Second best Zelda ever. Between the second and fourth best game ever. I haven't totally decided on where to place it between Chrono Trigger.

My first thought is it missed just enough to not top CT. However, I do believe it is better than ALttP and ALBW, so it doesn't fall below those.

This also very sadly knocks Final Fantasy IX out of the top 5, and even sadder, SMW out of the top 10.....

Severely flawed, missing lots of Zelda stuff. If you've hated Zelda for decades or never played an open world game before you might love it.

Oh the concensus is that it's the best game ever made.

The dungeons are weaker than normal Zelda dungeons, and the bosses are much less interesting.

No. Some may like it, but it's far removed from the elements that made me love the games. This is the biggest problem, honestly. I'm really worried about the future of the series.

Most people I've talked to online and irl who love BOTW don't really like Zelda, except maybe OOT due to nostalgia. But this one drops the dungeons, item progression, story, "backtracking" and such so I guess it appeals to more people.

Best Zelda. MM and Oracles games are strong runner ups.

And I'm someone who enjoys Zelda games quite a bit.

Weakest point were the bosses though (and dungeons to an extent), but everything else I enjoyed heavily.

Still a toss up whether I liked this or Majora's Mask more as my favorite in the series

definite GotY unless something even more mindblowing comes along

Even Persona 5 which was another great Persona game was a noticeable tier lower than what Zelda had achieved as a video game.

My favorite Zelda. My ranking right now:

BotW > OoT = MM > LoZ >= SS > WW > TP

anything that isn't ranked I haven't beaten yet, but the bottom three might change once I play through them again. I feel like I can appreciate WW and TP a lot more and SS less now.

Honestly, BotW is really what's gotten me back into modern gaming again, for the first time in around 10 years. In my top 5 of all time.

Also I think the Zelda fans who don't like the change of direction are in the vocal minority.

It's hard for me to really rank it as a "Zelda" game because it's not really one, buuuut it's a total blast. Easily in the top 3 Zelda series and that isn't even a question.

Only thing I miss though is specific equipments. I liked early in how you could find Korok leaves that puff out air and I was hoping for more items like that. Hookshot is my greatest Zelda love after all.

I played with my daughter watching on for most of the adventure. She checked out after I beat the game about 60 hours in. The step kids have been happy to watch the next 40 hours of shrine hunting and all that stuff. I'd say it takes the tired Zelda formula elements and keeps them bite sized while delivering on old school Zelda goodness. It's a good open world but you don't have to wander off the beaten path, really.

If you like the dungeon formula that started in LTTP and grew from there, BOTW doesn't really scratch that itch. But I bet if you play with your kids, the night you get to the volcano is a big one 😀

I like Zelda but I don't love it. I probably wouldn't rank any Zelda in my top 50, but I do think Zelda 1 is amazing for its time and everything I've heard about BOTW is that it's the evolutionary Zelda 1. that sounds appealing.

yep, that's been one of the big draws for me. It's scratching some of the same itch that Mario Maker did. just a fun, welcoming, collaborative experience.

early on my niece and nephew made an agreement where they'd pass off their game when they died. my nephew ran headfirst into encounter after encounter, dying in like five minutes. my niece grabbed the Twilight Link amiibo to summon wolf Link and spent the next hour just stomping all over Hyrule. clever girl

I love Zelda. I have at times ranked LttP as my favorite video game, and OoT, TP, WW, and SS are all games I'd say I love. I often don't like open world games (Elder Scrolls is trash, GTA not much better), other than Xenoblade X, which I loved. BotW is amazing. It's the best 3D Zelda game, and my favorite game of the year so far (a statement that actually means something, since I've played a significant number of 2017 games, though I usually don't!). I played the game ~100 hours and loved pretty much all of it. The dungeons and bosses could've been better, I guess, but even they did some really neat things and I liked every one of them. A remarkable achievement.

This is not true. I heard it was an open world Zelda, and was very worried that I wouldn't like it because of this. I got it because of the good reviews, and because I love Zelda so much, but I didn't even play it for a couple weeks because of my worries. The game is definitely what convinced me to like it.

Excellent game, and if nothing else, I think it's good that Nintendo was willing to go out of its comfort zone with Zelda here. Top 2 Zelda with MM for me. I have no real attachment to the "Zelda formula" though so maybe that helps? Definitely has some flaws you can't miss (dungeons is the biggest one.)

transience posted...

Um, IIRC, we broadly agree about P3/P4 so I think the safer pick for you would be Persona 5. Persona 5 has its own flaws and I think P3 still reigns as the best of that Persona trio, but Persona 5 isn't that far behind.

I mean, I think consensus will look back and say BotW is the more "must play" game but I think that's largely because it's simply the bigger game (Nintendo, Zelda, etc.) whereas Persona 5 is still essentially the same Persona formula from 3/4.

Also, the Master Sword is fucking pathetic in this game. Look, I know you have the whole weapon durability system (which I actually find neat), but it necessitates that the Master Sword is pitiful. I've abandoned it for a good while now, but I was quite impressed by it. There's a sense of scale that doesn't feel pointless even with a large amount of empty space. It feels like an adventure. Good combat too. It can actually force you to strategize how to take outposts and such.

... It's really not tho. In dungeons at least, 60 power is great. Having an unbreakable sword at full power available for use everywhere would be terrible though so I love how the MS is handled. Even then, 30 power is perfectly usable as weapon that you don't have to worry about wasting so I still use it in the field too whenever.
