Closest neighbors out of site, at least 20 minutes outside of town. Rough, hilly surroundings. Running water nearby. Brisk mountain air, baby. Maybe get a dog.

Just live there and chill, bills paid, no job. Learn to fish, experiment with all sorts of recipes. Learn how to do home improvement stuff on my own, make a fun entertainment room

Get up and go to bed when I feel like. It's such a nice dream

I'm about halfway there. I live in a rural town in a neighborhood that's very out of the way (and hard to find without a map since we are smack dab in the middle of three lakes and a nature conservation). But we are still only 40 minutes away from a major city.

But it's still an HOA neighborhood, so while the region is rural, the neighborhood itself is suburban. I'm saving up to buy some acreage of land further out for my wife, me, and the pups and cats.

Most of the things we do for fun anyways are either nature-related or virtual, so the lifestyle doesn't bother us. I've always hated city life.

This is basically how I've lived for the last 10 years. Bought a small house on 10 acres when it was foreclosed and got a great deal on it. My closest neighbor is nearly a mile away, and it's a 10 minute drive into the tiny town that's basically a police station, churches, 3 restaurants, a small grocery store and a dollar general. I'm on top of the mountain here, good fishing river 10 minutes up the road, the closest Walmart and real civilization is about 20 miles away.

I fish, farm, raise chickens, target shoot with my rifle and my bow. 90% of my land is just woods. I love the life here, even though a lot of people that live around here are trash.

I see deer daily which is cool too, especially in summer when they have babies and they are clumsy and trip over stuff when they run.

There are a lot of little things I think you take for granted about living in the city/suburbs that you're going to hate if you go rural. For example, think of how annoying it is when you can't find something you want at the store (especially a grocery), but even then you have like five other stores in a small radius you can check out. In a rural area you might not even have a major grocery nearby, or any other kind of big box stores. I know it's easy to hate on big boxes but they're kinda necessary to get a lot of things now.

If you're really good at planning ahead then yeah, you can get a lot of stuff online, and just plan for fewer but larger trips to the grocery, but I like having the option to zip over to a store if I want something right away. Like, you don't gain any conveniences in that regard by living rural, you can still do 80% of your shopping online in the city too. And there are only so many foods that keep well in a fridge/freezer, a lot of produce is out of the question.

I have a good paying work at home job, and the mortgage is paid off so it's just utilities and internet and whatnot. There's a farmers market every weekend and I'll do some buying and trading there. We only really spend like $200 a month max on groceries, moreso in the winter for sure.

I mean you yourself come off as being lonely yet you want to do this, I don't know if it really is the right move. Sounds maybe like you're more of an extrovert trapped in an introvert lifestyle and trying to rationalize yourself further into it.

I've had the impulse too, you think "well I'm always alone anyway, might as well take full advantage and go somewhere even more isolated". But is that what you really want? Or do you want to make excuses for yourself not to improve your socialization?

That's why I wanna be relatively close to a small-ish town. When I say smallish I mean maybe 5-10k people. I think a town of that size would offer services enough to cover my needs

Plus I'm getting sick-ass VR which I legit think will help in terms of isolation

Look into stuff like security monitoring. Wife did that for a few years, and the job consisted of her sitting alone for a 6 hour shift watching 16 monitors for different car lots across the US. If you see someone wander on the private property, you call the local police in that area to check it out. If it resulted in an arrest she got a $200 bonus. It's a simple job and you work alone and security usually pays well.

It sounds nice, but if I ever move again it will not be to the mountains (too cold and too much snow). I grew up in Baton Rouge and my property was sort of remote. I had neighbors, but everyone had a few acres and kept to themselves. You could actually walk outside and shoot a gun without disturbing your neighbors.

That would make me mad but it sounds like you don't do much driving. I use my GPS everywhere I go even if I know the route just in case there's roadblocks or a wreck holding up traffic so I know ahead of time to find a new route. Also need to play my music and be able to call if I break down or get into a wreck. It would infuriate me not being able to use my phone until I'm 20 miles from home lol

I think people underestimate how expensive it is to live in a city.

Never eat out, never commute to work, never pay for streaming or tv, never pay for parking or concerts or anything. Your fun is free, some of your food is free. Housing is cheap. You also never sit in traffic or wait in line so you have a lot more free time to take classes or work on projects

So $100-$150/mo for food, $700 mortgage (half paid by your spouse), +insurances, no debt... You're looking at $700-$1000 every month in total costs

I always was accused of being a trust funder... I just live simply

I'd argue that the outdoor opportunities are much better, there are tons of parks you can visit and if you want to get away from people more then it isn't that far of a drive. If you want to go somewhere with ZERO people or shoot guns from your backyard then yeah you're SOL but there are going to be things you can do in one place and not the other. Nowhere has everything, but the city generally has much more, even if it sometimes costs money. I live within my means anyway so it really doesn't matter to me, what am I getting out of saving more? I'd rather enjoy life now in my relative physical prime than think about maximizing how I'm going to live when I'm like 70.

If you prefer the country life anyway more power to you but I think people should avoid the trappings of idealizing it cause many of them might well find it's not all it's cracked up to be.
