Smash 4 also has a very high number of entrants and stream viewership which makes it hard to cut. SSBM and SSB4 are both very popular and neither one is way more popular than the other which creates problems with trying to choose just one.

I think someone said they found a Japan price which equaled out to like $45 so honestly the whole DLC thing was completely overblown imo and it's just the presentation of it that they fucked up. Plenty of games have shit like that going on, they're just WAY better with shilling it out.

Dragonball Fighterz launched with 24 characters at $60 and 8 DLC characters coming with a $35 pass.

CTB is launching with 22 characters for $40 and a (rumored) $40 pass for another 18 characters.

Dragonball seems significantly worse to me in that regards.

I think you should consider that DBFZ is an all new game making highly detailed new assets for every character while Cross Tag is literally a sprite dump (besides UNI characters who I believe are being redrawn at least)

RWBY characters are all new at least, as this is their first appearance.

Also the game's development means nothing to me as a consumer. All that matter is the bottom line dollar value. Not like I'm gonna give Andromeda a pass for being shit because development sucked.

Considering Disney owns ESPN and EVO is basically the only time it makes sense showing a fighting game on TV I seriously doubt that they went out of their way to make sure Marvel wasn't there.

I could see them definitely saying no to having UMVC3 one of the main games because it's older but the rest of the logic doesn't make much sense.

Is it that hard to believe that Infinite just didn't make the cuts based on its own merits? Outside of Tag Battle, every other game deserved to be there more. Infinite shouldn't get in just because of a pedigree.

Well that's exactly what the podcast I was talking about earlier was discussing. Like yea, initial reaction is "WHOA THAT'S CRAZY" but take it outside of "Well it's MAHVEL so of course it should be there" and it just doesn't seem to have the numbers to substantiate taking a spot. I think argument might still be made for putting it in place of Tag Battle but apparently BlazBlue is still massive so that kind of makes up a BlazBlue spot.

If there are any testers out there playing Tag Battle right now then the userbase might be larger than Marvel.

Marvel's nail in the coffin was Dragonball. That was nearly a 1 to 1 draining of Marvel's base and as a result it's been at 0 active players on Steam on several occasions. It's a case of one game eating another.

Its definitely the case that DBFZ took a lot of Marvels playerbase, but if you look at the tournament scene (and given were talking about Evo, a physical tournament, this is the best number to gauge participation) Marvel has either the second or third highest prereg number for most upcoming events. I definitely think that ultimately a lot will jump ship from Marvel to DBFZ, but I also think it will still have a larger presence in the scene than, say, Injustice 2 will this year.

Evo has a history of making deals with publishers behind the scenes for unreleased games, and Im guessing that ultimately Marvel wasnt willIng to make a deal with them but ASW convinced them to put BBTAG in. That year when they had the charity drive to determine the final game because there was only enough room for one, they added Injustice to the lineup a month after the fact despite it only raising like 200 dollars compared to Melee and Skullgirls 100K each. We got Tekken 7 twice when there was literally no way to play it anywhere outside of Japan and Korea. There is no logical way to justify those outside of money.

and in the past every time they pointed to any argument regarding player base, it had to do with tournament numbers because a large portion of casuals will not go to tournaments and have no bearing on the competitive scene so understandably some people have raised eyebrows when they hear that "nobody's playing it' and point out that Marvel Infinite had relatively solid tournament numbers.

but they don't really play like each other. other than the obvious 2v2/3v3 comparison, Marvel has much more emphasis on team synergy and characters as a unit whereas DB is more 1v1 based with a sprinkle of assists. and it's not like there's a "Tag game" community. even with Marvel 3, Marvel players were more likely to play SF4 if anything else because they were both "Capcom games" instead of Arcsys "anime" ones.

i think Marvel Infinite was in an unfortunate situation that got a lot of bad publicity since its development stage and people (including those who had no plans of ever playing it) proclaiming it as a dead game from the start scared off a bunch of people who were on the fence. the whole "Marvel is dead" meme got started later in UMvC3's scene when the playerbase became smaller but more dedicated (like almost every other game years after release) but still had consistently solid numbers at tournaments. and with people so readily claiming 2017 as the "final" year of Marvel 3 after Infinite's announcement the stage was set for disaster. i don't think Dragon Ball can claim a majority of the credit for Marvel's failure despite that being the prevailing narrative out there.
