Cool Hand Luke (actually serious write-up)

Good movie. The prison atmosphere is really well done. The Jesus parallels with Luke are interesting, but I'm not entirely sure what the story supposed to mean in the end. Obviously Luke is a kind of martyr, and I think the police represent "normal society" in general? That makes sense to me, but there are probably some other good interpretations.

Also, the egg eating scene was really gross and hard for me to watch.

8/10

Cool Hand Luke

8/10 eggs

Really enjoyed this one. A whole lot of good dialogue and a cool guy with a handful of nothin'.

Thought this was a very successful character study into Luke: What happens when you put an anti-establishment man into an environment with some of the strictest bosses and rules? The entire movie was resting on Newman's shoulders and I think he nailed it.

Was SO bummed out when they caught him after his second escape attempt.

i just took it as a good-old general anti-authority fuck you i won't do what you tell me feel for now but on the 'normal society' part, in the scene where Luke is talking to his mother, doesn't she say something like "why couldn't you be normal/have a normal life?" or something along those lines?

I mean, he actually gets along fairly well in prison up until the guards throw him in The Box just because his mom died. If "the establishment" is that mindlessly cruel, it's no wonder he's suddenly going to rebel and not care about playing by their rules anymore.

it was a "oh yeah eggs are a thing, i want them now" moment for me

Hard boiled eggs might be my least favorite way to eat an egg, but aside from that the scene didn't really affect me one way or the other.

On the other hand, the latter scene did kind of make me want to have a big plate of rice.

you know i actually forgot about this.

i don't remember if they had any justification for that shit other than "when your mom dies, you turn into a rabbit and want to run" or something like that. but if that was the case where they put him in the Box because they THINK he can run/based on potential, that's the same mindset that creates all those self-fulfilling prophecies and problems in the first place. and then later they point to those cases as "examples" that they're right

The Love Witch
4/10

I feel like it's a loving tribute to 1970's-1980's schlocky horror movies, but it just doesn't subvert things enough to make it interesting. Its biggest problem, for me, is that it just doesn't have a hook. I don't really care about what Elaine or the cop guy are doing, since...well. I couldn't find a reason to root for her. And everything goes swimmingly for her anyway so there's barely any tension.
Maybe it's making some points about female sexuality and relationships but it's all very blunt that it kinda hurts the cause...

Fargo
8/10

Fargo was one of the first movies I watched due to its reputation (instead of personal appeal) and I wasn't disappointed. Though crime/drama isn't really my favorite, but it's still very interesting to watch due to the way its plot is set up and especially thanks to Frances McDormand. I LOVE Marge Gunderson. She's just so charming with her accent and little furry cap. And she's PREGNANT?! Wow. Iconic.
Though some of the slower, more drama-heavy scenes kindaaa lost my interest at moments so that's why I gave it 8 out of 10.

Perfect Blue
8/10
It's still a tragedy we lost Kon too early. His works are unlike anything else. Though Perfect Blue is not my favorite but it's still very engaging and scary at times. I do like the scenes where we're made to wonder if it takes in reality or imagination, but I especially appreciate when the movie shows the 'real' explanation - like Rumi running along, demented, instead of idol!Mima jumping effortlessly, or how there were 'two' Mima rooms. Brilliant.

If it were more self-aware and egregious, I can see it though. Currently it's played very straight and not very interesting to me. Needs to be more Black Mirror-y but with witchcraft.

Perfect Blue

Anime films are a blind spot for me so this was a great pick, maybe the best one I've seen (Akira is the other big one I know). The weirdness factor is right in the sweet spot, the twists and reveals are cleverly played, and I loved the meta story-blurring with the TV production. I kept thinking 'Inland Empire meets Selena'. There are so many mirrored themes bouncing off each other in a swift 80 minutes - stolen identity/impostor syndrome, dissociative identity/acting, manufactured persona/manufactured celebrity. Doppelgangers and dream sequences are practically required for this kind of psychodrama.

The Rumi reveal really got me, I feel like I should have seen it coming since one of the things Mima reads on the website is how she was impressed by the other woman's acting, which she specifically said to Rumi earlier. It was right there! It also makes me question how many of the scenes are actually the real Mima and how many were Rumi's delusion. The rape scene, for instance - is that just Rumi acting out in her head what she believes Mima's career move is metaphorically doing to her image or was that actually a scene in Double Bind?

It seems like the movie is ambiguous enough at points to leave some room for interpretation as to what's real. Is the truck death a dream? How much of Double Bind is a dream? Johnbobb pointed out that the scenes where Idol-Mima is floating along in a chase sequence would be pretty tough for Rumi, so it seems like there has to be some element of her that's purely Mima's illusion. I will point out there's also a brief moment where Idol-Mima appears in the train window's reflection, and it's pretty funny to picture it as Rumi busting her ass running alongside the train.

Favorite moments - Idol-Mima's face turning to Rumi's as she's being choked was really effective. The scene where Mima sees the security guy in the hallway, turns back to call for the other actor and then it cuts back to the guy being impossibly close. Just a well-paced jump scare. The doppelroom reveal, it would be so unnerving to wake up and look out the window and realize you are in a duplicate of your home. And the photographer's murder, the way the music slowly took over as the visions kept flashing during the kill was really operatic. Of course the Power Rangers opening scene was great too.

I can't believe I didn't notice the 'handheld' camera shake until y'all pointed it out, nice meta touch 9/10

i think this is another great scene that showcases utilizing the medium of animation. if this was live-action, i'm sure there would have been a cut and then when we go back to that shot, the face would have changed or i'm sure the visual effects would have aged terribly. and it's those kinds of scenes that i really look for in animated films.

I've seen Kill Bill, Mad Max and Ex Machina, so I'll go ahead and just put the other two on there. Hoping for The Lobster as it was actually on my list of movies to possible nominate next time around.
