All of the characters that did well with Smash boosts were from series and games that people actually care about at their core. Animal Crossing is way below the Kirby or DK series on the totem pole, and we saw Isabelle's game in the 2015 contest get blown the fuck out by Mario World.

On top of that, X is a Super Nintendo legend with his stronger predecessor actually in Smash, so whatever boost Isabelle got was going to be nullified here.

Truth be told, I feel Smash Ultimate itself put out its very best hype videos during the first half from its reveal to its release, with announcements like Ridley, K. Rool and Simon, as well as improvements to its gameplay, which then kept people's expectations high (including mine). But then came stuff like Isabelle and Incineroar (which both were far less wanted), the Vergeben Leak and Box Theory becoming true, the poor online and the amount of missing features from previous games, and I can understand why people had high expectations and then were a bit disappointed, especially with a title like "Ultimate".

And to be honest, while I find Smash Ultimate the best game in the series, especially gameplay-wise, at the same time this is the only game in the series that actually disappointed me somewhat. Ultimate has definitely the best gameplay and an amazing quantity of playable characters, stages and settings, but I strongly prefer Brawl's and 4's extras.

Geno is the type of niche character that can take down casualbait fodder, but otherwise needs to have an equally niche opponent. Vyse, our former fodder line, finally got his win against Laharl, who in turn got his against Neku. In both cases, the larger niche won out. We all thought we could follow patterns and picked Neku to win his first match in 2013, but for once, the age of this website backfired on the older character. Sure, Neku easily pasted the casualbait, but against the actual threat, well, apparently Atlus/2011 > Square Enix/2008. LUL Squeenix, all hail Atlus.

Yeah, because first installment always wins, and those twits at Camelot decided to break the first game into two separate games. If they had crammed both games into a single cartridge somehow, Felix would rightfully be the strongest of the heroes, as the one that is "main" for longer, and I wouldn't doubt that the Proxian rogues gallery of antiheroes would get a rep, maybe Saturos.

CAMELOT! GET OFF YOUR FAT ASSES AND GIVE US THE FOURTH GAME! And make it less like the third game, more like the first two. Farming an RNG is fun.

It was almost the same exact percentages and the same exact trends, too. It was freaking eerie, and it kind of showed how off Sephiroth would be for this entire contest. Division 8 in general was the oddball division, and I feel like Allen did this intentionally to make sure Sephiroth would end up in the Noble Nine's group post-contest instead of just totally snubbing him. With the way this bracket was set up, either legends were waiting for every division winner in a double elimination bracket. This meant one had to be left out, which ended up being Sephiroth.

We only needed eight for the double elimination bracket and Sephiroth was the most obvious cut since Final Fantasy VII already has a more popular rep in Cloud. You can share this with anyone since it's not a big secret and I'm sure plenty of people figured it out on their own.

So there you go. But Allen was smart about this and made Sephiroth's division hilariously weak to make sure he won it. Only two threats were possible, a rallied Draven or Seph being so weak now that Ryu would beat him with a Smash boost. Seph would end up really weak this contest compared to what he was, but he's not that weak. Not yet, anyway.

I would love to see a Seph vs Kefka match just to see where Wesker actually stands. Wesker got such a raw deal in this contest. I'm sure Seph is stronger than Kefka, but both of them having identical matches with the guy is just weird.

It's too bad Kefka utterly failed to replicate his 2013 performance so it probably wouldn't be much of a match but Kekfa's ridiculous board vote vs. Sephiroth's terrible one might let him contend until the freeze even then! I know it's a trailer for Simon, but Richter was just randomly thrown in there and it shocked everyone. He actually got a higher seed than Simon in this contest, if you can believe that. That trailer even got Alucard a ton of run. And here I am feeling like the odd one out, because fuck Richter Belmont. @KanzarisKelshen and I keep struggling to figure out why I hate games like The World Ends With You, Shadow of the Colossus, the Gwendolyn path of Odin Sphere, and so on. I've finally figured it out. If a character handles like fucking garbage, I'm done with them. It's why Richter Belmont can fuck right off. He's winning me back over in Smash but good hell is he ass in Castlevania. I recently got the platinum trophy in the Rondo of Blood + Symphony of the Night PS4 port, which means I had to suffer through this asshole's garbage-ass handling. Twice. I at least sort of understand why Simon handles like shit. It was the NES. You get a half pass for being on such a weird system. But Richter? Nope.

In Rondo of Blood, my first goal was to unlock Maria Renard ASAP and just get the 100% as her, because Richter fucking sucks. That game was in no way designed for him to do well. At least Maria gets a double jump and weapons that can actually handle the game, bad as it is with you dying in 1-3 hits to literally anything and having such trash level design. Rondo is complete and utter sewage, but playing as Maria makes it sort of bearable with her handling ability.

