Also, the Master Sword is fucking pathetic in this game. Look, I know you have the whole weapon durability system (which I actually find neat), but it necessitates that the Master Sword is pitiful. If the the permanent upgraded-state from the new dlc dungeon doesn't also make it unbreakable, it will probably be my biggest complaint with the game.

... It's really not tho. In dungeons at least, 60 power is great. Having an unbreakable sword at full power available for use everywhere would be terrible though so I love how the MS is handled. Even then, 30 power is perfectly usable as weapon that you don't have to worry about wasting so I still use it in the field too whenever.

Also, don't forget damage per second, the attack rating of a weapon is not its DPS: I looked around for data a while ago and I believe the 60dmg Master Sword has the highest melee DPS in the game, or maybe tied for it, and the 30dmg Master Sword is pretty high up there too, although not the best.

More honest answer: the sense of discovery in this game is the most enchanting I've ever experienced in a video game. The only other that's really rivaled it is Xenoblade Chronicles, and I think you know how much I love that game. The world is huge, and there's always something in the distance that catches your eye and makes you want to adventure a little further.

Apart from the older GTAs, I've never really played open world games, so I don't know how the exploration and sense of freedom in this game compare to something like Just Cause or Skyrim, though I was immediately drawn in and engaged for 100+ hours.

Also, as icon and neon have commented, this game is like honey for kids and even non-gamers. It's just so pretty and - I dunno... "organic," that they're naturally drawn to it. My girlfriend never games and hates it when I boot up Bloodborne, but she enjoyed all the time I sunk into BotW because of its sheer beauty and all the quirky charm Nintendo dumped in.

I don't really think it's that much like Xenoblade

It's maybe somewhat like X in some ways, but it feels less....big. That's a good thing, I thought X was overly large and padded. BotW still feels huge. You have much more freedom in BotW than either game though.

As for how I actually feel about the game, dunno, still haven't finished it. I get the impression that by the end of it, it'll be a game that I appreciate more than I actually like. Open worlds just aren't really my jam, but this game does them so well that even I can appreciate them....but I feel like by the end of the game I'll get tired of the lack of direction/linearity.

If the Switch looks worth buying I might play it eventually. Don't own a Wii U and it's dead anyways so Switch would have to have quite a few games I'm interested in and not end up a dud system they phase out quickly for me to get it. If I did magically get a Switch and the game immediately I would still probably hold off because Witcher 3 has basically filled the exploration quota for like a year for me. That game is so damn huge and I'm still not quite done with it. Think I've put 200 or so hours into it now counting the DLC.

Yeah, but there's hardly anything to fight in dungeons other than the boss, and when you're regularly picking up Royal broadswords with at minimum 6 more attack, it just feels kinda pathetic for what's supposed to be the strongest weapon in the series.

Absolutely love the game, but I'm a person who likes the minutia of collecting. From what I gather from others, the exploration, shrine-hunting, etc is still plenty enough to reel in people and provide an amazing adventure experience. Also adds a few amazing tracks to the Zelda repertoire, such as the slow version of Dragon Roost, the Korok Forest song, the battle music, Stone Talus boss music, etc...

As long as Nintendo doesn't go stupid and design the next Zelda to be the same, I'll be happy.

I think the game would be perfect if it had 5-7 traditional-style Zelda dungeons sprinkled throughout, in addition to the shrines and divine beasts.

As it is, it's a great game, but feels like it's missing the Zelda feel.

Oh, and since I feel you're a guy who enjoys "clever" gameplay, I think you'll appreciate how this game approaches puzzles. It abandons the traditional Zelda philosophy of "one puzzle, one solution" - generally in older Zeldas, you have one item or mechanic that solves a given puzzle. There are no two ways about most things. In BotW, I'm pretty sure every puzzle has multiple solutions, including ingenious ones (YouTube!) that obliterate the games surprisingly impressive physics engine without relying on glitches.

I don't know if I'd agree with that comparison, but yeah, the reason you don't continue down the path is because Zelda works best when the games are significantly different. And they can go back to dungeons just fine, they just have to visit them intelligently. The 3D Zeldas haven't had particularly complex dungeon design aside from the Water Temple.

That'd be a great direction to go if they choose to stick to this style - apply the openness of the BotW world to dungeons.

Weapons degrading is great, just stop being attached to everything you pick up - it's incredibly easy to get whatever you want again since it all respawns. If weapons didn't degrade then it'd all be worthless, the way things are you can find value in anything which is exactly what they're going for.

Hell part of me wishes they just put expiration dates on everything to force people out of this comfort-zone they have. Late-game you shouldn't be having any problems at all with good weapon supply

If you are looking for a Zelda game, I'd put it pretty low on the list. Not a favorite for me.

If you are looking for something like Syrim done in a Zelda style, it's probably a great game for you.

Just for reference, my top 5 Zeldas are (in no particular order):

2. Wind Waker

4. ALttP

No, lots of games such as Darksiders 2 (a Zelda clone) show how to make garbage loot feel super valuable all the time. BOTW commoditizes weapons so much that they are all equally worthless and soulless. Finding a badass fire sword is like finding an apple in a tree.
