Regarding the weapons, there's a pretty significant portion (like one-third) of the first cartoon series where Michelangelo completely stops using nunchaku and starts using a grappling hook thing as a weapon instead so it's not like this is some cardinal sin either

I really need to see this in motion. The artstyle is such that it could actually look very good, or it could just be flash animated trash.

Don't care that much about altered personalities and weapons, there have been slight variations here and there throughout the franchise already, might as well take it a little further

Also Mirage Comics April O'Neil was supposed to be black originally according to Kevin Eastman

I've seen people in the arcade scene express distrust over a lot of the "old guard" arcade scores over the past few years. I believe the current Donkey Kong WR has legitimate witnesses though.

Even in speedrunning there have been multiple recent cases of runs getting exposed. One guy recently got exposed for playing prerecorded Yoshi's Island runs (which were likely tool-assisted) on stream with his controller cam on, and pretending he was running it live. He got caught because his controller inputs didn't match the screen at certain times.

Finished Iconoclasts. The gameplay was all pretty good, but I'm not so sure about the narrative. The setting was good, and the religious-political world that was set up, but I don't think I actually like many of the characters or what they do in the story.

There were some key items I never found uses for, so I suspect there may be a better ending of some sort or additional content I missed out on, sort of like Cave Story maybe. I'm also wondering if dialogue choices at certain points can affect things later. Unlike Cave Story though the game is too long for me to want to go through all of it again right away, especially if it turns out that nothing substantial changes anyway.

What is everyone's issue with Mega Man 7 anyway? Just big sprites?

Character size in relationship to the environment is definitely part of it. Makes things so cramped. I think the musical compositions are nice, but I don't like the instrument samples used. That final boss is bullshit, also.

Sprite disappearing like that would suggest that somehow your TV is displaying the game at 30 frames per second while the game plays at 60. You see this a lot when you watch videos of old games (which all displayed 60fps) where the video is only displaying 30fps

The unpatched 3DS version of DQ8 had the symphonic version of the soundtrack replaced with the original midi tracks. From what I heard, the reason this was done was legitimately because the guy who composed the original soundtrack got upset and threw a fit.

The US version's soundtrack is midi, but it isn't the same as the JP PS2 version's midi, it was a new arrangement. Koichi Sugiyama the composer is pretty strict about retaining certain rights to the music he composes. He's actually a chairperson on one of Japan's major copyright administration groups for musicians. I assume he wants an additional license to be paid by Square-Enix USA separate from Square-Enix Japan for the symphonic recordings, and this is why VII and VIII didn't have them in the US. And if you ever played Dragon Quest Heroes (and maybe Builders had this too?), before you start playing for the first time you have to agree to all these extra rules regarding streaming of the game because of its music.

His strictness about this stuff is not the only thing that makes him an asshole. Check out the "political activities" section of his Wikipedia if you're curious

The point and click Erik the Viking was on a couple different computer platforms, yeah. It was based on the book but I think the NES game was based more on the movie version. The composer for it (his personal records are the only reason we have this music) says it was gonna be a Zelda-style RPG

A majority of NES games developed in Europe. Hard Mode: I'm only including one Tim Follin track.

(gotta love the woodblock sound on this one, which was not a sample!)

(this game never came out and no prototype is known to exist, but given that it was by Eurocom it probably would have sucked)

Iconoclasts is super charming. It's getting talked up a lot as a metroidvania but it's really not. It's a much more linear, focused experience, although individual levels have a wide design. The boss fights are great, too. I've done five and each one has been challenging in unique ways.

Expanding on the not-quite-Metroidvania designation, konjak specifically cites Metroid Fusion and Monster World IV as the inspirations, so that should give you an idea of how it works.

The most recent version on Switch adds platforms so that if you miss that near-pixel-perfect jump to skip the Booster, you can climb back up there and try again rather than having to reload the game.

But really your first time through you're not supposed to find any of that stuff.
