My only issue with that list is that he has both the original and subsistence/substance/whatever releases on it.

It doesnt though, Subsistence is the only one of those he lists because it actually changed the base game considerably. Substance was just extra stuff and Integral was just MGS + VR Missions in one package.

Secret of Mana. I've never been able to get around its combination of lag, ridiculous enemy invincibility frames, and enemy evasion making the basic combat feel like a slog. In a game that makes the player take time between hits if you want to do notable damage and has a charge-up mechanic that takes forever in order to discourage mashing the attack button and make individual attacks count, getting your attacks nullified or delayed due to the game being poorly designed and programmed and giving you poor feedback on what went wrong is really frustrating.

I think Tales of Phantasia and Star Ocean's battle systems have aged really poorly even compared to Eternia and Star Ocean 2. And they've basically both got generic SNES RPG plots that try a little or pretend to maybe be something different for a bit before pretty much giving up a few hours in and their characters generally aren't good either.

All of this is correct

The other main thing different in All-Stars I guess isn't really physics: the hitboxes on piranha plants are noticeably larger than in the original. So for example in 4-1 you have to be a lot more careful if you're trying to go full speed through the level. I think I have also heard something before about backwards jumping being different? Not exactly something you do often in the game though so w/e

I don't know one way or the other on this, but I wonder if the "rage mode" behavior of Hammer Bros is still present, since it never really showed up again after the 1 and Lost Levels anyway and might have been forgotten about. You could test this yourself; just let a Hammer Bro stay on screen for a very long time and eventually it will start to chase after you instead of pacing back and forth

some of the physics for SMB1 (and Lost Levels) are messed up in the All-Stars versions. For example, when you bump a breakable block from underneath, you get pulled up into the block's space slightly, which completely kills your horizontal momentum. In the real game you get pushed down faster instead.

so 4-3 is really the only one built around a specific character?

i'm pretty sure it wasn't built that way, they just didn't realize luigi could jump that far

The thing is that in Doki Doki Panic there was no run button, so in that game nobody could make that jump. When they added the run button in SMB2, they either didn't realize the skip was possible, or did and just decided to leave it in as a bonus. Other levels have intentional skips built into the design, so it fits right in with the rest.

Peach can also make that jump in 4-3 so no reason not to use her there

There are a few levels where being able to pick things up really fast is more useful than jumping skill, like if there is a spot where you could get a lot of coins in subspace. Take 1-2 for example, you can skip part of the level with Luigi or Peach but with Mario or Toad you can pick up more coins at the spot right after that skip.

WazzupGenius00

Neither Next Order nor Re:Digitize was as good as the original, mostly because they're so damn linear. Since there is much more of a narrative, events are required to happen in a certain order so there's little point in exploring anywhere but the place it tells you to go. And enemy strength progression is linear too, everything in the next required area will be stronger than whatever you just finished up. If your Digimon passes away the only way to progress is to re-train your Digimon until it's as strong or stronger than when it died. In the original there were other places you could go and things to do while still having a weaker Digimon; here the game actively pushes you toward playing in exactly the order they want.

Other aspects of the game are improved, like a fuller in-game explanation of digivolution requirements and better training options, but the core loop of exploring the world, raising the Digimon, and balancing your time and resources to do both is worse than before.

Brucer and Jackier are so much better than Hitmon

Now I'm curious what they call Hitmontop

The weird thing here is that he still did pretty major localization on those names. They're not named after Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan at all in Japan but rather a famous boxer and famous kickboxer. Hitmontop was named Kapoerer, derived from the fighting style capoeira. In the 3D pokemon games you can see Hitmontop doing the basic footwork of capoeira (as also seen with Elena in Street Fighter)

Wait, youre using Steam playerbase as your barometer for a fighting games engagement???

Its definitely the case that DBFZ took a lot of Marvels playerbase, but if you look at the tournament scene (and given were talking about Evo, a physical tournament, this is the best number to gauge participation) Marvel has either the second or third highest prereg number for most upcoming events. I definitely think that ultimately a lot will jump ship from Marvel to DBFZ, but I also think it will still have a larger presence in the scene than, say, Injustice 2 will this year.

Evo has a history of making deals with publishers behind the scenes for unreleased games, and Im guessing that ultimately Marvel wasnt willIng to make a deal with them but ASW convinced them to put BBTAG in. That year when they had the charity drive to determine the final game because there was only enough room for one, they added Injustice to the lineup a month after the fact despite it only raising like 200 dollars compared to Melee and Skullgirls 100K each. We got Tekken 7 twice when there was literally no way to play it anywhere outside of Japan and Korea. There is no logical way to justify those outside of money.

The thing is that INJ draws in a couple hundred folks who only play that game (and Mortal Kombat) and wouldnt otherwise come. Whereas a large portion of the MVCI audience will still be there for SFV and/or DBFZ anyway

Same with having both Melee and Smash 4, you get two fairly distinct crowds -> more money from entrance fees and spectators

I'm not that mad at MVCI not making it, but I am kinda annoyed about BBTAG

Releasing too close to the tournament, and looks to have the same issues people had with MVCI: mostly reused content, slim roster, and unappealing DLC scheme. Either MVCI or UNIST would have been more suitable picks.