Then you play through Symphony of the Night and have a total blast with Alucard while Richter is sitting there letting Shaft do whatever he wants like the little punk that he is. Alucard has to bail his sorry ass out, twice, and it's no big deal. And my reward for clearing everything as Alucard? Having to beat the game with this useless garbage and dealing with all the same issues from Rondo of Blood. Hey Konami, bad handling, bad move inputs, and dying to anything in 1-3 hits wasn't fun the first time. Why the fuck would you not learn from your mistake? Richter's handling is absolute shit, his HP is shit, his move inputs are embarrassing, and his actual character is complete dick. At least Simon, for having similar handling problems, is modeled after Conan the Barbarian. Simon is a man's man. Richter is an idiot.

Do not let this video fool you. These inputs are Virtua Fighter tier of bullshit and I am 100% convinced this guy modded his controller or hacked the game for simpler inputs or something. There is just no way. We can't just have a simple hadouken motion for dash, oh no. Gotta have us hit up first for some dumb reason. Can't have high jump be dragon punch, oh no. Gotta hit down then up then jump. Dumb.

It eventually does, but by that time, I had it down to a reasonable fight I could take on and win (especially since I could still use Down B to reflect if need be). Also, I think I had a boost on his neutral B and Metal Killer, so I was tearing through the metal Mega Mans very quickly.

Also Richter has one of the best controls in gaming in SotN. Like that is literally half the reason I like him so much. You're just bad at controlling him. I've beaten that game with no damage without using any item crashes, full clear on all bosses. He handles superbly, and he has enough moves with limited invincibility frames that zip him around the arena that if you're good you can basically dodge everything while keeping an attack going. He's fine in Rondo of Blood too.

Really the only game he doesn't control well is DRACULA X which basically makes him a watered down Simon which is not what he should be.

I'm terrible at inputs but I'm pretty sure I can record myself blazing through SotN with him.

Like I've put probably 5x as much time into SotN's Richter Mode as I've put into Alucard mode, just doing wacky challenges because he's so fun to control. And I've probably put more into Alucard mode than most people have put into the game. Heck I've beaten the game as Alucart. You're completely talking out of your ass there. You probably face tank a lot of shit when you play the game and get frustrated because compared to Alucard Richter's durability is paper, but who cares when you can just dodge everything anyway.

From what I remember you just need to get HP Ups with richter to increase his health, and that's really easy to do with a screen wiping move that kills everything except galamoth (hydro storm) and the ability to go anywhere you want right from the start

His blade dashing is ass on the 360 controller but I don't see how it could be a problem with a PS controller's D-pad. Those things consistently have the best d-pads of any controller out there.

I haven't played RoB so I can't comment on anything from that game <_<

Well even with HP Ups Richter's still paper compared to Alucard. I don't think he can survive more than a few hits in the inverted castle even if you get every HP Up.

But I've full cleared the game as Richter without getting hit so I mean, you definitely don't have to get them. Richter has all the tools to dodge literally everything that comes at him with his dash, slide, and uppercut, while tearing through the game at breakneck speed.

But I could definitely see getting hit by like 3 attacks because you are bad at the game, dying, and blaming it on his control as something to do. You'd get hit by those 3 attacks as Alucard too mind you but you'd survive and wouldn't be as upset since Alucard has actual gear he can equip.

FWIW, Hollow Knight has bar none the best controls in any Metroidvania...but Richter would be a top 3 pick for sure. Like compare with say, the Axiom Verge MC and it's no contest imo.

Dante and X-Box Ryu Hayabusa are the only two that come close to being as satisfying to use for me. Definitely my favorite to use as far as 2D controls go. I'm not saying everyone has to agree with this outright but if you say he controls poorly I'm inclined to think you just get hit and want to blame it on the control. If you're good with Richter you will never get hit. Straight up. There is no blaming the control there.

And hell don't mistake this as elitism because you don't even have to be that good with him if you're liberal with item crashes. Like I'm not even saying Richter Mode is challenging because if you abuse the hell out of those you can clear it in quite literally a few minutes, but for someone like me who wants to test the limits of the character and stuff because he enjoys playing him, being able to dodge literally any attack in the game is very satisfying.

Weird, our hands are similar size and I had no issues. I think I have leaner fingers though. That might be the issue - stocky thumb probably makes controlling him harder.

How does Richter handle badly in Rondo? It's basically NES Simon but with a backflip and the ability to moonwalk. Sure he has awkward jumping and throwing stuff on the stairs is hard, but I don't see how that qualifies him as the worst controls in gaming. Nowhere near as nice as the SCV4 controls, but still very serviceable.

The actual jumps werent the issue. Ive been dealing with that crap for 30 years. Its the dash. Remove the initial up input and were good.

...Bleh. I havent played Symphony of the Night. I keep hearing good things about it (most especially how it won /v/GAs Best Game of 1997) but Im just too much of a lazy jackass to emulate Playstation games after living my whole life playing Nintendo and their emulators.
