Murder by Death

Wow this movie was painful. I wanted to shut the movie off from the very first blind joke, where the butler misses the stamps, and it only got worse from there. Terribly dated accent jokes that get repeated ad nauseam, annoying caricatures of famous fictional detectives wasting its all-star cast, and juvenile pratfalls and silly faces round out the level of humor we're dealing with here. On paper, there's some good ideas here. I think there is something to be said about the mega-genius detective who can tell where someone has been last Friday because of a misplaced arm hair. Yet, this film think it's clever to toss in a bunch of random twists at the end while completely bullshitting its way through the middle, then have the nerve to think its earned the right to point and laugh at those same twists told in much better and much more memorable stories. I always feel when a parody does not respect the original works, then it just comes off as petty and mean-spirited. To give the film some more compliments though, Peter Falk is great it in it and I do like some of the film's more macabre moments, especially that death mask.

Also my jaw completely dropped when I realized one of the worst Punisher scenes in comic history came from this film:

The Love Witch

What a simply wonderfully imaginative, gorgeous, and creative film. Outside of Bale's Patrick Bateman, Samantha Robinson gives my favorite performance in a film ever. Her brilliant mix of satirical witty chaos & desperate but heartfelt yearning for love is beyond magnetic, never before has a performance simply hypnotized me for the entire duration as this one. On the surface, Elaine appears as the true definition of a free spirit, hard-spoken and genuine, but despite this she tends to bring herself down to others' levels in order to feel affection. Among its many hats, I see The Love Witch mainly as a tragedy: both the character of Elaine and the film itself tackle years of gender roles in film, and through Elaine's search for love she ironically self-objectifies, and becomes exactly what she thinks men want her to be instead of living life on her own merits. It's this strange dichotomy where you have Elaine, the driven witch relentlessly pursuing her goals to the point of murder, and then Elaine, the lost soul and the by-product of the very masculine and misogynistic society she attempts to defy.

On a technical level; The Love Witch capitalizes on its 60s & 70s psychedelic influences with its authentic 35mm film use, allowing the viewer to take in gorgeous images of what I think are the film's best sequences: "the rainbow", the tea room, the mock wedding. These dream-like trips, in addition to being insanely fun sequences showcasing the pure talent of set design, wardrobe, and performances here, are also where a lot of the horror comes from. Yes, this film is also technically a horror movie, sure, not what you would expect from a traditional one, but more so along the lines of intellectual dramas of the Technicolor era: The Birds, Suspiria, Peeping Tom. The mysterious natures of the film's proceedings and Elaine's increasing body count scare in a way that makes the viewer more uncomfortable and bewildered than anything.

This film, with all of its influences and genre spins and detail-heavy filmmaking can admittedly be hard to approach, and yes some parts do come off as simply campy or even overly slow-paced. Still, how this film approaches feminism and over 50 years of male-oriented filmmaking has placed it close to my heart and I now count it as one of my favorite films of all time. The insanely well-realized character of Elaine help climb this film to heights unseen, a compelling study of character and sexuality while having more than its fair share of hilarious indulgences too.

Stalker
Already seen it before this topic and love it to bits! Just that concept of "The Zone" is one of the best thematic locations ever put to film. is so incredible to me, an industrial rustic hellscape twisted and torn to ruin as a result of pure human hubris, with once beautiful visions of nature now depreciated and rotted away, a reflection of the hopelessness now oppressively dominating the world. It's such a prescient film, as a self-proclaimed Chernobyl buff myself, it is absolutely frightening to witness just how accurate this film was, and how it's paranoiac tension and surrealistic notes of fear encapsulate just how right people were to be scared of a nuclear apocalypse, and perhaps, weren't scared enough. Yet, the Zone can still be a place of wonder, where tragedy has wrought a sense of beauty which do not conform to our typical constraints of the word, much like we may be attracted to a once bustling household now overtaken by rotted floorboards and thick foliage. It's a location where good & evil don't really apply, but instead take on the traits of what you yourself bring into it. That's why, beyond the physical, Stalker is also one of the best examples of psychological horror I can think of; it's a film where the horror is always in plain view, yet it's the fractured minds of the human subjects it stars that inflict the most pain on to themselves, exemplified by the most simple but effective scenes of hearing noises throughout the Zone, or coming so far onto the journey only to return empty-handed, afraid to take that last step into the unknown. Stalker is a truly a film that's malleable and perfect for bringing your own life journey in to. You could watch it a million separate times and feel something unique to you every viewing, as the film's constantly gorgeous shots take on new meaning each time.

10/10

This film's themes and concepts are highly influential, including being adapted into one of my favorite series, the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games, the Metro series, and more recently Annihilation. Check them out if Stalker didn't quite capture your attention so well because they're amazing re-toolings of pretty much the same ideas.

No arguments there, Overwatch is definitely one of the most spectacular MP experiences I've had too. Reaper & Mercy still rank as some of my favorite VG characters. I get a lot of pushback for this opinion but what really killed the game for me was the startling lack of new events every year. One year of recycled events seemed okay at the first since there was an attempt to shake them up then year after year after that it was really just the same thing every time and it got so tedious with nothing to look forward to besides new skins. Eventually even Archives succumbed to this which was the most disappointing of all as I loved learning new bits of lore every year, it was pretty much the last straw that made me stop playing all together, until recently actually. CTF Blitz is hella fun. Still I am looking forward to OW 2 as well especially for the campaign.

I think Keaton puts in the better performance, but they do way more with Mysterio as a character. You could switch Vulture out with any other villain and still get the same movie.

I disagree with this, like in the car scene for example, I couldn't really imagine like Sandman or Doctor Octopus there, I feel like the tone would take on a whole different meaning.

Willy's Wonderland

Great pick this we... damn it. Well I was always gonna watch this anyway so I might as well talk about it here. This is a GREAT film, with one of my favorite Nic Cage performances since Mandy. He doesn't even speak besides a few grunts here and there, and it is an inspired choice, like a silent video game protagonist going through each level dutifully, stoically and with purpose. On that note, it will be hard to escape accusations of FNaF plagiarism here, but let's not act like moving animatronics were started by that series anyway. Intensely popularized maybe, but it's all really just an extension of a long lineage of killer inanimate objects dating back to the 1920s with Waxworks. Like many of those movies, Willy's Wonderland mainly embodies the slasher genre, with some of the most disposable teen characters I've seen in awhile, and it doesn't reject what it is, instead choosing to bathe in its neon colors and blood-soaked ultra-violence as intense synthwave blares throughout its soundtrack (I want this film's soundtrack BTW). It's a film that knows what it wants to be front and back and is made all the better for it, what's old is new again, the slasher cliches seemingly dead and buried with 2010s' cynicism brought back to consciousness in a film that's simply interested in supplying the gleeful carnage we've all been craving for again. It's that primal relief the classic slashers were built on, but instead of focusing on its killers, Nic Cage's zen-like charming toughness is the death dealer fighting against representations of chaos, depravity and hopelessness. For a horror fanatic like me, it's just what the doctor ordered.

8/10

Has there ever been a TV adaptation of a movie that's nearly as good as Fargo?

Ash vs. Evil Dead and maybe Hannibal come extremely close, but Fargo is still king.
