You can find this out for yourself by playing the first few screens and realizing your fire only goes in 4 directions. This makes it almost unplayable and definitely unfun.

Add to this to the fact that you're in a giant world that looks the same, but with no map.

Metroid Zero Mission has to be one of the biggest improvements ever in a remake.

I had fun playing it at first, but eventually it was held back by so many bad decisions. Starting off with 30 energy after dying being one of them. Eventually, since it was on my Wii U, I used a printed out map and had a save state after one of the times I refilled my energy all the way because I was sick of 30 energy grinding.

Zero Mission might be one of the most enjoyable gaming experiences I had in a long time when I played it a couple of years ago.

Oh yeah, I forgot about the 30 energy after you die.

That's not so bad at first, but when you face the bosses you need full energy + extra several energy tanks AND a lot of rockets. This can get really bad especially with Mother Brain.

Yeah, wtf? Almost every action/platformer game on the NES had attacks limited to 2 or 4 directions. Zelda 2, Mario games, and Mega Man for example. Contra was one of the few exceptions to that.

Mega Man is the only good example because you mainly use projectile attacks. And while those games are difficult, they are divided into quick levels while Metroid is one giant world.

Also the Metalman attack from Mega Man 2 goes in 8 directions.

The grinding for health aspect was one of the ways they made games last longer back in the 8-bit era. We didn't have better at the time, so we didn't know better. So we still enjoyed them.

Metroid really doesnt require grinding for health, just dont die before getting your first energy tank. Every additional tank gives you full health. There are more energy tanks in the game than you can actually hold, so you have 2 to use as refills after you die, or get your password. 6 energy tanks is more than enough to do anything in this game. If you are still dying, than you just need to get better at the game.

The no map thing isnt a big deal either. The game is very small, just look at the map compare map to later games. The areas are intentionally similar, and some misleading, to make you have to explore a bit.

You dont need to crouch or shoot down, you can use bombs to kill enemies in the ground, or use wave beam. You are supposed make a choice between the more powerful wave beam, or utility of the ice beam. But really screw attack makes them both feel underpowered. This game is the reason it has the reputation it does, because the later games diminish its usefulness.

You don't have to defend such a dumb, terrible decision.

Most people aren't going to know where many of those tanks are, and dying is pretty easy, and annoying to deal with.

Metroid II is a lot better but still pretty weak compared to some of its peers. The series didn't really get good until Super Metroid.

nah it's pure crap.

if you die you respawn with just one energy tank filled and have to grind energy pellets to fill back up.

This is functionally like, if in Dark Souls, if you died, you respawn at the campfire with 1hp, no charges in your flask until you kill the next boss.

Except Metroid doesn't even have iframes.

Somehow I beat Metroid 2 which has an even more confusing layout (I used a map of course). Never beat 1. Never will because fuck:

- Starting with 30 energy every time you die regardless of how many Energy Tanks youve picked up
- Only having 3 directions to shoot
- Not being able to shoot downwards in midair
- Not being able to crouch (a common NES problem, these two mean that killing enemies low to the ground is impossible)
- Fuck the labyrinthine design
- Fuck the lack of map
- Fuck the brutal difficulty (exaggerated by E Tank problem)

I am a huge Metroid fan. I will never beat this game though.

I was trying to draw the closest comparison I could. There aren't any because it's just that crap.

But you do start with just one energy tank filled up, aka "99 energy" after a death.

No. There are so many harder games. TaleSpin is harder. Zelda 2 is harder. Dragon Warrior was confusing to play one NES so I'd consider it harder. Marble Madness, Fester's Quest, Home Alone, Mario the lost levels, Guardian legend, any Megaman, I have a ton of NES games I never managed to get close to beat.
