I just beat Donkey Kong Country on the GBC. That entire game was bullshit but I'm happy to have finally beaten a game again, it might be the only I've beaten this year. Scratch that, I'm pretty sure I beat MEA and Crystal (again) this year.

Anyway, backloggery fortune cookie drew me Dragon Quest IV. It'll be nice to play a classic jRPG again, although I just hope it doesn't bum me out like Shining Force II and The Witcher have done for me.

The nice thing about DQ4 is that the vignette structure should help prevent you from getting bored of it for a while. The final chapter might drag in some spots if you don't find the correct places to go, though.

The only thing about Gohans age that Ive been confused by is the timeline for meeting and then marrying Videl. Buus appearance was less than a year after they met, which was his first year in high school, right? Then they wish for bad memories of Buu to be erased six months later, and then the next episodes are supposed to be another few months after that, and in those episodes theyve just gotten married? Arent they still in high school for another year at least?

I just finished watching the Kai dub last week and I don't think he was ever actually called Kid Buu there, just Buu or Majin Buu. Super Buu did call himself Super Buu I believe, or it might have been in the name of an episode.

I think my least favorite part of the game is any time you have to fight two Unicorns (the first boss) at once. Pretty sure it is entirely luck-based whether you will get hit by one of them or not.

It plays pretty similarly to the old RPG Tsubasa games, with gacha pulls for players.

One nice thing is that you can instantly redo the forced tutorial pull until you get the player you want, even SSR rarity. (It's recommended you get either SSR Diaz or SSR Kaltz. I needed about twenty pulls to get SSR Kaltz, took only like three or four minutes.)

I was surprised at how long a match takes, given that it's a mobile game. You can speed up the matches if you put them on auto-play, but the AI isn't very smart and likes to just push the ball to the forwards ASAP and let them run out of stamina. You'll still win all the early Story missions if you do this but other modes or Raid matches will require more strategy.

Sorry to you Europeans and South Americans, even if you pick your language the game still uses the Japanese names for the players.

Maybe it's just because I am visually impaired, but the new craze of "Let's zoom out really wide" doesn't sit well with me. DKR and Tropical Freeze did this, as an example. Outside of Sonic Mania, it seems like every platformer revival has taken the view away from the characters I'm controlling in favor of, "OOH LOOK AT OUR PRETTY BACKDROP!" It's harder to see both player characters and enemies, I can't get a grasp of things on screen as well, and I just feel games just look "slower" in comparison. Maybe seeing death pits coming is nice...but that's the only positive.

Does anyone know why this became a thing? Does it have to do with HD TVs or aspect ratios or whatever?

The world record speedrun for it isn't quite as exciting since you can just reset over and over until you get favorable drops, but I love watching speedrun races of Batman for NES. Many time-saving tricks involve either losing health or spending ammo so in a race you have to judge which strategies are worth spending resources on and which to hold off on so you don't run out. And bosses are tough enough to be climactic turning points.

Of the bigger name speedruns I only really care about SM64 and Yoshi's Island. ZZZzzzZZzzelda speedruns no thanks (randomizers excepting)

Final Fantasy - I watched my cousin play a lot of 7 but 8 was the first I had
Pokemon - Blue
Tales - Phantasia
Persona - 3 Portable
SMT - Kyuuyaku Megami Tensei 1
Dragon Quest - I owned 1 but the battery didn't work (handed down from a cousin) so I only ever played it for like ten minutes. First I really played was 4
Fire Emblem* - Sacred Stones/FE8
JRPG not listed here - okay so technically I think the answer would be the Japanese-developed port of Ultima Exodus for NES but that doesn't really count. Real answer is likely Breath of Fire IV

boss fight you thought was hard - It's not even really a boss fight though it is mandatory, but in DQ4 early chapter 5 when you go to that cave with Maya and Meena(Mara and Nara) and monsters pretend to be them and then you have to fight them, that was a tough fight to do solo without some grinding
JRPG you gave up on...
because it was bad - Tales of Phantasia and I have never touched the series since
for another reason - Legend of Legaia, pretty sure I or my brother saved in a place you couldn't leave before beating the boss, and couldn't buy more healing either. Though we were also dumb so it may have been escapable in some way
full party - I think I rolled with Hero/Ragnar/Alena/Meena(Nara) in DQ4 the first time, though with that party I definitely would have needed to swap people now and then
hated character - He was fine in his own chapter but once the AI took over for him Kiryl(Cristo) was terrible for well-documented reasons
loved character - Alena the punching princess was probably the first subversion of damsel in distress stuff I came across in medieval fantasy
"WOW" moment (battle/gameplay) - Solving the puzzles of Ultimecia's Castle and re-earning all your abilities
"WOW" moment (story) - Chrono Trigger - I think I go back and forth between either Lavos killing Crono, or Crono being resurrected. You might notice from my responses that I skipped from NES to PS1 and the story of CT remained unspoiled for me in that time. This was a good surprise.

you had to have it to make the boss appear, otherwise the level looped when you got to the end. You could buy it or find it hidden somewhere in the level by shooting at random spots
