recognizing he doesn't have long to live and, realizing that he can't take his wealth with him, wanting to give it to a proper heir who "deserves" it. While he's not the MOST evil on this list, he's a rotten fucking guy, not hesitant to destroy anyone who crosses him, much like Marni.

31. Philistine
Source: No More Heroes 2
Villain: Margaret Moonlight
Nominator: NFUN (ELIMINATED)
Favorite lyric: You think the fire in your eyes makes you a tiger in disguise? / Dream on, you goddamn pussy!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JNM5mFQ9siI

Villainy: 9
Characterization: 8
Melody: 3
Total: 20/30

I really, really wish I could say I liked this song more than I actually do, because I love Margaret Moonlight as a villain (really, the thing No More Heroes probably does best is just its awesome boss characters). It's a shame the official version of the song doesn't start with the creepy whistle she does at the beginning of her actual boss fight, because that definitely adds to it.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yq2XMX1x8j8

Something about the vocals though... I don't think the singer's bad, but the pacing of the lyrics just fits so awkwardly with the structure of the chords, almost like the lyrics were written without taking into consideration how they were actually supposed to fit into the song. The rhyme scheme is picked up and dropped almost at random, there's no consistency to how long syllables are, it's just odd. And it's a shame, because otherwise, this is a great villain song. It's equal parts funny and evil, with MM basically being a way less passive agreessive and way more joyously cruel GLaDOS. She's not hinting that Travis is adopted; she's outright making fun of him for being an otaku and a wannabe badass, while at the same time enthusiastically singing about how much she loves to murder people. Interesting that the American version got nominated; the Japanese version (which is still in English) probably would've scored about the same though. The backing music is better in the JP one, but the vocals are turned considerably worse

Nah the timing is definitely a little weird; the lyrics are often a little too long for the lines so they blend together. It doesn't bother me to hear, just drives me insane when i try to sing it, and for the most part the way syllables are stretched into iambs matches the beat very closely

So this is about Zargothax (thanks Genius.com), an evil wizard asking the Goblin King to help him *checking notes* kill all life in the universe. Well, guess I can't argue with that, that's 10/10 evil no matter how you cut it. Unfortunately, this song was more in the average range in every other category. Power metal isn't something I've ever been super into, but it's usually enjoyable in small doses. I just feel like a lot of it tends to kinda sound the same, and this song isn't really the exception. It's fun, but doesn't stand out. There's definitely a little bit of lore squeezed into the song, but I still don't really know who either The Goblin King or Zargothax are. Zargothax wants to destroy the universe... because? And the Goblin King is... also there?

Ok, I don't keep up with wrestling anymore like I did as a teenager, but I'm still a sucker for a good entrance theme (Favorite goes to Motorhead's "Line In The Sand"). Voices is super edgy and melodramatic, which is simultaneously both cringy but also very fitting for a wrestling heel's theme song. It's got the punch where once you hear "I HEAR VOICES IN MY HEAD" you just know "oh, here comes this asshole." It's not super deep, but it's catchy as all hell. It's also surprisingly effective as a villain song. While it doesn't outright give villainous plans like many songs, there's a really sinister monologue going on here. He expresses disdain for everyone, and I mean everyone, and puntuates it by saying the voices "tell me things I'll do to you." It's a little cheesy, but definitely does a good job capturing the perspective of the society-hating loner. Really just a great choice for the given scenario.

28. The Mob Song
Source: Beauty and the Beast 2017
Villain: Gaston and the Mob
Nominator: Great Paul (2 left)
Favorite lyric: We don't like what we don't understand, in fact it scares us / And this monster is mysterious at least

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4nEiNxr4NpQ

Villainy: 7
Characterization: 7
Melody: 6
Total: 20/30

So overall, I don't think The Mob Song is necessarily a better song than Gaston. Gaston is catchier, funny and more fun to sing along to. What The Mob Song is is a better villain song. This isn't Gaston hanging out in a bar, soaking up praises while being a cocky jerk; this is Gaston using his popularity and influence in the town to stir a bunch of desperately frightened locals into a murderous riot. To my surprise, this version of the song did that a good bit better than the original, adding some really nice extra lines to make this song less of an afterthought, like LeFou's "There's a beast running wild, there's no question. But I fear the wrong monster's released." You really get a sense of not just Gaston here, but everyone around him. Gaston isn't the dummy that could barely read a book, he's directly and maliciously manipulating people for his own horrible purposes.

Villainy: 2
Characterization: 8
Melody: 10
Total: 20/30

I had never heard this song prior to this ranking, and I'm really glad I finally have. Much, much earlier in this contest many were surprised to see Double Trouble do so poorly, and I admit, it was hard myself knocking a song that had such a strong nostalgia factor backing it up, but after hearing Rocket-dan Danka, the quality gap between the two is unmistakable. Even without the English voice actors I've come to know and love, RDD perfectly captures the personalities of Jessie, James and Meowth, and even squeezes in Wobbuffet's little pop-ins. The lyrics are hilarious, and the song just kinda rocks. It sounds victorious, thrilling, and just a little heavy; it's everything Team Rocket wants to be. It covers the recurring story of the team, chasing down Pikachu and ultimately "blasting off again" but never giving up. It's not particularly evil, because it's really more silly than anything else, which again, is perfectly fitting for Team Rocket.
