The Blackcoat's Daughter - 2017 (Netflix)
Cool Hand Luke - 1967 (Netflix)
Ma Rainey's Black Bottom - 2020 (Netflix)
Nomadland - 2020 (Hulu)
One Night in Miami - 2020 (Amazon Prime)

Plan on catching up with some of the movies I've missed over the last few weeks. Been busy binging The Wire + various recently released films, which is why most of this list is from the last year.

Perfect Blue

Hoo boy, this is definitely one of the creepier movies I've watched lately. All the elements flowed together well (even when it seemed like a jumbled up pile of nonsense). Movies rarely make me feel uneasy or deeply uncomfortable, but this one did it for me - combining the slow loss of sanity with two of the most horrifying looking animated characters (Rumi and Me-Mania) I've ever seen made me a babble-y mess (John is incredibly patient, I give him personally a 10/10). I don't have anything to add that would make my interpretation seem profound or anything, i just really dig movies that give me an emotional response like that.

also i s2g independently of you all rating it a 9/10, i was going to rate it a 9/10. But not on the upper end of 9, like John. Just a solid 9.

so yeah, 9/10

Perfect Blue

It's been years since the last time I watched Perfect Blue, but this was as creepy as I remembered. The increasing inability to tell what exactly is "real" as the film goes on really gets to me. Good critique of celebrity culture too. (And surprisingly more relevant today thanks to the rise of the Internet. It's funny how the web is actually a plot point.).

9/10

Vote for any and all movies you would be interested in seeing for the next week (~April 2nd, NA). The movie with the most overall votes wins. You may rank your votes from most preferred to least (do not rank movies you would not vote for) so I don't have to @ you back in case of a tie. If you do not intend to vote and are fine with whatever wins, please reply with "No Vote" so there is as little of a waiting period as possible. If you list multiple movies in your vote but you are not ranking them, please include "Not Ranked" along with your vote (I will assume they are ranked otherwise). Please vote by Friday, April 2nd, 8:00 PM EST/5:00 PM PST

Hunt for the Wilderpeople - 7/10 I don't remember an iota of this movie (saw 3 years ago), but gave it this score on my Letterboxd. I have great hatred for my poor movie retention.

Perfect Blue

8/10 I'll be the one asshole who doesn't give it a 9.

Movie was incredibly successful at making me feel unsettled beginning from the acted rape scene through to the ending. Especially got into it when they started using those hard-cuts back to Mima in her bedroom; I love when a film is good at putting you in the shoes of a character losing their mind.

Felt bad for Mima from the get-go because she lacked any real support structure. I was frustrated with Rumi the entire time for almost seemingly giving a fuck, but not being successful at it. Definitely makes sense in hindsight - shoutouts to the script.

I prefer putting ratings out of spoilers.

Also IIRC we don't have to rewatch movies that we have seen and are still comfortable with rating them right?

Just as a heads up, we just had a baby not that long ago and my "sit down and seriously watch a movie" time has gone to zero. Feel free to keep tagging me as I'm still interested and I'll catch up on the movies I can when I can, but also feel free to skip me in the rotation and I probably won't be voting for a while since I cannot guarantee I can watch the movie that week anyway.

whoa congrats!

if you plan to watch the movie at any point, you're still welcome to vote if you happen to catch the topic at the usual voting time, even if it's not that week. although in your case specifically, i imagine you won't deviate much from your voting method which has been consistent since the beginning.

as far as the rotation stuff and all that, the system is in place so even if you didn't say anything, the process is already laid out. i definitely appreciate you telling me you're still interested though. makes it easier for me.

as a reminder to everyone of "the process" for recommendations:

sometime Wednesday night (Pacific Time) i will remind you if it's your turn. you have until Thursday 8 ET/5 PT to nominate. if you meet the watchrate requirement but you do not respond by then, it moves to the next person in line (who then has an hour to respond, and so on) and i'll ask you again the following week. if you do NOT meet the watchrate requirement and do not respond by then, you will be skipped. (this has all been said before and is in the spreadsheet)

it's entirely possible for someone who doesn't currently meet the 50% requirement to come in 5 minutes before their deadline with multiple ratings and thus meet the requirement and gets to recommend. that being said, i would obviously prefer you saying something than letting the time run out to the deadline if you can help it.

likewise, if you are no longer interested in the topic i would appreciate you telling me so. as long as you do not say you want to be taken off the list, i will continue to @ you every week since i won't make any assumptions. but again, i would obviously appreciate a response either way. even just saying "No Vote" if you don't care/have no preference about any of the movies that week lets me know you're still interested in the topic.

Perfect Blue (1997)

So I finally watched this last night at like 1am. Wow, what a trippy movie. Crazy Mima or Rumi effortlessly hop skipping around like a murderous Mary Poppins on steroids was terrifying! This gave me some Fight Club vibes with all the cuts going back and forth from her real life and being in the studio performing. It was done so well. I vaguely remember Black Swan but of the little things that I do remember it reminded me of some things in that. But I still dont know whats really going on. Its played out soooo well.

Mima and Rumi.
Mimas Room.
Mima is Rumi?

Did she really get hit by that truck early on and is this deformed former pop star/actress with a broken psyche? I also thought that creepy Me-Mania dude and Rumi were related from their facial features. But yeah, what a trippy ass movie. I loved it!

Cool Hand Luke (for real)

honestly i wasn't expecting much because it didn't really look like my type of thing based on what i had seen (which was the image and half of the first sentence on letterboxd). it was entertaining for the most part but i started getting bored once the 'escape arc' started. not sure how much of it was my short attention span but i started feeling the length there. but the ending brought it home well enough.

my favorite parts were the early scenes that established the culture of the prison like when the other prisoners come in and see the new guys for the first time and there's the air of overall indifference because they're just more cogs. there's no crowding/fuss over them but also there's small acknowledgments like mention of a bet about how many newbies there would be or that one guy asking about Connecticut and just moving on after like a second. some cool details. and the 'in the box' laying down the rules was a great scene as well.

the egg eating was good too in a gross kind of way. but there's also that small part inside me like 'oh gosh what a waste of food whyyyyyy'

seeing the dogs making those awful noises while chasing him and then seeing one dead later was really not cool though. does it really affect my rating? no. but can i be absolutely certain that it didn't unconsciously affect my view of the character and make me not care what happened to him from that point on? ...also no. good/powerful ending though (and not because he dies lmao). 6/10

Cool Hand Luke (1967)

What we got here is a failure to communicate.

Sometimes nothing can be a real cool hand.

I dont know if Ive ever heard these quotes, I probably have, but Ill be using them all week to see if anyone catches them. Im not a very religious person but I caught some of the subtle comparisons to Jesus in this. That egg scene, when hes laying on the table after his victory, he poses like hes been crucified. That was probably the first one that caught my eye. Also, there being 50 inmates eggs could be the sins of them all? Soundtrack was pretty good, too. Ballad of Cool Hand Luke is a phenomenal theme song. Plastic Jesus also amazing. Not sure about that ending. Fuck those prison guards for not trying to save his life.

Happy to check this off my movie bucket list, but I think Ill need to watch it again to fully appreciate it. This is one of those movies that I can see getting better with multiple viewings. For a 60s movie, Id say it holds up pretty well.

8/10
