watched this over the weekend. I like the practical effects and the realness of it.

Story wise, it's the perfect combination of military propaganda and adolescent male fantasy. I feel like it's the first time in a while a movie has been so obvious and upfront in its intentions to purposefully fail the Bechdel test and uplift a white male hero without any sort of subtlety or character flaws, so I'm not surprised a bunch of men's rights activists and magats are into it. I'm not surprised it's making a gazillion dollars.

The question is if other blockbusters are going to follow suit. I think probably.

I'm not playing along with the ranking but I do think this is the first time I've seen an album I would legitimately describe as "bad" being included.

My hot take is that Avengers 1 is extremely overrated. The New York battle is great, but the first half fares worse, and I think the beginning is extremely rough. The entire beginning with Fury/Hill/Evil Hawkeye sucks and I don't go for Loki and Cap's cheesy as hell kneel scene.

Whedon definitely does a good BW, and I like his Hulk but I think everyone else's dialogue is annoyingly "Whedon-ed" (this is admittedly much worse in AoU).

Everything in New York (and the Helicarrier too) is pretty good, which is half the movie, so it's still by and large an upper-tier MCU flick, but I don't think it's better than Iron Man. It's about the same level as Cap 1 and I'm not sure which is better. It's only overrated because many people still consider this to be the best MCU movie and that is WILD to me.

Also Cap looks bad in this one.

I will say the way the film very quickly and unfairly makes Wanda evil is extremely faithful to the comics, so there's that

Wanda was certainly not reformed or anything at the end of WV, but she also wasn't as blatantly corrupted evil as she was in MoM. If anything, she was a complicated character trying to deal with her trauma rather than someone who had given herself up to it. The main thing here is that Wanda in MoM isn't complicated. She's basically magician can't handle emotions/ her powers are too great/ she goes evil cliche.

What *REALLY* caused this is production timing. MoM went into production with this idea of making Wanda the villain, and at the time they clearly did not know how well WandaVision was going to turn out and how cathartic and endearing her story of grief would be. WandaVision *could* have gone a different way and ended with Wanda on a more villainous path - the pieces were all there. That may be why they ended it the way they did with her leaving. But that's really not at all the story they told or the person they built her up to be. The reason there is such a gigantic disconnect between MoM and WandaVision is because they took two completely different approaches to writing her and did not put in the time and effort to get these lined up.

Many people (myself included) raised this point. I'd say the supposed mischaracterization of Wanda is one of the major complaints (second only to maybe turning the Illuminati into jobbers).

That's what happens when you go from well-established characters in a straightforward series of movies to adding even more movies per year with multiple tv shows all featuring less well-known characters.Things are being written and worked on at the same time with only a loose idea of a bigger picture, as opposed to earlier Phases when everything had a single end point (endgame).

Yeah IW is the best one. The thing about Phase 4 is that I'm pretty sure most people aren't expecting every movie to be IW/Endgame quality now. They just want there to be some tension/build up to something else. Hence why, in my anecdotal experience, the most well-received stuff seemed to be whatever was building to the multiverse storyline (mostly Loki and MoM). Even though I personally still think Hawkeye is the best Phase 4 production, because if I was running things, the next big project would've been New/Young Avengers against a smaller-scale global threat instead of the multiverse arc.

The whole comparison between League of Extraordinary Gentlemen and the Avengers doesn't make sense. They're both super teams, but League isn't the end product of a shared universe. The closest thing to this pre Avengers is more like, I don't know, Godzilla films, the Russell T. Davies Dr. Who seasons or Jay and Silent Bob or something.

Feels like this is going to be a hard sell. I asked my college students today how many people watched this and out of about 75 I got 1

1. Ant-Man wasn't mainstream relevant before the MCU to any remotely notable degree.
2. Among comic book nerds, which are a huge minority in and of themselves, he isn't vastly better known than Shang Chi.

1 is fine. 2 is what everyone is giving you a hard time about.

Putting aside Lopen's inexcusably stupid personal attack on scarlet, I believe the point being made was that to a COMPLETE COMICS CASUL, Ant-Man and Shang Chi are both unknowns and therefore "risks." I don't think this is completely wrong. However, I do think Ant-Man was as least somewhat in the public consciousness in that people were aware that he existed / could make an educated guess as to his power set.

for many comic fans during the 90's boom, I would wager their only real contact with Shang-Chi was a brief guest-starring arc in X-Men

If Ant-Man was B-list, Shang Chi was practically D-list.

I did follow up in that very post, mostly by pointing out that audiences won't just go to see any comic book movies no matter how crap they are like say Batman & Robin or Morbius, and how the previous closest attempts at making massive crossover events in the vein of The Avengers like The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen and Van Helsing weren't anywhere near as big. I also specifically pointed out that there is artistry in realizing comic book characters like Batman, Iron Man, and Captain America on the big screen and properly characterizing them.

Half my concern is how are Marvel movies any less cinema than, say, Jurassic Park?

so what specifically here has to do with Marvel's "non-story related ambition?" are you just talking about the crossover aspect as being ambitious? Cause that's story my friend

Not on the topic of She-Hulk, but I remembered another reason why I take issue with the whole "Marvel movies are not cinema" stance - even if the movies may not be ambitious in terms of story, they often display ambition in other ways. .

The most infuriating thing about your posts is that you make claims at the beginning that you never follow up on. How do Marvel Movies display ambition "in other ways?" Follow up on your thesis

It is literally "too dark" though, in that it is sometimes I feel like the backgrounds blend into either a beige or blue/gray blob

I think both IM2 and Thor2 are unfairly maligned. They're not great films but they're fun

TFA is, by design, a nostalgia-bait rehash meant to wipe the taste of the PT out of people's mouths. It accomplishes this well enough, but many of the scenes feel inconsequential as a result. Visually and aurally, it is fantastic and super fun, but it's paper thin and all set up.

TLJ is the best of the ST but the casino planet does not work and neither Finn nor Poe have interesting or satisfying character arcs.

ROS really has nothing going for it. TLJ deserves some of the "blame" for not setting it up well and them switching to JJ from Trevorrow doesn't help either. All SW movies are to some degree childish and nonsensical, but this film constantly jumps the shark in new and unfun ways.

i think it's fair to have legitimate concerns over the ST. it sucks for reasons far beyond whatever dumb identity politic complaints you traffic in
