I guess in some ways you could say it executed what it sought out to do flawlessly

Whether that's something you want to be doing in a good video game is another thing entirely but

Spec Ops: The Line, Batman: Arkham Asylum

Spec Ops The Line had flawless execution of story but the gameplay was pretty generic war shooter fare. It's an amazing game but doesn't play particularly better than other shooters

Arkham Asylum was great, but City was better in almost every way aside from the lack of Scarecrow missions. In particular, I feel like it's generally considered that the final boss in Arkham Asylum is one of the weakest moments of the series.

The Last of Us

Sort of like Spec Ops, flawless execution of story, but gameplay wasn't incredible. It was mostly smooth but eventually it got to the point where the shooting was almost in the way of the story. It's the same reason I probably wouldn't put the Bioshock games in this category, even though they're my favorites.

Thumper

I really like the concept and most of the Thumper execution, but it gets really repetitive. In particular, it's a really weird choice to have literally no boss variation, with the same two bosses appearing in every level

I would argue that's part of the point.

I can't safely answer this because my favorite games are also games that were, for one reason or another, unable to perform to the vision the developers had in mind, especially due to executive meddling.

And the games that I do think are "perfectly executed" are not necessarily games I'm interested in.

I guess Shovel Knight actually fits nicely between these two extremes though.

Super Mario Bros. 3

Its why every 2d Mario game since then has essentially been like Mario 3 but with different powers and levels.

Ms. Pac-Man, Tetris, Mario 1, Mario 3, Zelda 1, Starcraft Brood War, Ocarina of Time, Undertale, Dark Souls, Bloodborne, Metroid Prime, Final Fantasy 6, Fire Emblem Path of Radiance, and Super Smash Bros. Melee are the only objectively perfect games.

So there have been no objectively perfect simulation, racing, fighting or sports games?

There are tons of games I have no issues with, but you can always find something.

Like Melee is definitely too unbalanced to be called perfect.

Tetris is probably the best answer so far.

Final Fantasy 6 is probably the most glaring entry to that list given that the Vanish/X-Zone trick exists. To say nothing about dumb glitches with sketch or anything about non-glitch related issues.

If we're taking glitches into account OoT doesn't belong anywhere near that list. You can warp from the first dungeon to the final area and beat the game in under 20 minutes, and that's just scratching the surface on what you can do to break the game.

Yeah I'm not even counting regular glitches into my accounts, just game-breaking ones, and if they've been fixed by patches, I don't count them.

I'm still frustrated because the devs I speak of encountered so much executive meddling that at one point the game's finale was almost completely cancelled until fan letters managed to convince the company to produce the game finally.

So the games weren't perfectly executed, because they were prevented from being perfectly executed.

Shovel Knight on the other hand is definitely a game I can safely say counts as "perfectly executed" despite not having played it because it does exactly what it sets out to do, and then turns around and does something I wish more games did - let you play as some of the awesome antagonists (even if it's DLC technically)

I honestly wouldn't count many glitches either but the vanish ones in FFVI are fairly easy to encounter in normal play and seriously screw with the game. Either by trivializing a ton of fights or by breaking it outright in the case of the sketch one.

Yeah Pokemon RBY is one of the most beloved games ever, but doesn't belong here at all because it's such a glitchy mess >_>.

You could say the same about GTA3, VC and SA, all of which were basically the very top of the industry when they came out and are excellent games, but they're also super glitchy and have pretty poor graphics even by mid-00s standards. I love all three of those games but I wouldn't consider them here. The glitches actually made the game more fun for the most part, but it kind of disqualifies them from being "perfectly executed".

Of course we can't really take "perfectly executed" literally, so I'm talking "as well-executed as you're likely to see anywhere"
