The short answer is yes as Educational purposes have special exemptions regarding fair use. Legally speaking anyway.

Morally that is a different story as academia, journals, and textbooks are mired in controversy, shoddy ethics, and elitism. Nintendo isn't really the same thing as academic journals. They don't make their publications exclusive. Their games are available for anyone to purchase. Their products are all luxury items. There is no shortage of competition.

I mean if you're going to use the "I'm not harming Nintendo because it's just $20" then the reverse, taking $20 from Cliffy B. as his company was tanking hardcore after the Lawbreakers flop follows is significant harm. In that sense, taking $20 from people who are already unethically inflating prices and blocking otherwise unlimited information behind a veil of academic elitism is also not comparable.

Likewise, pirating Seiken Densetsu 3 has a different connotation from pirating "Picle Ricc" the latter of which is a shoddy asset flip that barely works as a game and is primarily designed to fuck with some Steam algorithms to generate market items and scam the market out of some money and was banned from Steam shortly after its release.

if you die you respawn with just one energy tank filled and have to grind energy pellets to fill back up.

This is functionally like, if in Dark Souls, if you died, you respawn at the campfire with 1hp, no charges in your flask until you kill the next boss.

sure, after their life has been ruined, after they won't be able to get a legitimate job or support themselves because they still have the stigma of having been a felon and because they have become institutionalized, and will probably end up hanging themselves from the rafters of a halfway house.

the damage is already done in a lot of cases. no part of the prison system is perfect, nor will it ever be. but again, that doesn't mean that any part of it should just be abolished. we should work to improve them instead.

That seems like a problem with how we treat prisoners and not the justice system.

It was originally something like 20-30 years. After Disney totally bankrolled congress it became 70 years after the death of the creator and now since corporations are people and copyright ownership can be traded like a commodity it's effectively forever.

I think going back to the 30 year maximum time limit is good enough. Being able to profit off of shit you did for 30 years is already extremely generous.

Just because the english localization team doesn't get any money for the sale doesn't mean nobody gets any money. The original developers of the Japanese version are still awarded portion of the sale, but even if they weren't (aka it's a second hand used sale) you're still acting within the boundaries of the law and properly using your contributions to society to earn and purchase what you want.

What about for disc-based systems with a game we didn't get localized and isn't particularly well known? They don't like us to modify our systems to play burned discs and you probably don't either so there goes ripping the import, applying a patch and burning it to a CD-R or DVD-R.

They can not like that all they want it's still legal to install mod chips into your system or use hotswap tricks for systems that they work on. As a matter of fact, that's basically what you had to do if you played Ar Tonelico 2 because on the 3rd turn of combat the final boss used an attack that crashes the game but fans released a patch fix for it.

Expecting them to localize EVERYTHING is unrealistic and this isn't current stuff anyway, so someone out there taking their own time to translate it seems ideal.

If you have a flash cart it takes like 5 minutes to rip an official cart, apply a translation patch, and flash the flash cart and play it legally. Games like Mother 3 can be played on an official GameBoy Advance in English with no problems.

Yes. Secret of Mana is actually Secret of Mana 2. Seiken Densetsu 3 is Secret of Mana 3. Final Fantasy Adventure / Sword of Mana is Secret of Mana 1, and Legend of Mana is Secret of Mana 4 if you want to look at it like that.
